Musharraf: US must address root of terrorism [causes: poverty; US support of Israel]

The United States could lose its war on terrorism unless it deals with the poverty and political disputes that give rise to militant extremism, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf said in an interview on Monday.

"We are only involved at the moment in fighting terrorism frontally, the military perspective, the immediate response. But we are not addressing the root causes," Musharraf said in the interview on ABC News.

"I always say the root cause is political disputes, poverty and illiteracy," Musharraf said, adding that he does not think those issues are being addressed.

"I hope they are, otherwise we are not going to succeed. We may be winning battles, but we lose the war," he said.

Poor and illiterate people who feel aggrieved because of political disputes are easy targets for indoctrination by militant groups, said Musharraf, who has played a pivotal role in the U.S.-led war on terror after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

Musharraf named the Palestinian issue as the principal political dispute that must be addressed because he said it had "the maximum negative perspective" throughout the Muslim world.

"There is unanimous sympathy for the Palestinians against the Israelis. And the United States is seen or perceived as an Israeli supporter and totally against Muslims," Musharraf said. "So I think this is the one which needs to be resolved immediately."

On the subject of his country's role in the ongoing hunt for al Qaeda militants and remnants of Afghanistan's toppled Taliban leadership, Musharraf described the Pakistani campaign as a success.

"We have operated in south Pakistan, we have busted their sanctuaries from three valleys, so we are very successful. However, there may be more elsewhere," he said, adding that the military operation continues.

Pakistani troops are engaged in an offensive in tribal regions just across the border from the southern Afghan provinces where U.S. troops are hunting al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and his followers.

The Pakistan leader said he had no idea where bin Laden was hiding.

Musharraf spoke in New York where he will meet with U.S. President George W. Bush on the fringes of this week's U.N. General Assembly.

The bombing and bitching will NOT cease if Israel does. They'll keep on bitching and bombing, and find another scapegoat - three guesses who it'll be, and the first two don't count.

Thank you President Musharraf, I'm sure it's poverty and illiteracy, the product of your culture.

I'll change my tag line in your honor.

This is such bullcrap. If terrorism is caused by poverty, then how is it that all of the world's top terrorists were raised in the lap of luxury (with most of them attending college in the United States of America)?

Sorry...it's greed, not need, that fuels evil.

..."..."I always say the root cause is political disputes, poverty and illiteracy,"...

'political disputes' = Infidels own all the good stuff.

'poverty' = Learn bomb-making, suicide missions, kidnapping, and beheading and be stupid enough to expect that you'll always have a career.

'illiteracy' = Teach youth all they need to know in Madrassas. Follow the Quran--submit to the Elders and Clerics.

Dunno about bin Laden's rationalizations, but you can find some dumb-ass American 'splanations in this month's Atlantic Monthly's cover article by James Fallows (who has been against the intervention since day one), "Bush's Lost Year." Fallows blames the U.S., and, of course, backed up by all kinds of "intelligence" and "diplomatic" officers, for Islamic Jihad for the same reasons as Musharaff: U.S. support for Isreal and islamic poverty.

Dumb is as dumb says and does. Fallow's logic is that since the US has invaded Iraq, the US has increased opposition to it, and strengthened, thereby that opposition. At the same time, Fallows asserts that the cause of said opposition is US support for Isreal and US intervention in the Mid-East. That is, stronger US support for Isreal and greater US intervention in the Mid-East is, by Fallow's logic, to have created greater opposition and a higher risk of more attacks. That is, less US support for Isreal and less US intervention in the mid-east would lessen the threat.

Dead, worry less about what the Jihadists are saying and worry more about their apologists back home, such as James Fallows.

Great point.

Bodansky made a similar observation in his book about bin Laden, and his devolution into madness.

Bull Squat...

The cause of terrorism, is the murderous cult that dictates they behave like animals.... ISLAM..

I'm beginning to believe the only difference between "moderate" and "militant" Muslims -- is that the moderate Muslims are still too meek to take up arms and are simply applauding the "militant" Muslims from afar..

As if Musharraf, who runs a nation in which terrorists thrive, is in a position to lecture ANYONE on eliminating terrorism.
I don't think so.

Here is straight from the shoulder advice from America's most critically important ally who is actally waging war against terrorists and dodging assination attempts for doing so. He is telling us our support of Israel is making his position untenable and the posters on this thread reply, so what, we will support Israel even at the cost of America's interests.

If we have to chose between Pakistan and Israel, the choice is clear, assuming we really want to protect America from a terrorist nuclear attack. The posters here will court that risk to support Israel. I would not.

blaming our support of Israel for terrorism is just an excuse for them to do what they want. why don't the oil rich middle eastern countries take the Palestinians in and feed and educate them, give them jobs? they want them to suffer also, to keep this going. how come Israel could live with Arabs in their country, but they can't live with Jews? phonies!!!!!!

Poverty is a predictable result of the caustic combination of economic repression and political tyranny practiced by Arab despots and Muslim theocrats like yourself, Gen. Musharraf.

This sounds like a diplomatic attempt at highway robbery. "Give us all your money or we'll behead your citizins." It's also a load of bull. When do these countries step up to the plate and start taking care of their own people? The world seems to have appointed us the world's ATM machine and they're all using stolen credit cards.

Once an Arab, always an Arab I guess. Get a clue, Musharraf. It's not our job to address your poverty, nor your business if we support Israel.

Sad that we are constantly forced to do business with people like this. The Founders had it right when they counciled to make our treaties few and our business our own.

Exactly...

Poverty one of the causes of terrorism? Right... The richest countries in the world are moslem, and they're the ones that fund terrorism.

And the US support of Israel being another root cause? OK, please explain how this relates to the terrorism against buddists and hindus and animists in asia and africa.

Yonif, you hit it right on the head. "Poverty" and "US support of Israel" are simply convenient excuses, as well as convenient scapegoats for the rich muslem and arab countries. It's important for them to set up a distraction for their own repressed people. Right out of Orwell's "1984."

Here is straight from the shoulder advice from America's most critically important ally...

One mans "straight shoulder" is another mans backstabber. If Pakistan was not under "friendly" military occupation, the "Islamic bomb" would be going of in American cities. This war is a tad bit deeper than you seem to think. Before we even set foot in Afganistan, we set a .44 Mag at Musharraf's temple and said "do you feel lucky, 'friend'? He straightened his shoulders and said "HaBeBe", my best friend, where have you been all these years!!! Do not forget that when Pakistan announced the completion of their first sucessful nuclear tests that they announced it as the "Islamic Bomb", not the Pakistani Bomb.

I for one am very glad the adults are back in charge of the country. Clintoon and his cronies would have got us nuked. Bush plays poker Texas style, with a pistol in his lap.
