Talk about a doubly incongruous image - John Kerry [related, bio] in Nashville, addressing the convention of the American Legion.
But that's where he's going today, and that's what he'll be doing.
As for the Legionnaires, he's got no use for them, none whatsoever.
Here are his own words, taken directly from his own 1971 book, ``The New Soldier'':
``We will not readily join the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars - in fact, we will find it hard to join anything at all . . .'' Except maybe the Somerset Club.
``We will not uphold traditions which decorously memorialize that which was base and grim,'' he wrote.
The nice thing about this epilogue is that he wrote it. At the end of it are his initials, ``J.K.'' He can't blame this on somebody else, the way he does with everything else that comes back to bite him.
How freaked out is Kerry by this whole Vietnam issue? He's barely speaking to reporters, even bow-tied ones.
``We were sent to Vietnam to kill communism,'' Sen. Kerry wrote. ``But we found instead that we were killing women and children.''
Imagine if George Bush had written this, for publication, and then flown off to Nashville to address the baby-killers. Yet John Kerry has already spoken to the VFW, and today it's the American Legion, and the trust-funded bedwetters of the lamestream media won't say boo.
``We will not quickly join those who march on Veterans Day waving small flags, calling to memory those thousands who died for the `greater glory of the United States.' ''
Today, though, he'll do just that. He'll even give them his FleetCenter salute.
And so the ``New Soldier,'' as he calls himself, rubs elbows with the American Legion today. It's quite a sacrifice, having to leave his wife's $9 million mansion on Nantucket. He'll miss out on dinner at the Chanticleer Inn, another of those moderately priced bistros that dot John Kerry's America.
Maybe Lovey can get him some takeout - something simple and C-ration-like. How about the Chanticleer's trademark dish: Homard Roti Injecte au Beurre de Champagne, which is ``live lobster roasted whole injected while cooking with a champagne butter.''
The price is steep - $45 - but not nearly as steep as buying a copy of ``The New Soldier'' on eBay. Yesterday, a first edition was going for $410.
Yes, but to about 50 million of America's great unwashed, he is their candidate, running under the ABB (Anybody But Bush) line. It is positively scary to think of what would happen if the dems actually nominated somebody worthy of the office. I suppose if they were worthy of the office, they wouldn't be democrats. But still--Kerry, with all of his baggage, no accomplishments to speak of, the most liberal Senator, from the most liberal state, and, up until a few days ago, he was ahead of George W. Bush in all the polls. The power of the lamesteam media is still very formidable. A truly impartial press reporting the facts to the sheeple would have Bush ahead 90-10.
Not if you believe their ratings and circulation figs :)
The Old Media id dead. Long live the New Media! :)
It'd be the most disingenuous thing he could do. How sincere is an apology when it's given inorder to get something? (I'm really, really sorry, Mom.....now can I go to the movies?)
How do we explain Kerry's being favored by 50% of the voters? Or even 40%?
Even Dukakis and Mondale had sizable leads during the summer. We all remember where thosed two ended up, don't we?
I wonder how the media will report Senator Kerry's visit today?
IMHO ... Democrats will have learned one thing from this campaign. They must somehow gain control of all media outlets, allowing only their propaganda to be heard.
All conservative radio must be silenced. All opposing TV networks removed from the air. Conservative bloggers banned from the internet. And last, but not least, all supporters of, and the Swifties themselves, must be interred in indoctrination camps, until they get their minds right ... Luke!
I have no doubt that Bush will prevail. I just can't understand how a putz like Kerry can even be competetive. It's got to be the media, even weakened as they are by the likes of us.
But not the most disingenuous thing he's ever done.
That's the ticket... What do they want to hear? Give it to them but make sure you leave yourself an out... pretty much the way Kerry has been throughout his political career and until now no one has overtly challenged him on it.
Good analysis. But kinda scary. It means we have to convince more than 5/6 of the remaining 60% to vote Republican. Not much margin for error.
OK, I was 16 in '84 and there was no internet. I just remember wanting Reagan to win and that his victory was in doubt for a while.
It does make you wonder how Kerry can pull off this appearance. I don't think his campaign can 'screen' the audience. I'll bet they 'discourage' MSM from being there.
What could he possibly say????
Wonder who Carr's referring to.
I doubt it's George Will. Tucker Carlson?

Howie refers to reporters and editors at the Boston Globe as the "bow-tied bumkissers of Morrissey Boulevard."
