EXCLUSIVE
STATEMENT FROM DAN RATHER:
Last week, amid increasing questions about the authenticity of documents used in support of a 60 MINUTES WEDNESDAY story about President Bush's time in the Texas Air National Guard, CBS News vowed to re-examine the documents in questionand their sourcevigorously. And we promised that we would let the American public know what this examination turned up, whatever the outcome.
Now, after extensive additional interviews, I no longer have the confidence in these documents that would allow us to continue vouching for them journalistically. I find we have been misled on the key question of how our source for the documents came into possession of these papers. That, combined with some of the questions that have been raised in public and in the press, leads me to a point whereif I knew then what I know nowI would not have gone ahead with the story as it was aired, and I certainly would not have used the documents in question.
But we did use the documents. We made a mistake in judgment, and for that I am sorry. It was an error that was made, however, in good faith and in the spirit of trying to carry on a CBS News tradition of investigative reporting without fear or favoritism.
Please know that nothing is more important to us than people's trust in our ability and our commitment to report fairly and truthfully.

What a load of Texas manure! If he knew then....which only means if he knew Buckhead and the others would be paying attention and catch him, he wouldn't have done it. He's a sidewinding snake trying to slither out of a bad situation instead of being a MAN and admitting that he knew they were fake and ran with them anyway!
SeeBS has no credibility left. Only firing him and rebuilding with less bias "new" blood will save their butts!

>Right, CBS should be outing the whole story now. If they don't, then they have more to hide than they are saying.
Exactly!! What we are still seeing is CBS COVERUP... I still think this is going to Blow Wide Open and there is going to be lots of fallout...

David Blum on FOX says source of documents could still be Republican. And you know what? So what if it was. (not that I think it was)
It would still prove CBS is a craphole full of lies and deception, so they can knock that off right now!

How crazy then is the statement that the documents cannot be authenticated? They (Rather Biased and CBS) are still hoping there are Kool-aid drinkers out there who believe the charges are accurate if not the documents.

Limbaugh suggested that the press release is for internal consumption so as to judge just how bad the morale is.
If everybody believes Dan's statement, nobody has to fall on a sword.
Given that assumption, then by not admitting to the fraud, it doesn't appear to necessary to fire anybody.
Ingraham had a guy on from the American Enterprise Institue, talking about the legal issues.
The ones most injured by Dan & CBS are Bush, who's not going to sue, and the "people down in Texas" - the family of long
deceased Killian, the purported "author" of the memos.

I just went to their website and posted a message that they need to reveal who the perp is in order to maintain any credibility.

Isikoff on FOX saying CBS statement raised more questions. They are trying to pin this on Burkett. But that raises the question what steps did they take to check out Burkett's story.

CBS would toss them over the side in a heartbeat With the absolute hate I hear towards Pres. Bush coming out of SeeBS, I doubt they want to be the ones that shed any amount of truth on this kerfuffle....
SeeBS, or at the least Rather wants Kerry to win.
So how can they come out and destroy any chance Kerry would have to win?

He also stated said that Kerry was pushing this 60 Minutes piece as a "must see" to his traveling press for several weeks PRIOR to it coming out. Huh? It looks like Cleland is signaling Kerry's campaign that he will not fall on his sword quietly. Or no? What a tightrope CBS is walking in this to protect Kerry.

"Dan The Cowardly Man, released a statement so he didn't have to take questions..."
It would be deliciously ironic to see another non-CBS network news show follow him and his family around; corner them without warning; and then rip them a new one on national TV for avoiding to address the questions.
Better yet, maybe 60 Minutes I can do an expose on 60 Minutes II?

Why no comment on Ben Barnes and his proved lies?
The memos aren't the only lies in this 60 Minutes report.

ROTF(ip)LMAO ABC Radio news at 1 PM ET says CBS knows who Burkett's source is but won't announce it because they can't verify it! Yeah, like that's ever stopped them before.

This confirms with The Hill's article on the DNC producing the Fortunate Son bit with the CBS memos. So, what comes first - Rather's hit piece or the DNC's hit piece.
IIRC, per other reports, CBS and DNC admitted they had the documents some 6 weeks before the 60 Minutes airing. So, these docs apparently didn't just show up. However, the faxed set from Kinkos apparently were faxed in early September.
That creates a discrepancy in the dates. For CBS/DNC to have had the docs 6 weeks would put the time around early August.
So, did the docs got from 'somewhere' to Burkett who, in turn, faxed them in September?
There are still many unanswered questions.

The "working" the story in reality is the media engaging in plans of how to play the story and when the best timing for it is. That the dems created forgeries and CBS agreed to air them is what happened, and they threw out the "working on it" line to make it sound like she unearthed them due to journalistic digging when it was merely serving as a willing conduit for an attack on a sitting POTUS.
Just like clockwork, every time GWB runs for office, the media hauls out the service issue. No working being done, just plotting.
ABC radio news said Rather will issue an on-air apology tonight.
I won't be seeing or hearing it but will read about it here.
