Senior Chinese leaders in the Central Military Command -- second in power only to President Jiang Zemin -- have predicted war with Taiwan within the next five years.
Beijing's next five-year economic plan began this year, meaning Zhang's threat falls within the plan's 2001-2006 time frame.

That's what Chamberlain argued, vis a vis the Sudetenland.
ACtually, those are the company headquarters in Taiwan. In reality, most of the factories are now located in the PRC. Since most of those companies are run by the sons of those who fled the mainland in '49, the PRC has used their attachment to their old home towns to their advantage. They have convinced the Taiwanese businessmen that it is OK for them to set up plants on the mainland and indeed, the PRC has largely left them alone. Sun Tzu said draw your opponent in. Hmmmmm .....
The UK were worried about India, Singapore, etc. They used the same rationale as you are using here....
Nothing like a little PRE-PROGRAMMING! Idiots.
And India, Thailand, Mexico and a number of other nations far more worthy and decent than the Red Communist PRC would be our friends. We certainly don't NEED the PRC. The PRC is totally overblown in terms of economic importance.
"China moves her pieces all over the Great Game board : Venezuela, Sudan, Panama, the OAS, Taiwan..."
And they still have a game piece they have yet to put up on the board. The 'Queen'.
"Draw your opponent in" - Sun Tzu
"Get the US to relocate all industry to the PRC" - the likely thoughts of the PLA generals
Really? You think that PRChina would be THAT stupid?
China will not need many allies. They can silence Japan, S. Korea, the Philippines quite easily. ANZUS allies will be more challenging--but remember, PRChina already has the capacity to nuke LosAngeles. That means they CERTAINLY can nuke Melbourne...
Unless I missed something, the USA has a treaty obligation to defend Taiwan.
It will not be a matter of eeenie-meenie, or he loves me/he loves me not.
We GOTTA go.
Treaties are nothing more than contracts. We have plenty of qualified lawyers that can find loopholes through anything!
A Taiwanese simulation run by their Ministry of Defense stated that Taiwan would more or less succumb in 6 days.
I entirely concur. It's like a gigantic game of chess, and we are seeing the opening moves. China :
- corners the semiconductor market,
- boosts its economy,
- woos oil-prducing countries,
- sets up observer posts along the sealanes used by the tankers that are vital to our economy,
- builds up its military by buying or building state-of-the-art warplanes, tanks and warships,
- controls one of the most vital straits for Western commerce.
And this is probably the visible tip of the iceberg. The Soviets would have done half of that, there would have been some NATO alert long ago. But the Chinese are much more subtle, and they just place their pieces on the game board without being overly aggressive.
Soon we'll find out that the amiable Chinese smile has sharp teeth, with no other choice as to concede the game, or fight in a less than favorable position.
If the Chinese economy collapses, they won't starve quietly at home. That's for sure.
