18 USC 506 covers the forging of government agency seals (ie: components of the military) and makes it a crime punishable by 5 years in prison and a fine to do so.
Might this explain why CBS and Dan Rather are now so forcefully insisting that the documents are not forgeries and they in fact hired experts to check them out??
If the documents are forged then Rather is in deep... er... crap.
No they didnt break that particular law. As far as I can tell they didnt use any official seal on the paperwork.
But by producing a document and claiming it is as official, along with a forged signature there is the law breaking.
It's doubtful that the "original" documents contained any offical seals that would be actionable in this case.
Seems to me that someone is deliberately attempting to skew the election.
If/when they are found ou they deffinitely will be found guilty of some kind of felony.
Dan "Stonewall" Rather to invoke the 5th Amendment
hahaha
Dan Rather has just been notified that his new job as a Wal-Mart greeter starts Monday...
Now they apparently have a typewriter that can produce the superscript, but that doesn't deal with all of the other problems with this account.
There is a lot of covering of assets going around.
I have an early 50s vintage Olympia that does superscrip but U.S. Military did not use foreign machines. Electric machnines were few and far between in 1972 and I never saw a superscripting proportional spacing type writer in my military career. That is not saying they did not exist but they were seldome outfits.
:) You are going from the point of view that they actually feel that they need to prove their case. They know the docs are fraudulent. They are raising just enough bluster to create just a tinge of doubt to get away with it.
i think Killians Wife should Sue CBS! CBS using that document without her permission was slander against her husband! It shows her husband trying to cover his ass and doing shady deals, unbecoming of an officer! SHE NEEDS TO SUE CBS BLIND!
(Did he break da law?)
I don't think we should press for any criminal charges for now. For now, the burden of proof is on CBS to show the documents are genuine. Once criminal charges come into play, they no longer bear that burden of proof.

[lol. Just practicing just in case.]
Isn't a signature nothing other than a seal of authority and attribution? When a forged signature is placed over a military title and rank it then strikes me as forging a government seal
Sorry, You can't defame a dead person.
But the question is, did the National Guard unit have a typewriter that could produce superscript? The chances of that are slim to none. National Guard units were poorly funded, operated on dregs of material and supplies, and were definately not given state-of-the-art typewriters. Besides, the guy's wife says he didn't even type and wasn't much of a note writer. All they're doing is trying to prove the lie. Give it up. Confess CBS. You LIED!!!!
I agree. I'm not pressing for criminal charges, just trying to explain why CBS decided to circle the wagons and refuse to conduct an investigation when last night they seemed very willing to do so.
