Lincoln Chaffee Explains Why He Might not Vote for W (Iraqis Had Better Services under Saddam!)
CNN - Inside Politics

Posted on 09/21/2004 12:39:25 PM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

Yesterday, it was reported that Rhode Island RINO Sen. Lincoln Chaffee had announced he might not vote for Pres Bush. Unsurprisingly, there he was as Judy Woodruff's guest on Inside Politics this afternoon.

He spoke of his disagreements with W over "the environment, Iraq, and women's reproductive freedoms." Just as an aside, don't you just love the preciousness of his use of the plural form, "freedoms"?

As to Iraq, he said "we want to make decisions on good, honest information. Where are we in Iraq?" Even Judy was surprised. "Aren't you able to determine the status, frankly, by reading the news?"

Chaffee: "We got a CIA report that was very gloomy. The situation is deteriorating. Let's be honest about it."

Then he got to the highlight of his statement: "The administration says we're buidling a democracy. The big question is whether the Iraqi people turned against us. Have we moved from liberators to occupiers? The Iraqi people don't even have the services they had under Saddam Hussein."

Chaffee whimpered on: "Now that we haven't found WMDs, teh justification is that we have some kind of grand plan for the Middle East. Does that mean we have to engage in Iran, Syria?"

When Judy tried to nail Chaffee down about his voting intentions, Lincoln was as coy as a blushing 13-year old girl. "I'm a good RI Republican." He refused to flatly exclude the possibility he would vote for Kerry, but suggested he might write in someone, even mentioning Bush, Sr. by name.

"McCain needs to just get it over with already and put the D next to his name."

So does Hagel. He's supposedly on the Bush campaign team, yet he's doing all of this cross-country hand wringing about our Iraq policy, taking care never to offer any constructive solutions himself.

Hagel even said he didn't know if there would be enough votes in the Senate to renew Bush's tax cuts in the next Congressional session. He almost sounded pleased when he said it.

dont misunderestimate me :)

I like the current Iraq situation.

We are channelizing the enemy into a well-prepped killbox, and subsequently hamburgerizing them.

That's a good thing.

They have no patience, they want everything that they never had, and they want it now.

Yeah, it's a mistake to think people in other countries are just like Americans. They don't behave like Americans for any number of reasons, and we shouldn't be shocked or surprised about this.

For example, here's one dimension that usually gets very little press attention: The wealth of nations is mapped by their IQ.

My rant wasn't at you King. (Should I say "Your Royal Highness? ;-) ) I'm sorry if it sounded like I was critical of your statement.

As an aside, Inside Politics now doing a segment on Kerry's sense of humor and his various TV appearances on late night TV. They aired a brief interview with Molly Ivins, and . . . ouch! I guess some years have passed since I last saw her, but even so, she looks like she's going bald, has sprouted a mustache that Saddam would envy, and generally looks scary-bad. What has happened to her? Is she known to be seriously ill?

Further to my post on Kerry's TV appearances, CNN just aired a clip of Kerry, joking with Letterman about the negotiations over the debates, saying he's agreed that "Bush can sit in Cheney's lap."

All joking aside, is that kind of snide remark worthy of someone running for president?

I think that if we gain less than 3 or 4 more Republican seats in the Senate in November, Lincoln Chaffee will jump ship to either Independent or Democrat.

(Iraqis Had Better Services under Saddam!)

Bush PR team need to be all over the airwaves countering this. This is also Kerry's latest attack theme. Bush team need to head it off or it will blow up on them like Abu Ghraib did.

Where are their damn PR people??????

This article is from one of their own party.

Where are their damn PR people?????

You really think Chaffee would really choose to switch to a minority with no prospects of regaining the majority any time soon?

Guys like Chafee, Kennedy and (if any of you old timers remember, Rep. Fernand J. St. Germain, the noted DC swordsman) and my in-laws are the reasons I would only set foot in RI incognito.

I do love the stripers.

Further to this, I could imagine Chaffee jumping if he felt it was the only way to hold onto his own seat. Do we know if he feels vulnerable?

Perhaps I should have clarified what I meant: if we only gain one seat or so...and not the 3 to 4 we're hoping for.

Chaffee votes with the Democrats almost every time. He voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment and other Republican bills. He has now come out and declared his opposition to the President. He might as well join the Democrats. I would not put it past him.

Of course, all this is just my opinion.

Yeah, Linc, it's a real shame. I hear the people-shredders haven't been in service since Saddam was ousted.

She did have cancer a few years ago, but that's all I know.
