CBS to investigate producer Mapes

The fallout from CBS's doomed story about President Bush's National Guard service most endangers a woman few viewers know but who played a key role in two of the biggest television stories of the year.

Mary Mapes, a veteran producer at CBS News, reported most of the National Guard story, including obtaining the documents CBS now says it can't authenticate. She also passed on the phone number of her source, former Texas National Guard officer Bill Burkett, to the Kerry campaign.

CBS acknowledged Mapes passed on Burkett's number to Kerry adviser Joe Lockhart, and Lockhart called him. Spokeswoman Kelli Edwards said CBS wasn't aware that this was part of any deal, but it's one of the things that will be examined by an independent commission...

Mapes "broke" the story. She finally got more of the docs from Burkett and Dan flew from Florida to Texas to talk to her and Burkett.

Now, if she was working with Democratic operatives who set up the source and needed someone on the "inside" to get the forged docs through CBS scrutiny, that would be a bigger story.

I've always been a fan of the 375H&H as a one caliber do it all GP rifle. I have load data that lets me use it on every thing from Mulies to big coastal brown. I've been reading up on the recent introduction of the 8MM Rem mag . Thus I was asking to see if you'd tried it yet. I haven't . Just what I hear and read thus far.......:o)

Remember to write and mail a letter to your local CBS station. Let them know that if Rather and Mapes are not gone in three weeks, you will never again watch CBS National or LOCAL news. And you won't be looking at their new shows either. They tried to criminally steal the election and no way should Rather be allowed to slide by while the investigation team is looking. At a minimum he must be suspended - as in off the air.

But I don't believe Burkett forged the docs. First, because he kept them too long, since March reportedly. Also, CBS called him (repeatedly I might add), he didn't initially contact them. And in his last interview on CBS, Rather acknowledged that Burkett had asked CBS to authenticate the memos. I can't believe a forger would do that.

But about possible Democratic collusion, heres something from FOX:

Democratic insiders are fearful of what the scandal could do to their party.

"You start tying these connections together … I said I'm so scared because I know what's going on with my party," Democratic strategist Pat Caddell told FOX News. "The fact is, [Burkett] did not approach CBS, CBS approached him looking for the documents, which means someone tipped CBS off … which could be a violation of the law."

There's the mythic journalistic code that sources will not be paid for their stories. Yet, here's Mapes putting Lockhart in touch with Burkett (allegedly) in order to obtain the forgeries. Payment in any language. Then, Mr Rather in his "sorry" announcement pointedly and oddly said that CBS had approached Burkett, not the other way around. Another quid-pro-quo in order to get Burkett to appear on camera? Another payment. I haven't seen this payment angle cited in any MSM reporting, not that one should expect it.

Burkett posted on a liberal website that he was "reassembling" Bush records that along with the Army terms makes me think he created the memos.
