Nice find. The current VFP seems to be a new incarnation of a group of the same name which inspired the idea of the VVAW in the 1960s. The 1960s VFP in turn derived from the American Veterans for Peace (AVP), an antiwar group which the Communist Party had originally formed in 1951 to protest the Korean War. In the late 1960s and early 1970s the VFP and VVAW worked in conjunction with a number of antiwar groups operating out of 5 Beekman Street and 156 Fifth Avenue in New York--I'm comparing this with the 521 Fifth Avenue address your post mentions and wondering if there's any connection. I'm not familiar with the Washington DC addresses but I'll crossreference those and see if anything comes up--something about them seems to ring a bell but I can't put my finger on it offhand. FWIW one of the main Washington addresses antiwar groups linked to the VVAW were using in the 1960s and 1970s was 1029 Vermont Avenue NW.

Burkett may be the one of the foot soldiers, perhaps even the creator of the documents. But Burkett is not the "conductor", as you put it. Burkett did not give Dan Rather the lead in his pencil. Burkett didn't coordinate the handoff with the Kerry campaign and the DNC.

But Burkett gets us a step closer to The Unimpeachable Source.

Yes and a bunch of people knew about these. Remember Susan Estrich was screeching about getting dirty and an attack on Bush's guard record, and she mentioned new documents. This was well in advance of the CBS story. Now Susan has become scarce.
Then there's the DNC launching it's operation Fortunate Son almost simultaneously with the Rather debacle. Also, these documents fit in very well, too well, with the story we know about Bush from existing non-forged documents to be the work of some hate filled revenge seeker.
As I've maintained for some time now this is a criminal conspiracy involving the DNC, the Kerry campaign, and CBS to use forged documents to influence a federal election.

Hard to fully trace but Burkett, Barnes, Mapes & Rather's spawn were all near this key nexus.

My guess is Burkett forged the documents on his computer, called CBS... who sent Mary Mapes down to get them. She went to the closest Kinkos store (Abelene) and faxed them to Rather.

I bet it went down somethng like this: Bill Burkett tells Dan Rather he has some memos. Dan can not believe his good fortune and tells him to send them ASAP. Bill stalls Dan and tells him he will send them in a couple of days.

Now, Bill may be a complete moron but he locates a old, used typewriter and starts typing up a forged document. He is probably a piss poor typist and can not even get the paper in the carriage straight. Well, he probably spends endless hours and days trying to make a decent forged document that does not look like a 13 year old's attempt to murder a piece of paper.

Meanwhile Dan keeps calling him asking him about the memos. Dan, totally exasperated, frustrated and anxious to get his hands on the incriminating evidence, tells Bill to fax the memos today or forget the whole thing. In sheer frustration Bill goes to his computer and prints out a forged document using MS Word and a laser printer. It looks too good so he rumples it up of few times then makes a copy of a copy of a copy...until he convinces himself it looks thirty-two years old. Then he just faxes the damn memos.

Dan gets the memos and just about craps his pants. He is so thrilled he does not even bother to notice the proportional spacing, kerning, superscript "th" etc. He just runs with it. Nobody ever accused Dan of being the smartest reporter on the planet. Busted!

It comes from a nut site, but it shows that Bush got a polio vaccination somewhere in Apr 73. So he was on duty somewhere that had an interest in his shot records.

I keep thinking of John Sasso, the man Pat Caddell called a political thug or gangster when he was recently added to the Kerry team. He's the guy who went after Biden for plagiarizing (something I think was actually an error on Biden's part since he supposedly had credited the author in previous speeches). That opened the floodgates to a bunch of character questions though and Biden pulled out. Sasso did it by handing off tapes of the speech to the press.
