F. Scott Fitzgerald's Jay Gatsby is the fictional hero of the Great American novel. He is the archetypal American self-creator. He was born Jay Gatz but repudiated his origins and background while inventing a grand new persona. He was the perfect hero for a country born by casting off its European origins and creating a new world wherein success was determined, not by background, but by individual talent.
Fitzgerald's tale is, however, a cautionary one, because he warns against the inescapability of the past, the dangers of trying too hard to escape from history. In the novel, Gatsby comes to grief because he rejects not only his personal parental past, but also the moral and ethical constraints handed down from one generation to the next. His romantic dream of himself finally collides with reality. As Nick Carraway said of him: "No -- Gatsby turned out all right at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men."
John Kerry is his own fictional creation, a Gatsby minus the charm......

JOHN F. KERRY: FRANKENSTEIN MINUS THE SCAR
Kerry is just another con artist.
John Kerry: Captain Ahab minus the pegleg.
John Kerry - a bolted down toilet seat looking for a lift.
Mark Steyn, a brillent ex Canadian news writer who now lives in New England wrote this morning, "Kerry is a thin skinned whiney vanity candidate who persists in deluding himself that Bush's advantage is down to smears, lies and mean attacks." It is not...it is about the issues. For an inarticulate man Bush more effective than "Senator Nuancy Boy" as Stey puts it. Kerry is totally out of touch with reality. He says Bush is SCARY.."Scary is to pitch at random being held hostage in a school gym and the kid next to you is parched. He asks for water and the terrorist holding him at bay, stabs him in the belly in front of your eyes. Scary cannot encompass that situation and the mainstream press's vague distast for Bush without losing all meaning." This, from Mark Steyn. I believe he he has hit on the problem every parent will have when they go into the voting booth in November asking themselves.."could that be my kid??"
well, Kerry is running a headless campaign which shows him to be both sleepy and hollow. A legend in his own mind. If he could only find it.
Interesting the reference to F Scott Fitz. Fitz is Kerry's heros middle name.
Also F Scott is a lot like kerry, lots of words, little content. I prefer Hemmingway.
Kerry has always been fixated on the green light at the end of the pier. He is never going to get there.
