Kerry says Special Forces Lt. Jim Rassmann fell out of boat
Congressional Record on January 28, 1998

Posted on 08/26/2004 6:14:10 PM PDT by vanburen

John Kerry placed in the Congressional Record on January 28, 1998 the eulogy he gave (apparently) at the funeral of a former swiftboat companion. He describes what could be an entirely different version of the Rassmann falling in the river/mine exploding story.

Were the chocolate chip cookies stowed on the starboard side of Swift boats?

Rassman, with a cookie in one hand and a machine gun in the other...

2 feet in the air? Could that propel a doggie into another boat?

That only happens in cartoons

'“I remember the day and the moment we last met; the lingering bond between us comes from the shared experience of our service,” Kerry said. “I told Jim what I tell the thousands of veterans I have met in Iowa: As president, I will never—ever—forget your service.” Kerry added. '

"I will never - ever- forget your service" .... {and I hope to hell they have forgotten mine....}

Put all of the versions together? Yes - that's for damn sure. It *has* to be done - it will prove the changing stories, and put things in a way that can't be denied.

And, it will keep us from all going crazy trying to remember what was what.

Thanks. Now that you mention it, I also remember the chocolate chip cookie jokes in regard to this event. What disgust me, is that both the NY Times and Washington Post have concluded that the SBVT have been dscredited. Yet, in the last couple days, it has only been Kerry who has made revisions to his stories...whether its X-mas in Cambodia, his first PH or the concession that it was he who may have left the scene while others stayed.

Heck tonight on H&C, Christopher Gregory...a former Kerry campaign director, denied that Kerry ever implicated himself in atrocites. He did this as Hannity held in his hand a transcript of his own admission. All these people are getting caught in lies...and yet the media insists that it is Kerry who is telling the truth.

The boat made a high speed to starbroad and the Green Beret keep going-- straight into the river!!!

If you look at the WP graphic that would have meant that Kerry had made a hard turn into the shore. The graphic shows Kerry's boat only making left turns.

" Rassmann and one other Special Forces soldier were the leaders of the indigenous troops aboard the Swift boats that day."

Rassmann told Michael Kranish ( page 105) that his job ferrying Chinese mercenaries in northern Vietnam was on hold, because the rainy season had ended and the marshes were dry.
He and his men " had free time on their hands, so he decided to head south and hook up with navy swift boat crews."
He met Kerry in a bar, they hung out for a month and the day of his rescue was their first " mission " together.
Kranish makes it sound as if Rassmann was just hanging out with Kerry.

You are correct sir! Since PCF 94 was on the right hand side of the river, A starboard (right)turn (high speed or not) would have smashed them directly into the river bank. Besides, Rassman was on the starboard side of the boat and a high speed starboard turn would have thrown him inboard, not overboard.

If you are on the right side of a river it's not a good idea to make a high speed right hand turn.

That was exactly my first reaction! This version of the story may offer a whole new insight into those "brave beaching" stories.

Kerry will try and explain his error like this...

"I was not at the helm, but I was facing behind us looking at PCF-3 as it foundered. When I said starboard, I meant to say that the helm turned the boat hard to my right, which was to the port... but personally from my perspective it was my starboard."

And I would have to respond that a skipper as incompetent as to keep track of the ship's starboard and port sides can't expect to keep track of the truth, let alone all the details that go with running a country.
