CBS EXECS CONCERN OVER VIEWERSHIP PLUNGE; RATHER RATINGS FADE IN MAJOR MARKETS

CBS executives on both coasts have become concerned in recent days that Dan Rather's EVENING NEWS broadcast has plunged in the ratings since the anchor presented questionable documents about Bush's National Guard service.

NIELSEN numbers released this week show Rather fading and trailing his rivals in every Top 10 city, other than San Francisco, with audience margins in some cities running more than 6 to 1 against CBS!

Executives fear many voters inclined to vote for Bush are now switching off Rather.

"The audience appears to becoming polarized," a top CBS source said from LOS ANGELES on Thursday. "Rightly or wrongly, we're being perceived as 'anti-Bush,' which I do not think is fair to Dan, who is a fine journalist... of course we do not like to see the ratings coming back the way they are this week."

In Philadelphia, the nation's #4 market, Rather pulled a 2.6 rating/5 share on Tuesday night against ABC's 13.3 rating/23 share and NBC's 4.0/7.

In Chicago, Rather hit a 2.3/5 to ABC's 9.2/20.

CBS trailed ABC by more than 2 to 1 in Los Angeles.

And in the nation's top market, New York, Rather finished not only behind NBC NIGHTLY NEWS and ABC WORLD NEWS TONIGHT -- but also pulled less audience than reruns of the SIMPSONS, WILL & GRACE and KING OF QUEENS.

Rather finished dead last in New York during the 6:30 pm timeslot among all broadcast channels tracked by NIELSEN on Tuesday.

Boortz reading some report that viewer comments/complaints are running 6 to 1 against Dan Rather and CBS Execs are under pressure to resolve the situation.

Sorry if this idea has been floated here before... Why don't we mail Dan Rather some Pajamas? Imagine the mailroom at CBS, flooded with those bubble-wrap envelopes, all filled with pajamas. No need to buy expensive ones- Just something cheap. The Ret. address could be something like "From the Pajamaheddin", or something similar.

A check some hotels in the area to see just who paid Gramma's hotel bill and meals while up in NYC, if shown to reflect the CBS Accounting Department, will evaporate any inkling that this woman was "independent" and "unbiased". She's a paid CBS shill is what she is.

You have to put this in context. "CBS-News" has a revolt on its hands and bad ratings aren't going to help. Ratings equal advertising revenues, which means ViaCom & CBS Corporate willingness to go along with the CBS News division. The President of CBS News has to do something quickly to resolve this or he and Dan and a bunch of others are toast.

CBS Houston Radio Affiliate drops CBS News broadcasts-link

Now add to this revolt the underlying ratings problem that has recently sufaced at CBS News, you have a "managment problem" that requires CBS/ViaCom action. Hence the President of CBS News making public statements.

The following is the summary of the RNC network news ratings...

NBC ranked second on both Tuesday and Wednesday, with 5.1 million and 4.5 million viewers, respectively. CBS fell from 4.4 million on Tuesday to a lowly 2.6 million on Wednesday, suffering from a weak "lead-in" from the Latin Grammy Awards an hour earlier.

ABC fell from 4.3 million to 3.3 million one night to the next, while cable networks MSNBC and CNN also lost viewers, each dipping from more than 1.5 million to about 1.2 million. MSNBC finished both nights slightly ahead of CNN.

The Fox victory was believed to be the first time a cable channel has attracted more viewers than any of the three major broadcasters during an event covered by all the networks, the News Corp.-owned outlet said.

Broadcast network executives grumbled privately that Fox's triumph was no surprise given the cable channel's reputation as a conservative-leaning outlet favored by the Republican Party. One network official who spoke on condition of anonymity called the Republican National Convention a "made-for-Fox event."

Click-Fox News beats all rivals at GOP ratings (beats ABC/CBS combined, NBC/MSNBC combined)

FOX NEWS beats all networks in ratings last night including ABC, NBC, CBS

And now for a trip down memory lane....Remember when the DNC tried to block the electronic media from airing Swift Boat Vet ads? This is the threats their attorneys made to the media about airing false information......

Dems can never stand for anything.

You are right. Evening News began as a news reader sitting behind a desk, reading wire service copy. No tapes, no graphics, no "field reports," and it lasted 15 minutes. No, I ain't old enough to remember that, but I've seen clips. LOL.

Ms Knox isn't just a grandmotherly former secretary whom Dan Rather happened to come across the last few days when this fiasco started.

Ms Knox apparently was involved in a meeting with Burkett and Barnes' attorney weeks ago--before the documents surfaced. She may be much more involved in this fraud than we know, yet.

Well, when you put forth forgeries as credible evidence to use against a sitting President in a Presidential campaign, we suspect BIAS against our President!!!

I haven't watched CBS news in a long time. I suspect while Bush supporters may be turning it off, it far more likely "neutral" viewers are the ones responsible for the decline. They don't like major media organizations lying to them.
