Political Wire got an advance look at the new Los Angeles Times poll showing President Bush "moving slightly" ahead of Sen. John Kerry "for the first time this year." Bush had the support of 49% of registered voters, compared to 46% for Kerry.
The newspaper's analysis indicates Kerry "has been nicked by attacks on his service in Vietnam."
The "small shift" from last month's poll "is within the poll's margin of error. But it fits with other findings in the Times Poll showing the electorate edging toward Bush over the past month on a broad range of measures, from support for his handling of Iraq to confidence in his leadership and honesty."
Independent voters split evenly, but Bush's "tentative new advantage" seems to be "his greater success at onsolidating his base. While just 3% of voters who call themselves Republicans say they will vote for Kerry, Bush is drawing 15% just over one-seventh of all Democrats, and fully one-fifth 20% of Democrats who consider themselves moderate or conservative, the poll found."
Spelling Alert.
You must mean Hugh and Series. This is Free Republic after all and we take things seriesly especially when they are hugh. I think the FR spellchecker should be adjusted to catch the illegal use of the word HUGE. Probably won't happen.
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!
Good one.
52% approval
Yes!
I wouldn't get too hyped up yet.
If and when the MSM starts to seriously delve into the SBV's charges, then you'll know Kerry is doomed. The credibility of the MSM (whatever little there is left) will be at stake, so rather than stay aboard a sinking ship, the MSM will bail out--the excuse being that they found truth in the SBV's charges.
Hasn't happened yet. Won't hold my breath.
Does anyone have figures for the voting habits of Dims vs GOP?
The newspaper's analysis indicates Kerry "has been nicked by attacks on his service in Vietnam."
Awwwww Put some bacitracin on it,slap on a bandaid and award him a medal!..He is wounded by these revelations.
This means that GW actually holds a 52% to 43% lead among "likely voters", which, in the absence of media bias, equates to a 62% to 33% blowout.
And going into the convention. YAHOO....
I agree. But the folks who haven't figured it out are Kerry, his team of socialist bootlickers and the enablers in the media. If Kerry had kept his stupid, arrogant mouth shut, shrugged his shoulders with a "so what" - things might be different.
He's showing his ass in this episode, and that is what the voters are starting to see.
A "man" that has no idea how politics is played has no business being in the office of the Presidency.
I can't see this so-called "man" staring down those who want to kill us and destroy the Republic.
The Media is raising every poll in Bush's favor, so they can drop them during and after the convention. Don't pay any attention to any poll done by a news organization. Especially the LA Times, Washington Post, CBS or CNN. It is all one big fraud.
Loving these internals:
New LA TIMES Poll: Kerry hurt by Swift Boat attacks, Bush ahead 49% -46% for the first time this year, Bush takes 15% of all Democrats, 20% of 'conservative/moderate' Democrats while Kerry takes 3% of Republicans...
I've just donated more money today to the President and to the SwiftVets.
Pour it on. Don't let up. Our future is at stake.
3 points in the "registered voter" category equates easily to 5 to 6 points in the "likely voter" category.... Stick a fork in Kerry, he's done.
Barring some huge unforseen event between now and election day, its over for Kerry.
No, that's the beauty of it.
Most of these numbers are the result of attacks on Kerry's service in Vietnam. It is Kerry's strongest hand, which is unfortunate for him, because it's mostly hype. The Swift Boat vets, spending a fraction of Soros's largess, are chipping away at the foundation of Kerry's 'warrior image' with devastating effectiveness.
The next hard hitting attacks will be on Kerry's actions in 70-72 with the VVAW. Their actions were questionable in the extreme, as were the results of their actions on returning veterans. In a bizarre and unadvisable coincidence, Kerry is about to combine an old mistake with a new one. Not only does he stand by his anti-military accusations made during the early 70s, but he is moving towards similar accusations against Iraqi veterans. In trying to paint Abu Ghraib as 'widespread abuses approved and executed from all levels of command', Kerry is swiftly straying onto familiar, but dangerous ground. The 'I'm trying to help the average soldier by painting him as a war criminal' routine may have worked in 1971, but in 2004 it will scare off voters like the plague.
The real critical hits will be when the cannons fire on his pitiful positions on defense spending for the last 30 years. Even running as a war candidate, he'll stuck between his shady Vietnam record and his atrocious record in the Senate. His casually dropped references to Vietnam will be tainted, and his calls for supporting the defense budget will look absurd.
Despite the spin, this is a sad state of affairs. With the election months away, Kerry is already looking battered, petty, and unable to roll with the punches.
The Democrats appear to have nominated a fatally flawed candidate. As much as some people despise Bush, and as easily as swing voters could be persuaded to vote against him, Kerry has too much baggage that will utterly alienate the average voter. See you in 08, Sen. Clinton.
Who was polled? Was this nationwide, California or metro LA?????
I was away from my computer and the news last weekend and I was shocked to see the Kerry campaign in disarray running around like chickens with their heads cut off-- no plan, no message, contradicting themsevles and I said: (drumroll) They're getting bad news in their polling data and they've panicked. Now the polls are coming out and I see why the panic. Remarkably they and the mainstream press cannot get the Kerry ship righted. I have seldom seen such outright stupidity in a Presidential cmapaign. Why not stop digging when you're in a hole? But Kerry keeps digging day after day and the MSM, in trying to help him, only keep it in the public eye. This is so delicious.
A distinct possibility
The underlined par was left out ;-)
The problem with the left attacking Bush is that their attacks are all old and ad homenem, they have been been making the same old attacks now for 6 months or more using 527s and it hasn't had any positive net impact for their canidate.... they are running on empty. They've got all the "hate bush" and "anyone but bush" the can find... they have nowhere else to go but down.
