Yes, thanks for the memory jog.

The timing of this is suspicious.

"I'm coming up short here..."
I'm coming up short here too... of cold hard facts. What we have available to us at the present time are preliminary data and bad feelings. My only point was that declaring this a terrorist attack without having even basic hard facts in front of us is getting a little ahead of ourselves; in my opinion. We don't even know for certain that two planes are down. The stories I've seen so far can only confirm that one plane went down and they're not sure where a second plane is because they don't see it on radar. That could mean a lot of things.

"its almost got to be one of two things: a mid air collision, or possibly Chechen terrorists." Idle speculation may in the end turn out to be right, but it does us no good.
I've seen several planes from the same airport get into simultaneous trouble simply because they were filled up with bad gas, for instance. The planes who were just "topped off" flew further than the ones that were completely filled up, but a whole bunch of planes were declaring emercencies all at once.
In this day and age, it's pretty normal to *guess* that these sorts of things are terrorist related; and that may turn out to be right...but don't go confusing such a *guess* with what "must" be the explanation.
In short, wait for more facts.

Why do you think it's so implausible? After all, a coordinated terrorist attack successfully downed FOUR jets here just under three years ago. What he is saying is that other things could have been the cause and to conclude terrorism is the cause (like people here tend to do with every plane crash) with absolutely no information available is just not a smart thing to do.

"Plenty of airliner accidents have happened and a mayday call was never sent. Sometimes the pilots are too busy with the problem to send the call.
"
If the planes were some distance apart, as some reports imply, what do you think might cause 2 planes to vanish, having left from the same airport at nearly the same time?
1. related accident/collision (distance is an issue here, how far apart where they when vanished from radar...if they were far apart they probably didn't collide.)
2. unrelated accidents (has this ever happened before)
3. hostile action
4. no planes have crashed

Sounds like a repeat of the Pennsylvania hijacking where the terrorists had to dump the planes rather than face angry Russians.

They would have taken off at different times and probably fueled at different times, I would think. One was 5oo miles further south than the other.
