60 Minutes to Infamy- those forged memos and The Shot Heard Round the World

Here is a pretty good current summary of the situation:
The Shot Heard Round the World The echoes of the big Internet bang which annihilated a
60 Minutes story in under
12 hours are still resounding. The key riffs apparently started at
Powerline and as
Samizdata notes, the distributed intelligence of the Internet took over. Under the scrutiny of thousands of analysts, the CBS story began to melt down.
The start of it all:

The Thread that broke the Camels Back:Post 47, and the Freepers who busted C.B.S.
"Free Republic: Tomorrow's News Today."
Question: Who from the Kerry campaign is responsible?
CBS'S BIG BLUNDER? (Credits Free Republic) The Minneapolis lawyers who run powerlineblog.com were on the case early. Two of the blog's readers directed their attention to a note left on an Internet bulletin board on the freerepublic.com Web site the 47th posting on the topic there.
But Why? (list of candidates who forged the CBS document) This was going to be a late October surprise. They were going to release these forged documents on the weekend before the election, In this manner the Republicans wouldn't have time to respond. However, Kerry's numbers were so low, they panicked and release earlier
There's also some information on the American Spectator
site that makes a connection. Kerry is a stupid desperate man right now.
Rathergate
Gosh, the DNC is gonna have to stay up all night to keep up with the New Media in the future, aren't they?
And finally, the MSM ( MainStreamMedia, AKA the Jackal Pack Press ) catches up with the New Media of the Internet & Talk Radio:
Fox News to break forged document story ON NOW! The only down side on this that I can see is that we haven't gotten to spend any time discussing Teressa calling us all "common people"...
Son of Late Officer Questions Memos Attributed to His Dad Just to realize that in less than 24 hours, TankKC's suspicon and Freepers' fabulous investigative skills and know-how hatched the biggest story to hit the air waves since Zell's give-em-hell speech. Hell has just frozen over for CBS and Kerry/Edward...
-more-
Final nail in coffin:
Was Rather Duped by Anti-Bush Hoax?
Bush Guard Documents: Forged Well in truth CBS said the "believed" them to be authentic. They have given themselves a legal out. They didn't or can't "CERTIFY" them as authentic.
I've been working in the field for over 20 years and currently serve with a text processing company so I am intimately familiar with these technologies. The document is an OBVIOUS forgery. Note last night I cautioned it's probably not even worth the exercise because it's not part of the current agenda. However, now that this forgery has been proven so effectively, Dan Rather must be held accountable.
They are spinnig as fast as they can. In the wake of the revelation these documents are fake they think they can spin it into a negative for the White House.
If theses DOCs are proven to be a hoax......The election is OVER and Dan Rather's career ends on the low note he'll be remembered for and rightly so.

Were CBS Docs a Hoax? I was alerted to this on another thread, but follow this link. Apparently these docs were being discussed on a news group back in January. May have been purchased from a web site. Is this all a hoax gone wrong?

This is becoming the worst 48HRs of 60MINUTESIIs history. That's because we have 20/20 hindsight!
CBS' bomb turns blooper When one recognizes the opportunity for the White House to employ the full range of 'Net options -- chats, blogs, message boards, posted video on the White House web site, and so forth -- to get their unfiltered message out, it becomes very clear
the MSM as we know it is facing obscolescence. The early stages have already
arrived.
'KEY CHALLENGES TO NATIONAL GUARD DOCUMENTS ANSWERED'Goes on to cite the full CBS transcript. We've got to get it out there that this answers
nothing, that the superscripts available in 1973 did not match the superscripts seen in the "memos"; that Matley's expertise is as a handwriting analyst and he has no place analyzing the documents from a typing/font perspective, and so on... We made the truth come to light here with this story, now let's not let CBS and Rather cover it up!
Can they really get away with this??
History establishes that yes, they can get away with it. They've done so many times. The real question is "Can they STILL get away with this?"
Rush is reporting that the fake docs came from the DNC and Kerry campaign (live thread) "This place continually amazes me. You could ask a question on any topic, from medieval history to classical music to nuclear physics, and there will be be (at least) several articulate answers."
True, but there will also be several posts saying, "This is series," or "This is Hugh," or "All your [fill in the blank] belong to us."
Kerry: "All Your Forgery Are Belong To Us"
After the 2002 election, I wrote, ''Remind me never to complain about 'liberal media bias' again. Right now, liberal media bias is conspiring to assist the Democrats to sleepwalk over the cliff.''
The media and the Democrats sustain each other's make-believe land. Dan Rather tells his staff, ''Kerry's told me there's nothing to this Swiftvet thing.'' Kerry tells his, ''Rather's assured me this Swiftvet story's going nowhere.''
RATHER 'FORGES' AHEAD Mary Mapes, Rather's 60 Minutes producer, broke the Abu Grabib prison story.... I would like to know more about Mary Mapes. That CBS guy sure made a point of what a dedicated, honest producer she is, and how she vets everything multiple times.

Last night, my wife and I had dinner with some friends, one of whom, is a "hate Bush" liberal. I told her about the fake memos, and she became very defensive, even though it was the first time that she heard about the scandal.
"They're totally faked," I said.
"No, they're not."
I presented some of the evidence that people have gathered and posted on this site. She still insisted that the memos were real, even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. The bottom line was that she hates Bush with a white-hot passion, and her hatred therefore makes the memos genuine.
Mmmkay. Needless to say, it was an interesting and illuminating conversation.

Fear and Loathing in Manhattan - What motivates the Angry Left? Revenge I have to disagree.
It's about their fear of seeing more of their liberal agenda dismantled. They want someone who will put nuts in the Supreme Court, supports things like the Kyoto Treaty, not tamper with abortion, supports homosexuality, supports gun restrictions, supports higher taxes, supports the UN, and so on.
That's why they're always calling the President "dangerous".
Buckle Your Seatbelts The Ride Is About To Get Rough The Anti-American liberals are out to destroy President Bush and his family at ALL COSTS. I know this will just cause people to see how desperate the libs have become, but it also brings out more hate the left... the lefties are already planning on inpeachment after the election. They will stop at nothing and they want to destroy our country.
On the other hand, Kerry has made Vietnam a centerpiece of his. Enough said.
Doesn't measure up to back-stabbing the military with falsehoods in front of Congress...
So this is Kerry's new "take-the-gloves-off" strategy? I believe we are seeing "meltdown" here, big time.

The New Media Manifesto Now, with the internet, it was only a couple of hours before their assertions were being blown out of the water.
I agree, the internet has really arrived and changed the press and politics for the better. After I watched the the hack jobs the networks did on Goldwater and Reagan, it's a hopeful sign that a lie born in an agenda can be caught so quick, and be more embarrassing to the reporter than the target. Times are a changing, indeed.
We do abslutely nothing whatsoever except keep it on the front burner. The longer Rather has to keep talking about this the longer we have Veterans issues right out there. Everyone has figured out these docs are forgeries, but we love hearing old danny boy deny it.
It would also seem the old media's new standard includes to disparage all internet obtained information.
CBS, like the DNC, is fighting for nothing less than survival.
