How to Get Out of Vietnam in 22 days!
http://www.johnkerry.com ^ | Aug 27, 2004 | Aaron In Carolina

The actual time window for Kerry to receive 5 medals was 22 days, not the 4 month timeframe that everyone uses. Once you realize that the 1st Purple Heart was not submitted and approved until after the 2nd Purple Heart wound, that drastically narrows the awards window to 22 days. My theory, once I realized that the timeline was 22 days instead of 4 months (Feb 20th - March 13th... 5 medals), is that he received the only real wound that he ever received on Feb. 20th (shrapnel in his thigh that he still carries to this day), and that he then resolved to get out of Vietnam as fast as he can because he feared for his life. So he re-submitted his petition for the 1st purple heart with a commander in a totally different Coastal Division who was not aware of his fraud in that instance (and he provided a document that indicated he had received a band-aid for the injury). He knew that he would receive a PH for the Feb. 20th shrapnel wound (probably a valid PH). All he needed was one more PH to get out. He began writing up all After Action reports to be in a position to quickly get the 3rd one, which he did within 22 days... an unheard of medal rate in any war in any century! The evidence is that he clearly "gamed the system" to get out, and his plan only took 22 days!

You got to give him credit - he knew what he was doing, and he did it.

Very good evaluation. I believe you've hit the nail right on the head.

Anybody else looking forward to the day when all Vietnam vets are too old to run for office? I can't wait. Of course, the "...back in Vietnam..." one-liners will probably morph into "...back in the Gulf..."

*Sigh*

You know, this isn't because a Vietnam Vet is running for POTUS. It's because this particular Vietnam vet is running for POTUS. Of all Vietnam Vets, Kerry is probably the worst imaginable one to run for president. Most any other Vietnam Vet could run for president without causing the controversy that this one has. Its because of the huge knife that this particular Vietnam vet planted into the backs of all the other Vietnam Vets, then asking for their support 35 years later that causes this controversy.

Excellent post! Also, factor in that he didn't apply for anything while Steve Gardner was on his boat, but as soon as they were on separate boats, wham, five medals in 22 days! Could Gardner have been on to his slick-ness and frightened Kerry off from putting in for any band-aid PHs?

He had some help with that...

Thomas Wright was one of John F. Kerry's fellow Swift boat officers in Vietnam. Since Wright outranked Kerry, he was Kerry's sometime boat group Officer-in-Charge, so Wright had occasion to observe Kerry’s behavior and attitudes, and the circumstances surrounding his early departure from the war zone. The intervening years have not dimmed his memories.

“I had a lot of trouble getting him to follow orders,” recalls Wright. “He had a different view of leadership and operations. Those of us with direct experience working with Kerry found him difficult and oriented towards his personal, rather than unit goals and objectives. I believed that overall responsibility rested squarely on the shoulders of the OIC or OTC in a free-fire zone. You had to be right (before opening fire). Kerry seemed to believe there were no rules in a free-fire zone and you were supposed to kill anyone. I didn’t see it that way.”

It got to a point where Wright told his divisional commander he no longer wanted Kerry in his boat group, so he was re-assigned to another one. “I had an idea of his actions but didn’t have to be responsible for him.” Then Wright and like-minded boat officers took matters into their own hands. “When he got his third Purple Heart, three of us told him to leave. We knew how the system worked and we didn’t want him in Coastal Division 11. Kerry didn’t manipulate the system, we did.”

Thanks. Is there anyway you can do this timeline in the classic left to right portrait formate with the earliest date on the left to the last date on the right?

Thanks.

See this group of Swift Boats patrolling together? They are NOT SERVING together!!! Only the ones on the SAME BOAT are serving together! Each group of personnel on each boat know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the personnel on the other boat, PERIOD !! If they say they do, they are Republican LIARS !! Unless the one talking is a DemocRAT. Then he is telling the truth, of course.

"I spent more time on John Kerry's boat than any other crewmember.

John Kerry hasn't been honest - he has been deceitful.

John Kerry claims that he spent Christmas, in 1968, in Cambodia.

And that is catagorically a lie. Not in December. Not in January.

We were never in Cambodia on a secret mission. Ever."

John Kerry's explanation:
"He (Hubbard) simply exaggarated his particular position.
But nobody knew it at the time. And those things happen."

We need the paperwork for Kerry's first Purple Hheart to see when it was submitted. You could very well be right, but there is no factual basis available to prove that he submitted a request for the first PH after he received the injury on Feb 20 for the second one. According to the released info, the first PH for the injury received on Dec 2, was approved on Feb 28th. The second PH was approved on March 5 for the injuries received on Feb 20.

Normally, you don't put a request in for a PH. It is awarded to you after treatment by a medical doctor. We don't have a casualty report for the first PH, so we don't know how the award was made and who approved it.

I am not discounting your thesis that the request for the first PH could have been submitted after Feb 20. We just don't have the paperwork to verify it.

Here's another question for the experts.

President Bush is said to have had 600 hours in the F-102.

How many hours did Kerry spend on the Swift Boat, on missions?
