UN getting sexy in new TV series
Wed Sep 8, 3:41 PM ET
UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - Move over, "Sex in the City." Miramax Television has signed on to develop a television series based on "Emergency Sex and Other Desperate Measures," a tell-all memoir by three staffers who worked on UN peacekeeping missions in the 1990s.
The book stoked controversy at the normally staid world body when it was published in June against the wishes of senior UN officials who feared it sullied the image of the United Nations (news - web sites).
The authors -- UN staffers Andrew Thomson and Heidi Postlewait, and former employee Kenneth Cain -- painted a picture of troubled UN peace operations in Cambodia, Haiti and Somalia.
The book, written in alternating chapters by the trio, details ineptitude, corruption and fast-living moments of sex, drinking and drug-taking.
They told reporters on Wednesday that Thomson and Postlewait were officially reprimanded by the world body and remain at risk of being sacked, and pointed the blame at UN Secretary General Kofi Annan (news - web sites).
"It's inconceivably stupid, in my opinion, to try to block publication," said Cain. "Mr Annan was involved."
Under UN rules, staff are not allowed to write about their work without approval. The authors say the attempt to silence them only generated more attention and sales.
In a press release, Miramax said the series would be "loosely based" on their book.
"Their own personal journeys give us a coming-of-age story that is also a story of the age we live in, at its best and worst," the company said.
