BUSH'S GUARD 'ACCUSER' ADMITS FAULTY MEMORY (Texans for Truth owe $50,000)
NY Post via Google ^ | Feb 15, 2004 | Deborah Orin

Posted on 09/18/2004 9:07:51 AM PDT by MaineRepublic

February 15, 2004 -- Serious doubts have been raised about the stories of two key Alabama National Guard figures who questioned whether President Bush showed up for weekend duty there in the early 1970s.

Retired Brig. Gen. William Turnipseed, the 187th's Tactical Reconnaissance Group's former commander, recanted his statement that he couldn't remember if Bush reported for duty, now saying his memory is faulty because he's in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's disease.

And The Boston Globe, which took the lead in challenging Bush's Guard service, reported serious doubts about the account given by one of Bush's prime accusers.

Turnipseed reversed gear after retired Lt. Col. John "Bill" Calhoun went public to say he remembered Bush well, and that in fact it was Turnipseed, then a colonel, who introduced Bush to him.

"Col. Turnipseed brought [Bush] in when he first came to me. I just know that he saw him there," Calhoun told The Post. Turnipseed said he regards Calhoun as trustworthy and believes he'd remember it correctly.

Calhoun's ex-wife, Patsy Burks, said she remembers her husband talking about Bush back in the 1970s when he switched from the Texas Air National Guard to Alabama, where he was working on a political campaign for family friend, Winton "Red" Blount.

Another Alabama Guardsman, Joe LeFevers, told The Birmingham News earlier this week that he remembers seeing Bush on the Alabama base.

Retired Lt. Col. Bill Burkett had claimed he heard Bush aides talking about having his Guard records scrubbed and saw it happen.

But the Globe reported Thursday that Burkett's corroborating witness, former Chief Warrant Officer George O. Conn, disputes virtually every point in Burkett's account.

Now, wouldn't that group Texans For Truth owe these guys $50,000 each: John "Bill" Calhoun, William Turnipseed, and Joe LeFevers?

They were offering a reward for anyone who remembered seeing President Bush in the Alabama Air National Guard.

I saw the texans for truth advertisement.

I found it quite interesting that of all the witnesses
on the screen, the name, rank, and unit was identified,
but the dates of their tenure there are
conspicuously ABSENT.

Was this by oversight or design? When did these
people serve?

Wow. This is great!

I can't wait to see this on the next 60 Minutes broadcast so the American people can finally see the truth about these baseless claims.

We need to see past Burkett - he's going to take the fall here to protect the campaign (and Rather).

Since the anti-Bush memos are said to be "fake but accurate," I think this new information will be called "true but wrong."

Bet they found out that the guy is taking medicine for Alzheimers.

Wonder if the 86 year old lady is on it, too? I mentioned this the other day as I saw the interview and she was very careful of what she attested to in the way of "real" not "her feelings".

Probably her only TRUTH was that she never typed them. Of course not, they're copies. Everything else sounded just like "Ye old Office Gossip" and for a few bucks, I'll repeat what I FEEL was going on.

I agree. CBS is in an industrial strength Orwellian, "Newspeak" mode right now.

Did you notice the dateline on this???

Why hasn't this been reported in the MSM? It seems to end this entire argument.

Personally, I think Bush has played Briar Rabbit to perfection. At least in the sense that they haven't done a whole lot to end what, after minimal investigation, becomes a non-issue.

Every day this is a story is one less day for Kerry to "get his message out" (oh wait, there is no message, forget it)

However this WoC report from last winter still stands.

WoC news service is reporting: More bad news for the President. No one living along Air Base Blvd recalls seeing Lt. Bush driving onto the Alabama NG base.

"My parents lived here and they never told me anything," said a current resident in the area. . .

"My father is sure he never saw Bush driving toward the base. He'd remember if he had," said a former resident who lived on an Air Base Blvd side street until 1975 . . .

"I just feel that he was never here," said an 86-year old woman driving along Air Base Blvd on her way through town. "Those Republican Bush boys were a snotty sort."

if someone actually sues CBS/60Minutes/Rather/Mapes, I would imagine their phone and cell phone billings would become available. We might see then who was talking with whom and when. I just don't know who has "standing" in the courts to sue.

"We need to see past Burkett - he's going to take the fall here to protect the campaign (and Rather)."

Nope, having Burkett take the fall won't save Rather. Reminder, he "stood behind" his story and promised that his source was "unimpeachable."

So if his source takes the fall, then his source wasn't "unimpeachable," which means Rather goes down as either the easiest newsman to be duped in world history, or, based upon phone logs and witnesses subpoenaed at CBS, he goes down as a willing conspiracist to defraud the American public (and more).

What a bunch of contemptuous liars the DemoRATS are. Is there anything worse than people who tell bald faced lies to hurt the reputations of others? It really amounts to murder, by character assassination.
