"Holy Moly! I decided to take your (FReeper aft_lizard's) suggestion and looked back at John Kerry's DD214s, also from 1972.
Not only were multiple machines used, but proportional fonts as well.
Check it out (in .PDF & from johnkerry.com)
Lines 1-10 are in standard evenly spaced fonts
Lines 11 and 12 are in proportional fonts.
The form then goes back to even fonts for a while, and then the bottom section is all in proportional fonts again.
Maybe I'm off base here, but something is wrong with the use of this type of font on Kerry's DD214s from 1972.
And the OFFICAL DOCUMENTS watermark is such a nice touch..."

This just keeps getting better ping. Take a VERY CLOSE look at the font sizes and the DD 214 looks like it may be fake.

Looks like it could be from an IBM Selectric. It could be from the same "special IBM Selectric that typed the Killian memos. 8^)

"This would require a pretty fancy machine and a high level of skill. But since it may have been for the creation of a master form, it is certainly possible that they gave the job to their best typist who used special care." This theory sounds very unlikely. I doubt that a single Office within the military would have to create their own template for an Official Form, for two reasons. (a). The government printing office would be the proper place to alter and update official forms. (b). It would probably be illegal for anyone to alter an Official Form just to make it easier for some clerk to fill it out.

Drudge has the 60 minutes memogate on his web site now.

Yup. That's your OFFICIAL discharge document, it documents everything from medals to time served, etc.

Ok, one possibility. I was assigned to Fort Riley Kansas on my return from Vietnam and spent three months processing GI's for bad discharges. At the time we would type out the DD-214s on electric or manual typewriters and because they were legal documents we could not erase or use white out. Admin had a very early type of computer that we used to type all the typically common information so as to reduce the odds of making a typo. The documents looked very similar to this one. What does strike me as odd is the reference to a Silver Star with V. Silver stars are only for valor, so stating it comes with a V is redundant. So whoever typed this had little experience with decorations, or, who knows.

What you guys need is a run of the mill Personnel man (PN) from the late 60's to have a look at this. Those guys used to type these things all the time. They can tell you if it was common practice to use different typewriters with different fonts.
One thing for sure is they did not use computers.
I was a Corpsman but would help out the YN's when we were without a PN at our Reserve Center. I have typed up these forms myself. I do not recall even needing to use a different typewriter and if I remember correctly it required a specific font. I suspect something underhanded.

What I'd like to know .. what are the questions being ask in those sections in which the type style was changed.
If they had to do with Kerry's character in any way .. that could be a major clue as to why they needed to be changed.
Another FReeper has said that Kerry has already signed an SF180 and received his documents - because some of the documents Kerry posted on his website were only obtainable through signing an SF180.
If that's true, and Kerry already has all his documents, then there is stuff on or in the documents which he doesn't want released .. UNLESS Kerry's able to change the wording on some of the documents.
At this point, I wouldn't put anything past these democrats. They truly are a "crooked, lying bunch".

I have a question, how come he is out of Local Draft Board #54 in Newberryport, a rather Skivey town at the time, and his home addy is in Groton, a goodly distance away.
