The bloody siege of a Russian school by Chechen rebels brought widespread condemnation and soul-searching in the Islamic world yesterday.Arab newspapers and television broadcasts were full of dramatic photographs of the children killed and injured in the siege by Islamic rebels demanding Chechen independence from Russia. Commentators and clerics put a harsh spotlight on those who kill and maim in Islam's name.
"What is the guilt of those children? Why should they be responsible for your conflict with the government?" Egypt's top Muslim cleric, Grand Sheik Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, asked during a sermon in Banha, 30 miles north of Cairo.
"You are taking Islam as a cover and it is a deceptive cover. Those who carry out the kidnappings are criminals, not Muslims," said Tantawi, according to Egypt's Middle East News agency.
Yesterday's headline over the daily column by Abdulrahman Al-Rashed in the pan-Arab Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper was "The Painful Truth: All the World Terrorists Are Muslims!"
The column by Al-Rashed, general manager of Al-Arabiya television, listed recent attacks by Islamic extremist groups in Russia, Iraq, Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, many influenced by Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.
"Our terrorist sons are an end product of our corrupted culture," said the columnist, noting that "most perpetrators of suicide operations in buses, schools and residential buildings around the world for the past 10 years have been Muslims."
Al-Rashed called on Muslims to "admit the scandalous facts" instead of rationalizing them.
The Chechen hostage-takers sullied Islam's image, wrote the Egyptian Islamist Ahmed Bahgat in his column in Egypt's leading pro-government newspaper, Al-Ahram.
"If all the enemies of Islam united together and decided to harm it ... they wouldn't have ruined and harmed its image as much as the sons of Islam have done by their stupidity, miscalculations and misunderstanding of the nature of this age," Bahgat wrote.

LOL!!! Great picture! Somehow I don't see McVeigh and Nichols buddying up with diaper heads, but then Mr. Gamma Ray may have a point.
And some believe McVeigh etc were not alone, you know. What about that nationwide search for the John Doe?
And they help the palistinians and have received aid from the libyans. The IRA are very much connected to islamo terrorists (redundant phrase, I know).
How droll... the pic is mildly amusing, too...
However, your response, whatever emotional gratification it may have afforded you, has absolutely nothing to do with the facts and the reality of the terrorist threats facing this country from Islamofascist fanatics. The context of your initial dismissive comment that McVeigh and Nichols weren't Muslim demonstrated your basic lack of knowledge of how the tentacles of that threat extend much deeper into our homeland and further back in time than has been officially acknowledged.
I simply offered a source cite for information, along with an explicit recommendation to check it out and an implicit assumption that you would evaluate the evidence and arguments presented and form your own conclusions. That approach would require a certain amount of work on your part, however, and you apparently don't consider it worthwhile. That's perfectly alright - you're free to choose between being informed and being uninformed.
As for me and my family, I believe the threat from Islamic terrorists is sufficiently grave that I owe it to myself and to those for whom I am responsible to learn as much as possible about it, to investigate all informational leads and clues, and to leave no stone unturned in the search for the knowledge and the tools to combat it. Obviously, not every avenue of investigation will pan out, but to pre-judge and dismiss something out of hand without properly investigating it could prove disastrous.
I wish you well, and hope that you and your family will remain safe through the days yet to come.
"When the full stories of these two incidents (1993 WTC Center bombing and 1995 Oklahoma City bombing) are finally told, those who permitted the investigations to stop short will owe big explanations to these two brave women (Middle East expert Laurie Mylroie and journalist Jayna Davis). And the nation will owe them a debt of gratitude." - Former CIA Director James Woolsey, Wall Street Journal, September 5, 2002
Big da__ed surprise, A$$holerahman Al-Raghead! You have been reading calls for this all along in your filthy Koran! We are not buying your Trojan Horse lies!
Go to he!!, you filthy, lowlife Muslirat sack of $hit!
Yes, I think Tim McVeigh befriended some of those Radical Muslim Iraquis during the Gulf War.
Add to your list:
lib = hypocrite (I've never known one that wasn't).
Okay, no offense but how many children are killed in the inner city every day, yet when somebody opened fire on a children's jewish community center here in LA a couple of years ago, we heard about incessantly, including a year later when the anniversary was marked.
The difference between criminal violence in the inner cities and deliberate targeting of children for political reasons is something that as an adult you should know the difference. I suggest you take a course in humanity.
You can question my ability to discern between criminal violence which by the way is a targeting ALSO and deliberate targeting of Jewish children, but don't question my HUMANITY. Inner city kids are just as HUMAN as targeted Jews, Whites, Blacks, etc. May be you need to take a course in EQUALITY. BTW, I'm half Jewish.
As I told you, there is a difference between criminal violence by thugs in the inner city who kill for drug related and gang turf related reasons and terrorists who deliberatly target kids and other inocent civilians on purpose.
Most inner city violence deaths are not of little kids but of teen agers and people in their early 20s involved in gangs. A small percentage are killed from drive by shootings. No I do not think they are not worth reporting. But they could stop only if the criminal behavior was not condoned by the inner city culture. Many of the gangbangers are the kids of former gangbangers or gengbangers in jail. Its a culture of crime that has nothing to do with evil bad white America. Inner city gangs are like white motorcycle gangs with out the bikes. Many non white Americans have good and productive lives but the gangbangers choose to live that way, just like mafia guys do as well. It is a choice. Its why people don't cover it as much because it could stop of those involved in it would stop killing each other.
Trust me, if inner city gang bangers took over a school of non-white kids and did what the muslim terrorists did in Beslan, it would be all over TV. Reporters are story vultures...if there is blood its on TV.
The press has an aversion to covering Israeli deaths because there is a concencus among them that Israel deserves being bombed by the palestinians in a sick relativistic view of the world where terrorism is justified in some situations in their sick minds. I think ALL terrorism is wrong no matter what the cause. Murder is murder...period. 200,000 Greek cypriots were thrown out of their homes in Cyprus by Turkey's Army, but they never once resorted to blowing up kids, women or old people. If one were to follow the Palestinian rational, Greek Cypriots have the same right. If they ever did, I would be against that as well and I'm Greek. If Israel was deliberatly targeting kids or sending suicide bombers in to Gaza, I would be against that as well.
By the way, I'm Christian. I view this as an issue of right and wrong. But comparing criminal deaths to terrorism is a different issue even if the result is the same. Criminals have a choice. People in Israel taking a bus to work or to grandma's house is not a crime. Joining a gang, selling drugs and going on drive by shooting runs is.
OK, I get your point.
They were working with Muslims.
I found it interesting that in an interview of Queen Rania of Jordan she said every night she reads the Koran to her kids before tucking them in. Just like they were a normal God fearing people. I wanted to puke.
Thanks for the information.
