Rush Limbaugh: President Makes Us Proud at U.N.
RushLimbaugh.com ^ | 9/21/04 | Rush Limbaugh

RUSH: Boy, oh, boy, oh, boy! I hope you heard the president's speech at the United Nations, and I really hope you heard Kofi Annan's speech before the president's speech so you could contrast the two. I'm going to tell you something, folks. This Bush speech was a terrific speech. If his name was George W. Clinton, this speech would be hailed as one of the best speeches of all time. The only problem with the speech was Bush was talking about freedom and democracy to a room full of thugs and dictators, but it didn't hold him back. It's interesting to note here, some in "the media" following this speech expressed utter dismay that the president didn't back down, didn't back down from his policies in Iraq, didn't back down from his expressions of the hoped for democracy and freedom for the people of the world, didn't back down from his policy of defeating terrorists.

What was he supposed to do, back down because John Kerry made some lame speech yesterday? They expressed shock that he didn't back down. Who do they think he is, John Kerry? I mean, this guy has one policy and he has one intention, and he's stated it, and he's said we need to be consistent. You know, if you look at Kofi Annan's speech -- and we don't have any sound bites of it yet and I don't know that we will; I don't know that we want to waste time with it, but he kept talking about the "rule of law." The rule of law? Well, whoopee! How about your own continent, Kofi? How about the rule of law in Sudan? How about the rule of law in Mozambique? How about the rule of law in Rwanda? What did you do to enforce the rule of law?

Not once did Kofi Annan use the word "democracy" in his speech. Not once. Yeah, how about the rule of law in the oil-for-food program run by the UN, Kofi? What a joke. The press is full of glowing, pre-publicity stories about Kofi and his legacy. His term thankfully expires sometime in the year 2006 -- and guess what nation he mentioned? He mentioned one nation when he talked about excessive violence in the world. Israel, absolutely right! The anti-Semitic, bigoted United Nations was in full form and flower today. He mentions Israel, of all places. There was not one condemnation of terrorism from Kofi Annan in his speech. He made a reference to it, but there wasn't a condemnation of it. I saw Joe Biden on TV after Bush's speech, and I don't know what Biden was doing but he sounded more hawkish than Bush. He said (paraphrasing), "Bush, it's time to stop being polite with the UN. We need to fund all these programs over there, need to go kick butt. Need to go do what we need to do and so forth." It was stark contrast to what John Kerry said yesterday. Anyway, it was, folks. You would have been proud if it if you had seen it.

You would have been proud of your country, and you would have been proud of your president. Well, there was an icy silence. What do you expect? It's a room full of thugs and dictators. Here's a guy that they hate who is trying to get them essentially out of power. These are thugs and dictators and here's a man talking about freedom and democracy. You think they're going to applaud him? I'm getting all kinds of e-mails from people, "I can't believe how disrespectful the audience was at the UN! Why, there was no applause."

I don't know that there's applause anyway. I don't know if there's a protocol. I don't know if they applaud during these speeches or not. I didn't hear any applause during Kofi's speech and he was clearly right up the alley of the thugs and dictators. So I don't think there is any applause. If there were provisions for the General Assembly, I still say that this is nothing more than a gathering of the bar scene in Star Wars. These are just fallible human beings. There's nothing super-duper special about these clowns at the UN. They're actually a bunch of sponges. They fly into New York, they live and breathe off the American taxpayers; they get diplomatic immunity for whatever crime they want to commit, and they don't get pursued for the crimes they commit at home.

Why would you want to be challenged with freedom and democracy anywhere when, you know, some little thug dictator from some outer far reach country that nobody will ever find unless a plane crashes there and rescue teams have to go in. I mean, I just can't take the UN seriously, and I don't know how many people do. John Kerry does. That's really all we need to know. But it was just a terrific speech. We will have some sound bites of the president. You would have been proud. He stood firm, didn't back down, talked about the only way to go is to proceed with our policy all based on the notion that every human being is entitled to freedom and democracy. It's the natural yearning of the human spirit. Those are my words. He didn't use those words, and he really was heart-rending when he talked about what happened to the children in Beslan. He said, "What are these little creatures? What have they done to deserve this? What have the innocent people of Iraqi done to deserve this?" So it was extremely uplifting.

Let's go to the audio sound bites. President Bush today at the United Nations. We have four sound bites. Here he is talking about recent terrorist attacks and tries to tell these thugs and dictators at the UN that nobody is safe.

PRESIDENT BUSH: This month in Beslan, we saw once again how the terrorists measure their success in the death of the innocent and in the pain of grieving families. Svetlana Dzebisov was held hostage along with her son and her nephew. Her nephew did not survive. She recently visited the cemetery and saw what she called "the little graves." She said, "I understand that there is evil in the world..."

RUSH: Stop the tape a minute. Stop the tape. Take the cigar out of my mouth. Do you realize, folks, the president just used a buzzword, a code word that internally all those delegates seethe at hearing, and that is the word "evil." I am not making this up, and I am not trying to be funny. It is Bush's black-and-white knowledge and expression of the differences between good and evil that just send these people to the roof. They can't handle it. There's no such thing as evil. There are only good people gone bad and we must find out why they've gone bad, and in more cases than not around the world it's because of the U.S. in the minds of many of these delegates at the UN General Assembly -- and he knows it, Bush knows it, and he used that word on purpose.

PRESIDENT BUSH: "...but what have these little creatures done?" Members of the United Nations, the Russian children did nothing to deserve such awful suffering and fright and death. The people of Madrid and Jerusalem and Istanbul and Baghdad have done nothing to deserve sudden and random murder. These acts violate the standards of justice in all cultures and the principles of all religions. All civilized nations are in this struggle together, and all must fight the murderers. We're determined to destroy terror networks wherever they operate, and the United States is grateful to every nation that is helping to seize terrorist assets, track down their operatives, and disrupt their plans.

RUSH: That's the real question. The real question, ladies and gentlemen, that needs to be asked here: Terrorism strikes at everyone around this world, where are these member nations of the United Nations in joining forces to stop it? You don't even hear John Kerry talk about this in that vaunted speech that he gave yesterday. You have terrorism in Russia now. It's all over the place. You don't hear anybody but Bush talking about facing it head-on and stopping it, and it's not the kind of thing you can say, "Well, if the rest of the world is not going to join us we'll just punt." We can't afford to do that, for ourselves and for the other free peoples of the world. That's part and parcel of what comes with the leadership and responsibility of being the lone superpower of the world, a force for good in the world.

The real question is: Where are all these other nations? Where is all the human outrage at the act, the very act of terrorism each and every time it occurs? Where's the outrage, the real outrage, at what's going on in Sudan and what happened in Rwanda? Where's the real outrage at what's going on in Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe? Where is all the outrage of all the suicide bombings mounted in the Middle East? Where is the outrage? We get stories yesterday: Saddam is depressed. Who gives a flying rear end? He ought to be more than depressed if you ask me. If all he is is depressed, then somebody is not doing something right. For crying out loud, where is the world's sense of proportion? Sadly, I think we know where it is.

Much of the leadership of the world doesn't consider terrorism as other than a means to an end. They don't condemn it because they wish to reserve it as an option should they need it. Remember who the audience at the United Nations General Assembly is. Within the simple, simple, simple context of human rights, if you take a look at every act of terrorism, there ought to be worldwide condemnation of it, and there ought to be a worldwide unified force to root it out and stop it. Instead, the one nation that seeks to take the lead is hammered, ridiculed and criticized as somehow being in the wrong -- and a major political party in that country, the Democratic Party, sides with that view that somehow we are in the wrong, that their own country is in the wrong.

It boggles the mind and it doesn't make sense, unless you understand that those who hold this view are obsessed with something that distorts their perception, which they are. They're possessed with a seething rage and hatred which has clouded all rationality. They have none. This speech today was just tremendous. This is one of the greatest human rights speeches ever delivered before a body that claims to exist for the express purpose of protecting human rights. In fact, this organization can't do diddly-squat to protect human rights, hasn't been able to do diddly-squat for decades, and the truth of the matter is, if there is ever a useless bureaucracy that the world has had, it is this.

It is the United Nations which has become an impediment to the protection and the guarantee of human rights around the world, because the UN takes every opportunity it can to stop the efforts of those who would protect human rights and sides with those who deny them, either via genocide, starvation, or civil war. Don't believe me; check recent history. Find out where the UN has been. Find out what's happened where they've been. Find out what they've been unable to stop. Find out what they haven't even tried to stop, and then call and tell me I'm wrong. And then after you do that, you call and tell me why it makes any sense whatsoever to elect someone running for president who wants to invest even more power in this absolutely worthless, useless chunk of bureaucracy.

More Bush audio from his UN speech today. This bite features the line of the speech. See if you agree.

PRESIDENT BUSH: The work ahead is demanding, but these difficulties will not shake our conviction that the future of Afghanistan and Iraq is a future of liberty. The proper response to difficulty is not to retreat, it is to prevail. The advance of freedom always carries a cost paid by the bravest among us. America mourns the losses to our nation and to many others. And today I assure every friend of Afghanistan and Iraq and every enemy of liberty: We will stand with the people of Afghanistan and Iraq until their hopes of freedom and security are fulfilled.

RUSH: Now, you tell me what in the world is provocative about that. You tell me why responsible, reasonable people would not be violating protocol, standing up and applauding that if they're decent examples of humanity. For crying out loud, I check my e-mail here and the libs who are writing me e-mail thinks this was just a horrible speech. They wanted to throw things at the television. "It was outrageous!" What in the world is outrageous? This is nothing more than what decent parents and grandparents used to teach their kids. This is nothing more than good manners. This is nothing more than principle and honor. This is nothing more than you stake out a cause, you follow it through; you see it through. You don't quit. There's nothing but life lessons in this whole paragraph:

"The work ahead is demanding. These difficulties will not shake our conviction that the future of Afghanistan and Iraq is the future of liberty. The proper response to difficulty is not to retreat, it is to prevail." This is a concept you do not hear from the Democratic Party today, certainly not from its nominee. You don't hear Kerry talking about victory. He didn't mention the word once. Kofi Annan doesn't, either. You don't hear them talking about prevailing. The whole strategy from Kerry is: "Get the hell out of there and let the rest of the world deal with this mess! What are we doing this for?" There's no admiration of the objective, no admiration of the vision. There's only fear. Nothing but fear. How any reasonable, responsible human being could be anything other than inspired by this little bite is beyond me, and I'm not exaggerating an iota here, folks.

"American mourns the losses to our nation and to many others, and today I assure every friend of Afghanistan and Iraq and every enemy of liberty, we will stand with the people of Afghanistan and Iraq until their hopes of freedom and security are fulfilled." Now, there are some perverted idiots who are going to hear this and get scared to death and think that it is the saber rattling of a warmonger. Those people are irrational and irresponsible and not capable of reasonable conversation, much less debate, because they are so obsessed with seething rage and anger and hatred, they've lost all ability to be rational, and that's how the world has come to be divided. Bush says there will be no coddling of Middle East oppression, makes it clear the Palestinians need new leadership in this bite.

PRESIDENT BUSH: These two nations will be a model for the broader Middle East, a region where millions have been denied basic human rights and simple justice. For too long, many nations, including my own, tolerated, even excused oppression in the Middle East in the name of stability. Oppression became common, but stability never arrived. We must take a different approach. We must help the reformers of the Middle East as they work for freedom and strive to build a community of peaceful democratic nations. This commitment to democratic reform is essential to resolving the Arab-Israeli conflict. Peace will not be achieved by Palestinian rulers who intimidate opposition, tolerate corruption, and maintain ties to terrorist groups.

RUSH: Well, I'll tell you, this bite right there, there's one reason why there's profound anger in that room and I know there was. They all side with the Palestinians, because the United Nations is the new home of anti-Semitism in the world today, my friends. The United Nations is where you'll find anti-Semitism and if you don't believe it, listen to Kofi Annan who spoke prior to the president.

OIL-FOR-FOOD PROFITEER KOFI ANNAN: In Israel, we see civilians, including children, deliberately targeted by Palestinian suicide bombers, and in Palestine we see homes destroyed, lands seized, and needless civilian casualties caused by Israel's excessive use of force. And all over the world we see people being prepared for further such acts through hate propaganda directed at Jews, Muslims, against anyone who can be identified as different from one's own group. Excellencies, no cause, no grievance, however legitimate in itself can begin to justify such acts.

RUSH: I tell you, it's such a joke to listen to these delegates be called "excellencies," as though they are royalty. So he has a comparison here of the atrocities occurring in the Middle East, the Israeli-Palestinian battles and obviously comes down on the side that Israelis are using excessive force. Bush talks about democracy and peace, and this body does not want to hear the word "democracy." Democracy threatens these excellencies at the UN. They are dictators. They are rulers who use an iron hand. Elections in their counties -- not all of them, the vast majority of the UN, though -- is corrupt, and there are elections in many of these countries. They are merely rubber stamps. They're not free and open. The idea that democracy exists in these UN nations is another such joke.

One more sound bite from President Bush. These are his closing remarks speaking today at the United Nations General Assembly.

PRESIDENT BUSH: History will honor the high ideals of this organization.

PRESIDENT BUSH: The charter states them with clarity: to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom.

PRESIDENT BUSH: Let history also record that our generation of leaders follow through on these ideals, even in adversity. Let history show that in a decisive decade, members of the United Nations did not grow weary in our duties or waver in meeting them. I'm confident that this young century will be liberty's century. I believe we will rise to this moment, because I know the character of so many nations and leaders represented here today. And I have faith in the transforming power of freedom. May God bless you. (Applause.)

RUSH: Then he really insulted them by saying that God blessed them. I mean, these clowns don't believe in God and they don't like God being referenced. The United Nations are bigger than God. You don't bring God into the UN. That's what I said. The president was basically challenging these people. He's telling them the exact opposite of what they are. He's praising them in ways they do not deserve. He's challenged them and in his own I think brilliant way, he's telling the world exactly what this organization is, and at the same time what he hopes it will be. So that was President Bush today at the UN. It was just a terrific speech, and as I said at the beginning of the program today if only his name were George W. Clinton this speech would be hailed as one of the greatest speeches on human rights ever delivered, but his name is George W. Bush and as such he will be smeared and ridiculed as a small thinker, a dangerous provocateur, someone who is making the world unsafe and unstable for the rest of humanity. Just absolute, absolute poppycock.

"I'm going to tell you something, folks."

Do you get the sense that Kerry is trying to imitate the down to earth touch of Rush. Kerry says "folks" so many times with so little effect. To Rush, it comes natural.

But to sKerry it just sounds like he's speaking a foreign language and has no idea what he is saying.

Thanks for posting this. It is a great analysis, not only of GWB's speech but also of Annan's. Without enforcement, there is no rule of law.

And neither does anyone who actually listens. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. Sure.

I was working and did not get the chanch to see or here the President at the UN, but from what I'm reading here, this is why Bush will win.

Imagine Kerry at the UN today.

It's a scary thought.

Yup, I noticed he is pulling a Gore too.
I'm waiting for Fox or others to ask:
Which position will Kerry take tomorrow, and who will he be tomorrow?

Oh, Does Kerry plan to break his neck to respond to everything Bush says publically like he is doing now? If so then this could get really funny FAST!!! Bush should start messing with him, and say all kinds of stuff so Kerry will show himself to be the fool he is more often.

BTW, can anyone direct me to where I can get a transcript of Kerrys response to W's speech to the U.N. today?

I was proud of My President.

Know what I notice?

Liberals have no pride without victory.

My heart swells with Pride when I watch our President. He wasn't going to come out of their hailed as the greatest man since Winston Churchill. The press core was not going to remark at his bravery for entering that environment. When they mention his message they state he is still defending his Iraq policy from critics.

That isn't what he is doing.

Bush is preaching the ultimate message of love by urging responsibility to seek freedom for the oppressed, even if the cost is great. He speaks of selflessness and peace. Of sacrifice and the value of Liberty in securing the type of society they proclaim to desire.

Win or lose, I am proud to support this man and that will not change.

The Dems cannot say the same. When they lose, depression is born and from that hatred builds. Their pride is rooted on changing variables. Ours is rooted in our constant values. I'll hold my head up high when speaking well of this man, even if his time as our president comes to an end this year. Though I pray daily God blesses us with another four years.
