A senior House Republican has formally requested a congressional investigation into an apparent criminal conspiracy to rig the 2004 presidential election by forging records from President Bush's National Guard service and having them reported by CBS News.
In a letter Tuesday night to Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., chairman of the Subcommittee of Telecommunications and the Internet, Rep Christopher Cox, R-Calif., called for a probe into what he described as "the continued use by CBS News of apparently forged documents concerning the service record of President George W. Bush intended to unfairly damage his reputation and influence the outcome of the 2004 presidential election."

Bottom line is CBS does not have to protect the source since the documents provided were fake fraudulent forgeries. Since the information received was tainted they can reveal the source without compromising their policy.

*sigh* It would have been nice to have had David Dreier write such a letter. It might have taken the heat off for the Political Human Sacrifice thing that KFI is doing. Ahh well, I'm sure there will be Dreier interviews where he says this isn't such a great idea before the election and how this is making the whole deal into a partisan issue...
Maybe I'm wrong.
Doubt it though.

Unfortunately, it is not only the liberals. The Republicans all play politics with the truth as well. They all scratch each other's backs and just put on a show for the public.
Eight years of the obfuscations during the Clinton years proved (to me at any rate) that everything is for sale with this bunch. The only thing they fear is an educated and angry public. Even then, they just play "rope a dope" with any issue until the public forgets about it. It is on both sides of the isle.
I have lost all faith in Chris Cox. He talks a good game and lets us down in the end.

I agree, it's not a public opinion issue at this point, it's a legal issue. They seem to have zero appreciation for the gravity of what they attempted with this: it's beyond just absence of journalistic integrity, but it's a blatant misrepresentation with an intended political consequence, by a corporation which presents itself to the public as news and enjoys bandwidth regulated by the FCC.
What laws apply? Surely they can't get away with this with the only slap on the wrist coming in the form of a bit of criticism from their MSM colleagues.

True, and that is why these scapegoat trial balloons about individuals not directly involved in the DNC or Kerry campaign (at least on the surface) providing CBS with the documents are being floated. The handoff to CBS is a red herring. The real issue is who created the documents and the chain of custody from there (through the DNC and Kerry campaign) to the person who handed them off to CBS. That will never be known until subpoenas are issued and people are forced to talk.

I'm not up for having any more of a political food fight than we already have. When the time comes the FBI should be brought in. This is a criminal conspiracy.
The Dems and CBS are busy losing whatever credibility they might have had. If the Dems stick to their talking points and present strategy they'll be lucky to break 35%.

What laws apply? When Congress gets involved, the issue involves not only existing laws, but future laws that may be specifically tailored to address this type of situation, as a matter of public policy.

Thanks for your opinion. You are right. On all sides the Congress is out of control and way beyond their mandate. It's like all other bureaucracy....it costs us a ton to do what ends up screwing the public. Sheesh!

In the 2000 election, we had CNN calling Florida for Gore BEFORE the polls were closed in Florida (which I consider something they should have been sued for).
It is clear now, with the Drudge information from the former secretary that this is indeed Fraud.
God bless

I don't have a URL to the CBS docs at the tips of my fingers. On one of them, there was a redaction of an address, though you could still read through the blackout & read it. Also, some words were underlined.
People who have been following the storyline might know by now that the address was the wrong address. George W Bush no longer lived at that address on 04 May 1972, as has been shown my other documents which had been previously released.
If you follow the link posted by MistyCA on post 49, you will see a confirmation of the other 2 documents first discovered on a USAT URL & posted by charleston1 .
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2004-09-09bushdocs.pdf
The 04 May 1972 document on the USA Today site has no address redaction, no underlined words. They claim to have gotten them independently & I guess Boston Globe also got copies of them.
An investigation about this will likely go deeper than just CBS, though CBS is on the hot seat, cuz they wanted the scoop on the story, while the other 2 media outlets held back.

The timing is poor. CBS needs to be forced to dig themselves deeper and deeper. Criminal and civil remedies (or Congressional investigations) can take place at a later time, but for now we don't need Rather hiding behind the shield that "we really could vindicate ourselves, but on advice of counsel we dare not say anything."
