Suddenly, everyone's turning against us Baby Boomers
Richmond Times Dispatch ^ | 9/14/04 | RAY MCALLISTER

Whoa! What's happening?

Why are people turning on us?

We're the Baby Boomers, you know.

The Mighty Boomers.

We invented everything from money to music to sex, did we not? Nothing good ever happened until we came along.

Now people are turning on us.

We Baby Boomers are being made to feel . . . guilty.

Ridiculous, isn't it?

People have tried to make us feel guilty before. They said we consumed too much. Or we were too shallow. Or we only thought about ourselves.

Excuuuuse me.

Who should we think about? Somebody else?

All that was just jealousy. Even Tom Brokaw came along and said the World War II generation was "the greatest." Jealousy. Pure jealousy.

Sure, they saved the world.

Did they ever throw a party like Woodstock?

Oddly, that makes boomers the target. My parents are the generation doing the RV in AZ thing and it's my children who are not quite on their own. So, it's me paying for both. And I'm most distinctly a boomer.

So, if any generation has learned by hard experience what it means to be a supporter of others, it's mine. Now, do many of my generation also shirk their duties. You betcha. So, the comment above is right: to label by decade of birth is to waste bandwidth (not quite a quote, yes?). Losers are losers no matter what year they first saw light of day and those willing to eat somebody else's breakfast can be born any day of the week (or decade of the century).

Cheers!

"Those of us from the depression era and earlier have known and said the baby boomers were wortless, they are just now getting the message."

Yeah, that's right. You guys from the Greatest Socialist Generation really took good care of things. </sarcasm>

The legacy which started with your generation has only been magnified in the Baby Boomers -- starting with socialism and all the idea that the gov't is going to solve everything. You share part of the blame for all the crap that BB's have put on this country, so don't wash your hands of all that just yet.

10 Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart.
11 And these men have not known my ways: so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.

I'm doing my best to turn my kids and other young people against the older generations.

Yeah, good idea! Everyone has to pull there own weight. "Sorry, gramps, you're just not cutting it anymore. Have fun living in the cardboard box."

And these are the same people who bemoan the loss of family values and old morality.

No, the first mistake was teaching them how to talk. A very limited (no word for no) vocabulary would be sufficient.

That was the second mistake, "no" is the only word they know how to use.

Giving them shoes let them gossip across the backyard fence trading conspiratorial plans for the destruction of mankind.

G-G-GranPappy, had it right use a big club, no shoes, never let em out of the cave.

The other thing I meant to say is that on the other hand, there ARE those of us who are 24 who have never taken a student loan. Those of us who got real jobs and started trying to create wealth for ourselves, only to get taxed into submission the second we started earning a paycheck.

So don't get pissed at us because some 90's hippie wanna-be schmucks are sitting around sipping $9 latte's using their $2000 laptops at Starbucks courtesy of their Yuppie boomer parents' AmEx card.

This is why you are seeing a huge backlash and the awakening of the 20-somethings who are turning out to be arch-conservative / libertarian types... I know most of my friends are politically arch-conservative / libertarians and we reject all tenants of handouts and socialism except from what comes from our families helping us to start out..

Gov't loans? We don't need no stinkin' gov't loans!

Was it fear of being called a chauvinist, a desire to be "progressive" or what?

Bluntly, I think it was a desire to get laid. I think that most men would put up with almost anything in the pursuit of sex. But I'm a pessimist.

Everyone seems to have forgotten the Democrats ad that had George W. Bush pushing an elderly person in a wheelchair over a "cliff".

They need to come to a decision whether they are FOR or AGAINST euthenasia. And "the decision to terminate" should not be decided by the person being killed, they don't get a say as a fetus, I don't see anything changing later in life. < /sarcasm >

I like the way you think. Me, I'm thinking about making Medicare supply Viagra so the X'ers can support my love-children until they die.

Some of the responses in this thread sound like they are coming from a spoiled generation. Boomers didnt start SS. We have just paid more money into it then any generation probaly ever will. I think boomers kids are spoiled much more then boomers.

I dunno about everyone else but I wasnt spoiled (1957). I have worked my ass off to get where I am. Problem is america's golden age is over. Things are going downhill thanks to the fact that the boomers defeated communism. Now we have two billion plus people who want the american dream instead of poverty in a mud hut and eating rice all their life.
Other gens including The greatest generation started the cold war first by getting into WW1 which we probaly should have staid out of and then by turning russia into a superpower. They should have listened to Patton? or was it McArthur?

Boomers biggest mistake is gonna be turning China into the next superpower. Boomers were not responsible for outlawing prayer in school or abortion.(IMHO thats when things started downhill fast when we told God he was no longer welcome)

But I do see and hear a lot of hate coming from X,Y and Z gens. From what I have seen they continue to be spoiled rotten by boomer parents and lazy.(Not all kids of course but I say the vasy majority). Too many 20 something year olds made 60 grand plus for a few years in the 90's. They are bitter because now they are being slapped with reality. That was abnormal. You start at the bottom of the ladder and work your way up. You dont make 60 grand plus till later in life after spending 20 years working and learning if you make it at all.

>Enough hatred in the world already without "let's get the generation before us/after us" crap.<

Really. The sad thing is, this is going on within Free Republic. I dare say the majority of boomers on this board are more than aware and willing to do everything possible NOT to be beholden to the gub'mint. I'll bet more of us are bound and determined to be stewards of what we have, while on this plane of existence, so we can leave our children with some sort of legacy.

Come on, guys, quit with the generational war. We should all be more or less on the same page, if we are part of this forum.
