CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush says a veterans group should stop television ads criticizing John Kerrys war record.
The president's criticism of the ads by Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth came as Bush denounced all TV ads by outside groups attacking both Kerry and himself on Monday and called for a halt to all such political efforts.
I think theyre bad for the system, he said.
Pablo Martinez Monsivais / AP The president, center, was meeting at his Texas ranch with his defense team when he made his remarks on the ad controversy.
When asked specifically whether the ads by the group "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" should be halted, Bush said: "All of them. That means that ad, every other ad. Absolutely."
"I can't be more plain about it," Bush said. "I hope my opponent joins me in condemning these activities of the 527s (political groups that sponsor to ads). I think they're bad for the system."

ABC top of the hour news was bashing President Bush for not doing as Kerry demanded and specifically condemning the SBVfT ads.
This story is simply an outrage. I mean, this is the MSM after all, but the President SAID NOTHING OF THE KIND as far as "denouncing" the Swift Boat Vets.
This is yet another new low for journalism. I have to shut up before I get profane.
Better Rove than people like the blind bashers on this thread screaming at him to stop doing what he is NOT DOING.
"Yep Signing CFR was a BRILLIANT move"
Yes, brilliant, indeed. That and his failed immigration policy, appointing Colin Powell to head State, the prescription drug entitlement, and budget-busting spending.
Having said all that, I am as certain as I am of the sunrise that electing Kerry would be a disaster on many fronts. I have always supported President Bush, even though some of his policy errors have been hard to swallow.
I justify my continued support by hoping a second Bush administration -- free to operate without thought of re-election -- will correct many of the mistakes.
Although I get a charge out of watching Kerry squirm in the face of the Swiftboat ads, I fear all this attention is detracting from Kerry's post-war traitorous behavior and his nineteen years as a liberal, do-nothing senator.
I think the Bush campaign finds the ads a hindrance, and I sincerely believe they will end up hurting the effort by election day. People do not appreciate being reminded of such a divisive time in history; why can't we concentrate on the Kerry of TODAY?
Paul Galante (7 year patron of the Hanoi Hiltion for you blind bashers) to be interviewed on Hannity soon.
As little johnny DEMANDED? LOL!!!
Who the hell is little johnny to tell the President of the United States what to do?
Man, how arrogant is this little twerp?
Relax guys... the damage from the truth about Kerry has been done. Remember this is politics.... well kind of like war. You through your bomb at the enemy and see where it lands, where it losens the teeth. It is all a part of winning the war. I think you will be pleasantly surprised when you see the other side of the rope a dope at the end of the convention. Kerry's knees are wobbling but you dont want to knock him to the canvass till the last possible moment to prevent sympathy backlash.
This is an ugly game, No one likes the rules, but these are the rules to get into the office. You can be a target or a participant .... you choose.
Waiting..............
misleading headline from Kerry's willing accomplicies in the media.
Which, from the guy who signed CFR into law, is consistent, I grant you. Consistently wrong.
Yep. He called several days ago for the end of 527 ads so this is nothing new. He knows Kerry won't call off Moveon.org and he knows the Vets aren't going to stop (they've already said they wouldn't) so he looks like the good guy trying to calm things down while the Vets keep pounding Kerry. I agree, win/win.
The only bad thing about this article is the intentionally misleading headline. MSNBC is just blatantly supporting the Kerry side in every way possible. They're going to lose the last dozen or so viewers they have left.
So much for freedom of speech.
Kerry's claim to the presidency is the past. 35 years ago is today for little Johnny. It's all he has.
You don't hear him wanting to discuss the last 35 years he's been AWOL, do you ?
Why, he's THE ONE, THE ONLY, Vietnam War Hero ®! He can say and do anything he wants! How DARE you question his patriotism! How dare you question HIM?!?!
Nope...sure looks "smart"...Bush did a bit of political softball today...took the high ground, and now left Kerry having to deal with the Swifties head on now...he can't run a crying to W anymore...;-)
He knows the swifties won't stop and deep down is probably glad...
Well you just said to me that Bush "called on all 527 ads to stop and called on Kerry to join him in stopping ALL of them." Make up your mind. I know, he is just asking nicely for all the groups to voluntarily stop. This from the guy who signed the law that CREATED 527s, no?
This is the only way he can counter attack Kerry for attacking HIM on the swift boat vets' ads rather than answer the charges.
What is there to counter? Kerry says it's a Bush ad, Bush says it's not. Great CFR law you signed there, GWB! LOL. Come to think of it, maybe it's just desserts. Too bad we all suffer for it.
It's nice to see some grown-ups here this morning. . .
The swift boat ads controversy is starting to work against the President. We need to move on to other more current and relevant issues, and get him re-elected.
Don't the ads have to be stopped sometime next month in order to comply with the McCain-Feingold CFR law? (Naturally, this applies to MoveOn.org as well.)
#48 = excellent!
