~ MONDAY FAVORITES ~
This week: What is your favorite dessert?

In our continuing series about your favorites, we ask this week about food. We chose this topic for the most obvious of reasons--we all like eating. Instead of wasting time eating something nutritious, we skip to dessert. After all, that's the most important part of the meal. So? Post your favorite dessert and a picture on the thread. If you can't reach us via Freepmail, email us at canteenusa@canteenusa.com . By the way, you can put more than one favorite dessert. These things can be hard sometimes. We don't want to stress you.

~ Dessert Exhibit A~
~ Cookies ~

Don't see your favorite dessert? Post it on the thread. Also, post the recipe if you'd like. (Click pictures for recipes! If you have a better recipe, please share it with everyone!)

Chocolate Chip Cookies

DID YOU KNOW?
Ruth Wakefield invented Chocolate Chip Cookies. Ruth Graves Wakefield graduated from the Framingham State Normal School Department of Household Arts in 1924. She worked as a dietitian and lectured on food, until, together with her husband she bought a tourist lodge named the Toll House Inn.

Ruth Wakefield prepared the recipes for the meals served to the guests at the Inn and gained local notoriety for her deserts. One of her favorite recipes was for Butter Drop Do cookies. The recipe called for the use of baker's chocolate and one day Ruth found herself without the needed ingredient. She substituted a semi-sweet chocolate bar cut up into bits. However, unlike the baker's chocolate the chopped up chocolate bar did not melt completely, the small pieces only softened.

As it so happened the chocolate bar had been a gift from Andrew Nestle of the Nestle Chocolate Company. As the Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe became popular, sales of Nestle's semi-sweet chocolate bar increased. Andrew Nestle and Ruth Wakefield struck a deal. Nestle would print the Toll House Cookie recipe on its packaging and Ruth Wakefield would have a lifetime supply of Nestle chocolate. (Click here to find out more information.)

I seem to be switching between either I can't stay awake or I can't go to sleep again. ... Actually been eating pretty good (because I don't have the energy to make dessert, so when I eat "junk food," it's Edy's ice cream with banana). ... But, I DO have a "young lady" state of mind. (I just wish I had her energy! LOL)

"Phony Vietnam veterans alleged in books
Guenter Lewy's 1978 book America in Vietnam (pages 316-317) and B.G. Burkett and Glenna Whitley's Stolen Valor (Verity Press, Inc., Dallas, Texas)(pages 113, 131-137) contain similar information about alleged flaws in Lane's book. Neither book, however, refutes any of the testimony given during the Winter Soldier Investigation.

Lawyer and leftist activist Mark Lane was one of the organizers of Winter Soldier. In 1970, Lane had published a book called Conversations With Americans purporting to be interviews with Vietnam veterans about war crimes, containing Vietnam tales of atrocities. Reporter Neil Sheehan showed some interviewed in Lane's book had never served in Vietnam and others had not been in the situations they described. Lane admitted he did not check military records, as confirmation of details was not relevant. Lane later confirmed these militarty records.
The following are often falsely listed as being participants in Winter Soldier, but were actually in Lane's book instead. This confusion is probably due to Stolen Valor having an explanation of Lane's history within the section on Winter Soldier.
Chuck Onan, stock room clerk in Beaufort, S.C.
Michael Schneider, deserted in Europe and deserted again in the USA.
Terry Whitmore, was in an unpopulated area of Vietnam.
Garry Gianninoto, medical corpsman at battalion headquarters.
VVAW leader and Winter Soldier co-organizer Al Hubbard lied about being an officer, and sustaining war injuries - but he never testified at Winter Soldier .
According to the investigative work of Burkett, Lewy and others, there were many imposters, liars, and plain nutjobs who infiltrated the ranks of the anti-war movement, and, in some cases, testified to war crimes and atrocities that never occurred in order to get attention, sympathy, and, in one documented case, medals and honors."

Did you hear O'Neill on Rush today? (I'm listening to the archives now! Great interview! ... Of course, it helps that Rush gives him time to reply to the questions.) ;)

Open a package of Philadephia Cream Cheese (the good stuff -- not that fat free cr*p) and put it on a small plate. Press minced garlic around the top and sides, then pour Kikkumon soy sauce over all (not too much -- you don't want to drown it).

I'm coming to this thread late, can ya tell? Any way I saw your recipe & it reminds me of one of my own. I marinate the cream cheese block in a baggie with soy sauce for a couple of hours, Then I cover all sides with toasted seasame seeds & serve with rice crackers. Yum
