THE full horror of the Russian school atrocity began to emerge yesterday as traumatised children told horrific tales of stabbed babies and brutal rapes.

It has also emerged that scores of the 323 who died - including many children - had been shot in the back.

While despairing soldiers and rescue workers moved among the growing pile of body bags, it was revealed that an 18-month-old baby had been repeatedly stabbed by a black-clad terrorist who had run out of ammunition.

Other survivors told how screaming teenage girls were dragged into rooms adjoining the gymnasium where they were being held and raped by their Chechen captors who chillingly made a video film of their appalling exploits

They said children were forced to drink their own urine and eat the petals off the flowers they had brought their teachers after nearly three days without food or water in the stifling hot gym.

Their stories came as Russian officials warned that the final death toll of the siege of Middle School No 1 at Beslan in North Ossetia - in which up to 1,200 people were held captive - was likely to be more than 400.

The official toll yesterday stood at 323 which included 156 children, 10 Russian soldiers and two emergency service workers - 35 of the hostage-takers were also killed. Last night 434 people were being treated in hospital with 247 children and 85 adults in a critical condition.

A Russian official said six seriously injured children had been taken to Moscow for treatment.

"One of them is a child, just 18 months old, with many knife wounds," he said.

I'm trying to keep a chronicle for my children when they are older so that when the history is revised in some way to minimize this threat, they can still understand what went on and who the true enemy was.

Who knows, but in the end, just the fact they randomly or deliberately executed children is enough to know they all deserve a long slow death. Any additional brutalities they committed is worth reporting, but doesn't change what the response needs to be.

No big surprise because in the 90's when the chechens were kidnapping and mutilating thousands, many young children, you heard not one peep here. I only learned about it all while in Russia. Even AMERICANS like Herbert Gregg, who were held and tortured, were not mentioned here. The US media also passed on the 3 Brits/New Zealanders who had their heads cut off. Had to read BBC to get that story.

The sad "silver lining" here is that Americans will sit up and take notice...

Where are these terrorists coming from if not from Chechnya?

They are coming from Chechnya and from Arab Sunni countries (primarily Wahabis). Chechens living outside of Chechnya do not cause much problems (beside part of them involvement in organized crime).

Russians under Yeltsin made a horrible mistake by withdrawing the troops and police from Chechnya in 1990s. It allowed Wahabis to set their base and to channel disorganized separatist, tribal or criminal activities into universal mission.

At least Robert Cottrell thinks that Kerry will help to unfreeze conflicts on Russia borders (as Clinton did to Serbia).

Our Media is as bad as it gets. Exposure of this abomination will make Bush's victory certain and overwhelming. It will not be covered as long as there is ANY miserable excuse not to publicize it: storms, murders, rapes, someone lost their keys, anything.

President Bush should fly to Russia for a brief solidarity visit. If he does it media will not be able to hide it from the public and Bush will win elections by the landslide.
