RICHMOND, Va. (Aug. 31) - Republicans selected state Del. Thelma Drake Tuesday to replace U.S. Rep. Edward L. Schrock on the November ballot, a day after he dropped out of the race amid claims that he is gay.
The Republican Committee for Schrock's district gathered Tuesday to hastily vote for a nominee who could take on Democrat lawyer David B. Ashe in the Nov. 2 election. Drake, a real estate agent, is a reliable member of the state House's conservative GOP majority.
Schrock, 63, a married retired Navy captain who was popular among conservatives, cited unspecified ''allegations'' for his surprise decision Monday
A Web log recently published claims that he solicited sex with another man on a gay phone dating service.
Schrock, an outspoken foe of gays in the military and supporter of a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages, did not address the allegation in a five-paragraph statement announcing his decision Monday. He said he would not comment further.
The GOP controls eight of the state's 11 U.S. House seats, and Schrock's decision to withdraw two months before the election threatens to narrow that margin
I think the guy who resigned is the hypocrite.
From the discussion the other day, I think Del. Thelma Drake was the best choice. She's conservative, well known in the district, knows the issues that affect the district's residents, will certainly defeat that pro-abortion Ashe fellow who is running for the Democrats, and will give us yet another pro-life woman in Congress. Bob McDonnell can still run for AG in preparation for a later run for the U.S. Senate or the governorship.
Any word on whether Democrat Congressmen Rick Boucher of the 9th CD or Bobby Scott of the 3rd CD will be outed as well? Or do these gay activists only ruin the lives of Republicans? Tell you what, if voters in the 9th CD (where Bush got over 54% in 2000) knew that Boucher is gay (as the middle-aged lifelong bachelor is alleged to be), ex-NASCAR official Kevin Triplett would almost certainly win the seat for the GOP, even if Boucher quit and was replaced with a strong candidate. And even in the heavily Democrat, black-majority 3rd CD, I don't think that Bobby Scott could be reelected if he was outed as gay; we are running our best candidate there ever, former Del. Winsome Sears, a black conservative woman who has won tough elections before, and if Sears can get 35% of the black vote she would win the election.
I do...and he isn't gay.
Without giving too many details, I've worked on a challenger race against Boucher (several years back). We had a pastor tell us that Boucher propositioned one of his members.
"Could" be just a rumor. "Could have been" a set up.
Boucher will hold that district because he does take care of his constituents. And because he's got the coal unions in his back pocket.
I've not heard other rumors about Bobby Scott...
Why did he resign?
He hasn't talked with anyone about this yet. Scrock comes on WNIS 790 every Thursday at 7:30am, if you are in the listening area, we may have an answer. Schrock was already thinking about retiring several weeks ago.
There is a recording on audiotape. He hasn't tried to deny it. Apparently people knew about this when he ran for Congress in 2000. All signs point to the story being true and Schrock removing himself from public life with his dignity intact.
What I don't understand is, he talked negatively against gay marriage, and the alternate lifestyle.
Meeting the guy, and seeing his family relationship...you would have never known, or thought that there was any tendencies.
What people knew?
Were you here in VA in 2000 during the campaign and election? Just because he resigned, doesn't mean it's true. If an allegation came out on me, it is alledged, I would bow out to get out of the public light to keep my family from being exploited.
Notice Schrock didn't immediatly remove himself, he is in for the rest of the term.

1. The party knew and this is true
2. It's caucous time and this is a small matter and will deal with it latter.
3. Bush is cleaning House....get it?
I know Ed Shrock [for years] and if someone had played me that tape and asked "who is it?" I would never have guessed Shrock.
Maybe it will turn out to be him, but you never could have proved it was him by that tape. It does not sould like him at all.
I suppose Schrock is going to hide his family from the media, a good thing, and try to come up with a plan to sue who ever is trying to frame him....I think Ashe is behind it.
If you were in the service, you knew who was and wasn't..the don't ask don't tell didn't work, because habitual manerisms would root you out. Words, body language and associations in the public would tell your life style.
Schrock, a retired O-6, being in service with men over 26 years, you'd think SOMEone would have an inkling...He ran for office in 2000 and no one came forward...
1. Schrock is not gay. How do I know this? Because no one is 'gay'. People either practice homosexual behavior or they do not. Homosexuality is a behavior not a characteristic. There is however a mental disease called Same-sex Attraction Disorder (SAD). SAD is 100% curable.
2. It's been shown that sexual addiction can lead from one perversion into the next when the first perversion loses it's 'high'. That is, someone can start with mild pornography and then progress into other things that the person never would have even considered. Especially if his background includes unhealed wounds that leave one vulnberable to SAD. An estranged friend of mine went down that road. Happily married with children, then he got sucked into on-line pornography and the next thing you knew he was claiming to be gay.
So it's possible that Rep Schrock got tangled up in a sexual addiction and didn't know how to get help without ruining his reputation. Now he has the opening to get help
