These forgeries are so obvious that it appears more like a trap was set for CBS and the Kerry campaign with it, and that Rather swallowed the bait whole. Most likely perp in my estimation is Clinton blackops, with the objective to totally derail the gigolo's campaign.

Gotta keep it alive. This is a major case of fraud which amounts to election tampering. CBS should lose its license to broadcast over this since it amounts to a violation of a public trust.

Bill Glennon, a technology consultant and I.B.M. typewriter specialist who had posted his thoughts on the memos on a blog

If Glennon REALLY believes he can re-create the Killian memos with a 1972 era IBM, and he has $20,000 he is willing to put up, I'll match it and we'll see if he can duplicate them. He wins, he gets the whole $40,000. He can't duplicate them, I get the $40,000. I'll keep my original $20,000 and the forfeited $20,000 will be donated to the Swifties.

Amen...put up or shut up.

And...considering it was just a memo to file, that Killian would normally have written longhand...he only gets 5 minutes!

"Dan really put himself on the line and I can't imagine him knowingly defending something he knew not to be the case. "

Unless the source of the memos was Dan's daughter?
Lives in Texas.
Democrat activist.
Knew that Dan was looking for such memos, including contents.
Had access to Dan w/out going thru CBS staff.
Had such credibility with Dan that he would use memos without questioning them.
Would explain why CBS flatly states originals won't be produced but doesn't know why.
She probably has a computer and MS Word program.

are we keeping this alive or is the common wisdom to move on ?

CBS is hoping that we will get bored and burned out by this and move on to something else.

That's why we have to keep it going until CBS stands down.

"The story was thoroughly vetted as all pieces of '60 Minutes' are..."

CBS vetting process:

1. Is it anti-Bush?

2. If yes, it's "vetted."

3. If no, research further and place on back burner.

(I think I found these instructions stuffed into an old CBS reporter manual.)

;)

One of the experts CBS News said initially helped convince it that the documents were genuine, a handwriting expert named Marcel B. Matley, said in an interview yesterday that he believed the signature in the documents to be that of Colonel Killian. Asked if the signature could have been lifted from an official document by Colonel Killian and pasted onto forgeries, Mr. Matley said: "Sure. But we can't draw a conclusion from a possibility."

Thanks to Bonaparte for finding the following which was written in Using and Cross-Examining Handwriting Experts (PDF) by Marcel Matley:

The Problem with Copies ................ Do not passively accept a copy as the sole basis of a case. Every copy, intentionally or unintentionally, is in some way false to the original................. In fact, modern copiers and computer printers are so good that they permit easy fabrication of quality forgeries. From a copy, the document examiner cannot authenticate the unseen original but may well be able to determine that the unseen original is false. Further, a definite finding of authenticity for a signature is not possible from a photocopy, while a definite finding of falsity is possible.

"You're dealing with genuine professionals. (sic) The last thing in the world that any of these people would want is to phony something."

Maybe. "Was this the last dirty trick up their sleeve," would have to be operative question. Was this election going to be the last Rather was going to be able to influence from an anchor's chair?

Was it last," as in "I felt I had no other choice," or "I could see no alternative?" Perhaps more prophetically, "I found the my socks in the last place I looked."

Somewhere in California the ghost of Richard Nixon is walking around chuckling softly and murmuring, "You're running now, Dan, my boy." LOL! I wonder, have their been any cartoons of Nixon on Rather's heels? I've seen some of the strips, but not all, and none with Nixon. I wish I knew a cartoonist who could take this and run with it. (Any freepers who like the idea and know a cartoonist feel free to pass it on. I'd waive any copyright fees.) Cartoons are such powerful messengers.

Who really cares whether or not the memos are authentic?
Even if they are for real (which I do not believe they are), who gives a rat's ass whether or not George W. Bush showed up for a routine physical exam 38 years ago?
GWB never gave aid & comfort to the enemy.
GWB never went before Congress and falsely testified against his fellow officers and enlisted men who were still in combat.
GWB didn't hang out with Jane Fonda under the Viet Cong banner.

How coached is Glennon? First, he offers the typical liberal "scary opponents" garbage. Then, whe spends 15 minutes with the docs and he "believes" they "could have been" created on old typewriters. Yeah, some expert. That sure is a butt-covering statement of no real value.

Geez Louise - you are AWESOME ! Somebody ought to have you interview Rather. No kidding. I have not seen/read/heard such a concise, well-thought-out group of questions as you have written here on the website (I'll bet you're not even wearing your pajamas, either). I hope someone out there in the news media who CARES and wants to disseminate truthful information takes the time to look at your questions and USE THEM TO CHECK OUT THIS STORY.

For some unknown reason, Bill O'Reilly has taken a curious stance on this story and now blames the radio for keeping it alive. Doesn't that guy want the truth anymore? What's up with him?

I, WillVoteForFood, have been commissioned to examine these documents by CBS in an expert capacity. Below is my analysis.

These documents were produced on a MACHINE of some type. MACHINES existed in the early 70's. Therefore these documents are real.

Who really cares whether or not the memos are authentic?

True, but I am not doing this to discredit Kerry.

I want Danny Boy.

I'm tired of being lied to.
