EXCLUSIVE
STATEMENT FROM DAN RATHER:
Last week, amid increasing questions about the authenticity of documents used in support of a 60 MINUTES WEDNESDAY story about President Bush's time in the Texas Air National Guard, CBS News vowed to re-examine the documents in questionand their sourcevigorously. And we promised that we would let the American public know what this examination turned up, whatever the outcome.
Now, after extensive additional interviews, I no longer have the confidence in these documents that would allow us to continue vouching for them journalistically. I find we have been misled on the key question of how our source for the documents came into possession of these papers. That, combined with some of the questions that have been raised in public and in the press, leads me to a point whereif I knew then what I know nowI would not have gone ahead with the story as it was aired, and I certainly would not have used the documents in question.
But we did use the documents. We made a mistake in judgment, and for that I am sorry. It was an error that was made, however, in good faith and in the spirit of trying to carry on a CBS News tradition of investigative reporting without fear or favoritism.
Please know that nothing is more important to us than people's trust in our ability and our commitment to report fairly and truthfully.
Sounds like the "unimpeachable" source just got impeached.
Now, Dano, tell us who the source is.
That was the most pathetic response for engaging in criminal behaviour I have ever witnessed. The cover-up continues!!!!! I am more enraged now than ever over this! Time for all of us to Blitz CBS again. Where is the apology Dan? You KNEW these were forgeries!
" in the spirit of trying to carry on a CBS News tradition of investigative reporting without fear or favoritism. "
YEAH RIGHT. He jumped on democrat supporters and Bush haters like LCOL Killian's secretary, and Burkett, but wouldn't interview anyone who spoke out in Bush's favor or who were republican supporters. CBS: the antithesis of fair and balanced.
CBS: "We can't prove the docs are authentic."
I said over the weekend that Burkett will take the hit as the Democratic patsy. In the Texas tradition of Oswald under orders from octupus operative Guy Bannister, Burkett will take his orders tantamount to getting a job at the Texas School Book Depository so that the light will shine on him alone.
Right on -- the straight truth in that observation.
Yeah, there are, skypilot; why don't you ask yourself why CBS didn't go with what the experts they hired told them?
Hardly leaning, he's one of the left field fence posts.
Do you have Jon Lovitz as Tommy Flanegen, the compulsive liar?
THE CONGRESSIONAL INVESTIGATION MUST GO ON!!!! NO TURNING BACK.
BUCKHEAD FOR PRESIDENT!!
Woohoo!!
Nothing about their next story being getting to the bottom of the fraud.
Rush reporting that MSNBC only outlet reporting that Burkett coming forward. He says if true may be coordinated roll-out of statements.
As I just posted to someone else, that's what I figured---they will have Burkett come up with some nonsense to try to confuse and spin. It will not work.
And we'll all keep our eyes on Max Cleland.
FEDERAL WIRE FRAUD STATUTE
Title 18, United States Code, Section 1343.
Summary - If you are found guilty of using Radio, Television or phone lines (including fax machines) to commit Fraud you can get up to 20 years in prison.
No wonder CBS may now claims they and the source are the victims of fraud, not the perps.
Time for a document dump on Burkett's crazy statements to show why CBS should never have considered him as a source in the first place.
That is exactly what they are going to do. They will give Burkett the stage and let him lie about Bush and say they are covering the story. This will then allow the other members of the MSM to cover Burkett. If Burkett comes out and says he lied, the Press will eat this up and give Burkett all the time he wants to attack Bush. You ask wasn't Burkett discredited, yes. However, they will use Knox as a source, that some memo's about bush existed, CBS and Burkett will say that his first claim of Bush's record being cleansed was correct
Maybe if he cries a river on Larry King the vast muddle of oprah viewers will absolve him
MSNBC has a different public statement, or could it be an internal doc?
