"It's the right thing to do."

HUH.......NO it IS NOT!....Calling for the end to 527's is RIGHT......not calling the end of a specific ad....if that's what you mean. AND, furthermore, this could be a chess move.....he can call all he wants for an end to them, but they (SBVT) have gone on the record saying they will NOT LISTEN TO THE PRESIDENT'S REQUESTS!

Just breaking on FoxNews.com......

Anyone hear anything else?

CNBC broke with it around 11:35 am.

Minutes later, CNN acknowledged that the AP is going with the story, but the CNN correspondent in Crawford, TX denied that Bush specifically demanded the end to the Swifty ads.

This hardly makes sense, considering that the Bush/Cheney campaign sent out a letter to the new stations denying any connection to the Swiftboat ads. My guess is that FOX may have gone back to them and asked if they haven't supported the ads, will they ask that they stop? The answer probably was, yes, we have called for an end to all 527 ads.

I sent them $$ so these ads could continue-as have many otheres here.

I assume that the SBVT will be true to their word to keep airing the ads even if President Bush asked them to stop.

Not a chance...these folks are Men of Conscience and will be in this race 'til November. Dubyuh would be wrong to try and silence them as their voices deserve to be heard!!

The headline is actually Bush Seeks End to Independent Ads...

Only authorized government agencies and CBS/NBC/ABC/NYT/LAT/WP should be allowed to comment on political issues and election campaigns.

The framers of the Constitution never intended for ordinary people to be allowed to participate in the national political debate.

Read your own link to Fox News. Your headline is incorrect.

Maybe we could get the headline changed before some FReepers have heart attacks.

Who knows what Bush said. We'll just have to wait a little. It would be great for him to ask that the ads be pulled. The Swiftvets can just say, "Thanks for your opinion, but we think we will keep on saying what we believe." Bush then can take the high road and have it both ways, unless this whole thing starts to create sympathy for Kerry, a danger that should not be discounted.

Guys/gals...don't poopoo Bush's response. Politics 101...don't ever apologize. Soo...don't ever put yourself to HAVE to apologize. The moment you do either...you've given your opponent red meat in the eyes of the wishy-washy middle of the roaders out there looking for any reason to hate/love someone.

This is a very VERY smart move. Maybe Bush needs to do a public speech...and include with it a big ole WINK. Then dare the liberals to condemn him.

Not to worry. Rove is in charge here of the campaign, and this is a chess move. GWB now has a night fork-checking Kerry's Queen and King. Hooyah!

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush (news - web sites) denounced TV ads by outside groups attacking both John Kerry (news - web sites) and himself on Monday and called for a halt to all such political efforts. "I think they're bad for the system," he said.

"The SBVFT do NOT necessarily support Bush.
Many are Dems.

They just OPPOSE Kerry.
They don't care who you vote for,
or if you don't vote at all,
just don't vote for Kerry.
"

That may well be, but the ads and the vituperative dialog going on around them may not be a good thing for Bush. It's happened in the past, you know, that negative advertising has actually helped the candidate it was aimed at.

Again, I can't predict, but I'm more than a little concerned that this whole business may not benefit Bush in November.

You run a huge risk when you attack the military service of a candidate. A huge risk. When Bush calls his opponent's service "noble," the Swift Boat Vets may not be accomplishing what they set out to do.

I know the whole thing is very popular among Freepers, but I'm not sure it plays as well out there in the general population. So far, the whole controversy hasn't affected the polls much, one way or another. We'll see.

Please change the title of this thread.

It should be "Bush Seeks End to Independent Ads" (as he has from the beginning)

This incorrect title is leading people to think that Bush is a wuss.

Thanks.
