I know what you are thinking. I must be nuts! CBS broadcasts a fake news story, relied on forgeries to support it and then stonewalled for 12 days in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary before they "apologized", and I think they should be congratulated? What kind of a moron am I? Bear with me for a moment. I think that you will agree with my reasoning. How-ever convoluted it is.
On September 8th 2004 60 Minutes broadcast a news story claiming that President Bush was given preferential treatment in getting into the Texas Air National Guard and that he did not fulfill his obligations. The report was based on a number of documents presented as being from an "unimpeachable' source. CBS claimed to have been working on this story for 5 years. Within 4 HOURS, the reported "documents" were being shredded as fake. Inside of a day, CBS News and Dan Rather began stonewalling to try and recover. In less than 3 days, the credibility of CBS was essentially gone.
Thank you CBS and Dan Rather. You have my gratitude.
You have, in 60 minutes, (pun intended) allowed EVERY news organization in the world to suddenly aquire 10,000 new and unpaid editors and fact checkers. You no longer have, nor deserve, the trust of the public in your ability to properly and honestly verify your sources. Don't worry about that too much. We will do it for you and we will let you know where you are wrong. And each one of US will have 10,000 editors and fact checkers, so if WE are wrong, it will be known very quickly. You are to be congratulated for exposing the incompetence and bias of your news organization and by proxy all of the other news departments on this planet. ABC, NBC, FOX, MSNBC, NY Times, Washington Post, ect, ect, ect should be sending you letters of thanks for opening THEIR news departments for a scrutiny that is beyond anything they have ever experienced.
No longer will news reports be taken at face value. We, the public, have been complacent for far too long. We have falsely believed that you would be reporting the truth.
No longer. The CBS logo is now turned fully on you. And I promise you that we will never blink.
Welcome to Free Republic.
Not convoluted at all. I agree.
CBS and Blather proved to the rest of the worlds, what we've known for years. The liberal bias is alive and well in the MSM; so much so that they are trying to impact National elections. That is VERY VERY dangerous.
The rest of the MSM has now been advised; "check your facts or we will do it for you".
Great post!
Great observation! After Blather just got bitch slapped, it should make the rest of the lame-stream press take notice that they are under a microscope and thier BS will be exposed if (and when) they cross the line of honest reporting.
After President Bush is re-elected this fall I'm going to send Dan Rather and the CBS execs a thank-you note. They've done more to hurt the Kerry campaign than even Theresa.
Welcome to Free Republic... :^)
Good post, well written.
Welcome to FR!
Perhaps this was a test to determine how much the liberal media can lie in the last week of the campaign.
Bush should send Rather a "Thank You" note on White House stationery.
I can see Dan now sucking a .38 lollipop, taking early retirement.
Yes Give CBS credit for FINALLY coming clean "BUT"
Condem them for "STALLING 2 WEEKS" to get the DNC and CBS complicity stories airtite BEFORE admitting the forgery.
Good post. Welcome aboard.
Usually, they just have their reporter wave some papers in front of the camera and say "We have obtained these secret documents that prove..." - and the public never gets a chance to inspect an actual size reproduction.
I'm grateful to CBS the same way I'm grateful to Clinton for single-handedly putting his fellow DIMs out of power in DC.
Peer Review - if it's good enough for science, why would it not work well for the news?
