DUSHANBE -- Afghan opposition commander Ahmad Shah Masood was wounded today when a bomb concealed in a video camera went off while he was being interviewed by a group of journalists.
The incident at his heavily-guarded residence in Khwaja Bahauddin, northern Afghanistan, killed an official and wounded Mr Masood in the leg.
"Masood gave an interview in his office to a group of Arab journalists who arrived from Kabul," said an AFP newsagency source at the Afghan embassy in the Tajikistan capital, Dushanbe.
"When the camera started filming, it exploded. It looks like a bomb had been concealed in it".
The 49-year-old leader of the armed resistance to Afghanistan's ruling Taliban was "feeling fine", he added.
The journalists, whose nationality and number the Afghan diplomat did not specify, were detained.
The Taliban Islamic militia captured Kabul in 1996, and now controls most of the country.
But Mr Masood's forces, a loose coalition of mainly ethnic Uzbek and Tajik commanders, continue to resist the Taliban in the far north of the war-ravaged country.
The Taliban administration is recognised only by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

USA TODAY SNIP 9/12/01
WASHINGTON -- U.S. officials have obtained information that points to exiled Saudi multimillionaire Osama bin Laden as the mastermind of the worst act of terrorism against the United States.
...Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the U.S. government was "in no way connected" to explosions in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, early today.
The rocket fire could have been retaliation for what U.S. officials say was the assassination of Afghan opposition leader Ahmad Shah Masood on Sunday. Bin Laden is believed responsible for that attack as well.

TIME.com - TIME MAGAZINE: "LONDON'S DIRTY-BOMB PLOT" (From the Oct. 11, 2004 issue of TIME magazine)
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Law-enforcement officials tell TIME that information from computer files seized with the group revealed plans for specific attacks in London, including "blowing up high-rise buildings housing multinational companies" by driving bomb-laden cars into underground garages. Other targets included the Heathrow Express, a rail line between the airport and London, and an unspecified synagogue. There were also plans for "hijacking a gasoline tanker and smashing it into a building." The British cell leader, Dhiren Barota.k.a. Issa al-Hinditraveled to New York City in early 2001, according to The 9/11 Commission Report, "to case potential economic and 'Jewish' targets." U.S. officials hope to learn from the continuing investigation whether a sleeper cell remained in the U.S. to carry out these missions."

NY POST.com: "GRAFFITI BOMBS"
Article Snippet: "The symbol, created with spray-paint and a stencil, has been popping up on the base of lampposts around the neighborhood for several months. It includes the number 1134 and an image of a missile with "NYC" on the side.
Sam, a local resident who asked that his last name not be published, said many of his neighbors share his interpretation.
"The number is the day after Election Day [11/3/04]. Somebody knows something. That is causing a lot of concern in the area. I called the FBI, but I don't feel they are taking it seriously," he said."

1134 upside down is "hEll"
The first one mentioned the limited value of presidential debates. I take issue with that because demeanor and how they deal with verbal attack are indicative of leadership abilities. Egotism, plasticized bravado and the method used to subjugate their opponent tell me a lot about how they perceive themself. Polls IMHO are totally unreliable. They can be skewed by mass responses of one or the other parties.
The other two links reference October 6th and 7th. Today is the 6th and it appears we've pretty much gotten through it. Contrary to the experts, I have more concern about the 8th - the day the debate is actually occurring.
You're welcome. It's fascinating to find online what we never hear from "the other media" until days later, if at all.

China reportedly moves over 30,000 troops near N Korean border
Thursday, October 7, 2004 at 10:45 JST
TOKYO China's People's Liberation Army moved more than 30,000 troops to areas along the Yalu River, which serves as the country's border with North Korea, earlier this month, the Sankei Shimbun said Thursday, quoting a source close to Japanese and Chinese relations.
The source was quoted as saying the move is a prelude to a major drill or an arrangement to stem the inflow of a rising number of North Koreans at the border, according to the newspaper. (Kyodo News)
