~ MILITARY SHORT SPEAK ~ |
|
The military seems to have a language of its own, with many terms, acronyms, initialisms and abbreviations that aren't generally used in the "civilian world." What is an acronym? It is a word created from the first letter of a series of other words. It is spoken as one word. What is an initialism? It is a word created from the first letter of a series of other words, but each letter is spoken separately. What is an abbreviation? It is a shortened version of a word. What is Short Speak? It is any and all of the above. Want to know what they are talking about? Read on... |

Thanks! (I think time spent making that wOOhOO graphic was more productive than that spent creating this example, which -- unless anyone read Tonk's pings to another thread -- is an inside joke most won't get anyway.)
COMPARE / CONTRAST
Majorette Boots VERSUS Birkenstocks
The objective was to show that wearing majorette (or go-go) boots is more fashionable than another footwear alternative made popular by liberals (Birkenstocks). Maybe I should have shown her wearing combat boots, but then she'd look sexy either way, so I guess I did make my point. Follow all that!? ;)

Besides, it smacks of, "Did you know I was an officer?"
Sure, but how many of your kids are officers?

1519 Magellan starts 1st successful circumnavigation of the world
The key word is "Start!"
Though not in a single continuous voyage, Magellan had traveled completely around the earth on a ship. This accomplishment made Magellan extremely famous amongst sailors and throughout all of Europe.
