The Brit pilots who flew the old Fairey Swordfish (they called it the "stringbag") used a bolt head on the engine cowling as a sighting point for aiming their torpedoes. They lined up the enemy ship with the bolt head and then estimated the range and how much to lead the target. Not quite state of the art, even for 1940.
Against all enemies foreign and domestic.
