SPOTTER REPORTS INDICATE 10 TO 14 INCHES OF RAIN HAVE OCCURRED FROM THE CITY OF RICHMOND INTO PORTIONS OF KING WILLIAM COUNTY...WITH WIDESPREAD AMOUNTS IN THE 4 TO 8 INCH RANGE FROM CHESTERFIELD AND CHARLES CITY COUNTIES...NORTHWARD INTO CAROLINE AND KING AND QUEEN COUNTIES. ADDITIONAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 1 TO 3 INCHES! ARE POSSIBLE IN THE WARNED AREA.
Appreciate it.
I'm not concerned with wind associated with the upgrading to TS status........my concern is with more rain. We just can't handle the type of rain Richmond got today. In fact we can't handle much more rain of any kind right now. And the radars I'm looking at are showing rain all night.
Prayers for folks in the Richmond area, it sure doesn't look like it's over yet for those folks.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Gov. Mark R. Warner declared a state of emergency Monday night after the remnants of Tropical Storm Gaston battered central Virginia with torrential rain, causing heavy flooding that sent cars floating down streets and trapped people in buildings. The declaration made state resources available and put the Virginia National Guard on standby for possible duty.
Prayers being offered for everyone living there.
Been trying to reach daughters caught in tornadoes and floods of Hurricane Gaston in Richmond VA... Both are safe, but one was caught in her car in deep water and barely managed to get out. It took her 2.5 hours to go 10 miles (normal driving) to a friend's house by back roads and in a big circle. She couldn't get home. Other daughter safe at home. No phones, no power, etc. Cell phones weren't working for a long time...they finally got through to me. Whew! I was a worried Mom, that's for sure.
Hermitage High School Open in Henrico County is now open as a shelter.
If people need a place to come or are looking for someone then come there bring medication and bedding.
NO PETS are allowed.
People with utilities questions and others should call 501-7900 (non-emergency)
For structural issues call 501-7408 or 501-4360
One daughter on Monument...got caught earlier Shockoe Bottom area and managed to get home. Other daughter was in orientation for a job and couldn't get back to VCU, almost swept away in water (in her car), made it hours later in a round about way to a friend's house. This friend is really a friend of her roommate's mom, and works for State Police. She found her a way to get there. Roads are horrible...cell phones aren't even working most of the time. So both are safe for now. Older daughter now has intermittent power (lives on Monument) but said there were people trapped in a building that collapsed about 5 blocks away.
Anyone heard from Mudboy Slim? He lives in that area, I think.

OMG you poor thing I am so glad you found out they are both safe! Prayers up for the folks in Richmond!
Any idea which building that was that fell...
Hell, upstate NY weather ain't looking so bad after all.......
Thanks for the ping, I have been following the situation through some other sources. Sounds quite bad. People often forget that the number one killer from tropical systems is flooding. In a normal year, the smaller storms tend to make the most news with their prolific rains. We saw that tonight in RIC. Gaston back to TS strength now as Hermine passes just to my east. I'll be glad to see this busy August end. Hopefully the peak of the season coming up doesn't throw us too many more.
I won't even mention Frances, she will get many threads of her own in the coming days.
Thank the Lord they are both safe.
That was with a rainfall of only two inches over an hour. I can't even imagine what 14 inches will do. I hope that everyone here realizes how serious this situation is. I can't believe that it's not on the news.
Blessings for your family.
Frances is going to be one mean machine.
Could be the icing on the cake for this tropical season.
Hopefully Florida won't see a second strike...from a major hurricane this year.
Looks bad

Virginia Gov. Mark Warner declared a state of emergency due to flooding in central Virginia, making state resources available and putting the Virginia National Guard on standby. "It looks like rapids outside our building," said Nick Baughan, who was stranded with about 20 other people on the second floor of the Bottoms Up pizza restaurant in Richmond.
"All of our cars have floated away."
The first floor was under more than three metres of water, Baughan said.
About 28 centimetres of rain fell in Richmond, causing cars to float down flooded streets and ram into the restaurant and other buildings in the Shockoe Bottom district, a popular entertainment area.
"We had a side shed attached to the building. It's not attached anymore," Baughan said.
Fourteen rescues of people stranded in buildings or cars were pending Monday night, police spokeswoman Cynthia Price said. A stretch of Interstate 95 was closed and many streets were impassable, creating traffic jams that lasted from rush hour until well into the night.
