My source familiar with discussions within CBS says that the discussions of "Dan falling on his sword" have been "muttered all over the place, but there is nothing solid - so far just "rumor and speculation." However, many staffers has been told to gather around 11 a.m. for an announcement of some sort.

Rather is a megalomaniac and will never voluntarily leave. He'll have to be dragged out of the chair kicking and screaming or else he'll die in the middle of a broadcast some day.
Under Texas law, felonies have been committed. CBS must either offer up a "fall guy/gal" or claim that they do not know the source of the documents.

This is a hoot!
Jim Geraghty reporting on the apologies owed by Dan Rather:
UPDATE: What do I mean by biggest, most spectacular apology of all time? Resignations would be nice. An apology to the first lady, for claiming she had no evidence the documents were forged. An apology to President Bush. An apology to Killian's widow. An apology to Killian's son. An apology to the two doubtful document experts who were ignored. An apology to Marcel Matley and James Pierce, whose views were apparently misrepresented. An apology to Hughes, who was asked to verify a fake document over the phone. An apology to every skeptic, who Dan Rather initially called "partisan political operatives." An apology to every computer and typewriter expert who Dan Rather pretended didnt exist. A separate apology for insulting the intelligence of those who use Microsoft Word, or who ever used a typewriter. An apology to CBS viewers, who apparently Rather thought he could treat like Montel Williams. An apology to Mrs. Knox, who was not interviewed before the initial story.
An apology to Retired Col. Walter Staudt, who was accused of pressuring others in the Texas Air National Guard to help George W. Bush in the memo.
And this is off the top of my head.
END OF QUOTE
My favorite: A separate apology for insulting the intelligence of those who use Microsoft Word, or who ever used a typewriter.
tee-hee
That's what I was thinking. I've been through a few of those at jobs past. They're real morale-builders. Typically a sign that sphincters are tightening at the management level.
Dan rating are down, this is an excellent opportunity to dump him. In fact management may have even been throwing him some rope (memogate).
Rather's boss has to go. The lousy ratings and now this. He will do the dirty work to get rid of Mapes and Rather so his successor won't. The only delay is for the lawyers to review the separation doc's.
I agree. Rahter will say the memo's are most likely not legit and he's sorry....BUT, the story will be pursued and Dan will be on top of it. Let's move on....
I say, NOPE! Not that easy Danny Boy. You mislead America in the 4th quarter of a Presidential election and a slippery apology just ain't gonna get you off the front pages.
Dan Finis. CBS almost Finis.
Whose next?
"Mistakes were made."
Mistakes were made
Yes I admit it.
Crimes were committed
And Hillary did it!
Dan Rather will NOT fall on his sword, not voluntarily.
The conundrum at CBS is how to protect both Rather and their Democrat Party.... AT THE SAME TIME.
But if they ultimately are forced to make a choice, they will toss Dan overboard before they will admit that they got the documents from Max Cleland on behalf of the Kerry campaign.
LOL-oh sure.
But should this, perchance, happen, does that mean that dan rather will take FULL RESPONSIBILITY for the DOCTORING and FALSIFYING of a memo written by a United States Military, now deceased, Colonel?
What avenue of penalty will be pursued?
There are several people involved who DESERVE to be COMPENSTATED for this devastating lie laid upon a sitting United States President and spread out across America.
Blather boy may not have the option of taking the fall. SeeBS is down 24-35% in key east coast markets last week (i.e. NYC and D.C.). SeeBS may push Blather out the door to save their ad revenue.
If they don't straighten this mess out soon, CBS will only be good for "All Gossip....All the Time."
......or just make it up, it seems.
What about an apology to pajama wearers ?
Dragged, kicking and screaming, would be a better scenario.
CBS News is a subset of CBS Corporation that is a part of Viacom. CBS News has stonewalled CBS Corporate and Viacom when questioned about authenticity. Last week the CBS News President made a delayed announcement saying they were redoubling their efforts to check on the story.
I expect that CBS Corporate and Viacom Corporate like good management and at a minimum the some scapegoats will be sacraficed and the CBS News President re-assigned or one of his VP given the blame.
