Ok, let's all agree the documents are real and then discuss them. The whole matter evolves around Bush's desire to help his dad and to find out how to resolve the conflict with his duty. We can see that he wished to do both, inquired as to how to do it and eventually did it. Nothing sneaky or wrong with what he did.

Title this: Duty to God, my Country and my Father.

Let's keep talking about the era. The Bush people won't mind a bit.

FAA regs prohibit flying on an expired medical certificate. I assume the same holds true for military pilots. IF his medical had expired, suspension from flight status would be automatic.

I believe someone else has confirmed what you're saying. It was put in memo form to substantiate it. I gather that these are not official records but personal file records. Why do they still exist? I'm betting others don't. And if everyones do exist, there must be LOTSA MEMOS on Kerry.

Didn't the Airforce have Official Stationary? or at least watermarked stationary?

Throw a little red meat out, a Peroutka blowfly is soon to wing in.

1960s Manual and electric front strike typewriters remained the office standard until the IBM Selectric with its golf-ball type-element was introduced in 1961. The Selectric's carriage was stationary while the type-element moved back and forth across the page. As was true of earlier single-element typewriters, the type-element on the Selectric could be changed to permit writing in different fonts and languages. Nice try though

The IBM Selectric could do those things & was the first choice by professional typists of that day.

How would the White House be in a position to know if these memos are true or not? There are millions of documents relating to Vietnam era soldiers-Bush isn't going to know about these memos because they were not in his file. He has no way of knowing if they are correct or not. It could be this guy didn't like Bush tried to 'get' him-this happens a lot in the service (navy brat). Then, another officer who likes whoever the former guy is out to get...puts in his two sense. The highest ranking/most politically powerful Officer wins...but plenty of memos are written. I have a friend (female helicopter pilot) who was attacked by her new CO...a general went to bat for her and ultimately prevailed...but you can be bet there are some really ugly memos written by her CO out there-35 years from now the context will not be known.

And if you're going to let your license lapse, there's no reason to bother with the physical.

And pilots were returning from Vietnam at that time, they had combat experience and would be better qualified to do the job than President Bush at that time.

My thoughts were quite a bit different than most of the ones expressed here.

I saw the headline, then read the article, and found the headline to be extremely misleading.

The headline and first sentence implies that Bush was suspended for failing somehow. The article then goes on to show that he didn't want to fly, that he wanted to be transferred to a non-flying position in Alabama, and that he wanted to campaign for his dad.

I didn't think of "forgery" or anything like that. It looks to me that he fulfilled the minimum requirements of his duties so that he could campaign for his dad. Nothing to brag about, but no scandal there. He was honorably discharged. I don't see what the big deal is and I don't think most of America will either. I think this is a non-issue.

This is why I said Bush should have denounced the SBV ads, let them continue on their own. He'd be in the clear on all this.

No -he would not be in the clear...the Dems would have annouced that Bush had admitted collusion...just as they spun the resignations of Ginsberg and others. Don't you understand. no matter what the President does or says...the Dems are coming after him. We can hope that Americans have too much sense to believe this nonsense.
