Has anyone checked Bush's birthdate against the draft lottery?

Posted on 09/12/2004 5:26:50 AM PDT by meatloaf

Has anyone checked Bush's lottery number for the draft? If Bush was born on July 6, 1946 his birthdate was included in the first drawing in 1969. If I'm reading the results from the lottery correctly, Bush would have never been drafted and he knew it when he joined the TANG. Makes an interesting comparison with Kerry who tried who tried to get a deferrment to go to France.

How about checking me on this?

Good grief. Haven't you been here long enough to realize this is not 'Breaking News?'

Just to make this clear to everyone....

When did President Bush sign up with the TANG?

Bush is 58. I don't think they reinstated the lottery until 1969. He was well out of that window. My number was 283 in 1971.

Well, that's certainly interesting, and I haven't seen any discussion of it anywhere, but I don't know how relevant it is. Didn't Bush join the ANG before the lottery? He could not have known at that time he'd get such a high number, (327) if I read it correctly.

You're right Bush had a high draft number all 4 years of the draft, he never would have been drafted.

He entered the Guard in 68 though.

Good grief, I've been here for months and didn't know this. Seriously, it's an interesting thing to note. I'm "surprised" (NOT) that the media hasn't noticed this before. :-)

I have also heard that the waiting list for the TANG by enlisted men was long, but for officers it was much shorter and for pilots there really wasn't one.

I know this is off subject but I am interested to know if this is true.

I should have clicked the link. I didn't realize the 69 lottery covered multiple years.

I think he would have beenold enough to get out of college and be drafted in 1968. When did he graduate college?

If he joined TANG in 1968, that's the reason--ther was no lottery.

Draft was started in 69, with the first lottery draftees in 1970 (I know this fact with 100% certainty). Bush went into the Guard in 67 and one could claim he did it in anticipation of being drafted.

President George W. Bush was in the Yale Class of 1968. Since he graduated long before the draft lottery, the lottery number of 327 would only have kept him out of the draft if he had managed to avoid service from June 1968 through November 1969.

What is important is that President Bush did join the Texas Air National Guard, did receive a commission, did complete pilot training, did serve as a pilot of an F-102A, and did ask the requirements for PALACE Alert, a program to rotate experienced ANG pilots, that is, those with 500 or more flying hours, to the European or Southeast Asian theaters.

He most definitely was in that first lottery, I know because I follow him by exactly two months. This is a most important question because I believe also that his lottery number was so high, he would have NEVER been drafted.

http://www.landscaper.net/draft.htm

According to this site the draft ran continuously from 1948 to 1973.

The first lottery for Vietnam was held on December 2, 1969. It was for the year 1970. September 14 was the losing date. June 8 came in 366. The draft was discontinued in 1973.

You're correct, Glenn.

I don't think they reinstated the lottery until 1969. He was well out of that window. My number was 283 in 1971.

That was the last full year of draft number call-ups. My next older brother, 18 in 1971, got his lottery number in 1972. My year was 1973, I got number 55 but they called no one from my birthyear bracket, or any of the next four years, and less than a dozen numbers from the 1972 lottery.

Birthyear 1957 was the last year you even had to register for the draft. I know because my youngest brothers were born in '56, '58 and '59,
