President George W. Bush was in the Yale Class of 1968. Since he graduated long before the draft lottery, the lottery number of 327 would only have kept him out of the draft if he had managed to avoid service from June 1968 through November 1969.

What is important is that President Bush did join the Texas Air National Guard, did receive a commission, did complete pilot training, did serve as a pilot of an F-102A, and did ask the requirements for PALACE Alert, a program to rotate experienced ANG pilots, that is, those with 500 or more flying hours, to the European or Southeast Asian theaters.

In 1968, between 150 and 300 Americans were dying EVERY WEEK in Vietnam and they were drafting 18-19 yearolds. I graduated in 68 and I took pre-induction physical within weeks of graduation. No way he could have made it to the lottery unless he got medical deferment.
