A former bodyguard of Osama bin Laden, who is now a leader in the terrorist group in Yemen, has disclosed new details of al-Qaida's strategy, including plans to increase bombing attacks in Saudi Arabia.
Nasir Ahmad Nasir Al Bahri, also known as Abu Jandal, told the London Arabic newspaper Al-Quds al-Arabi that he was born in Saudi Arabia and is currently involved in export-import trading in Yemen.
Al Bahri was trained in Afghanistan and was imprisoned on charges that he participated in the October 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Aden, Yemen.
Al Bahri said three FBI agents questioned him about al-Qaida methods. He said he told the FBI that while the United States has weapons, it does not have men of conviction, like al-Qaida.
He and 16 others were among the first group of al-Qaida members from the Arabian peninsula and are thus regarded as founders.
"Our duties included preaching for the ideology and the cause, rousing the people and getting prepared to carry out martyrdom operations," he stated.
"Al-Qaida had sought right from the start to foster confrontation between the United States and the Islamic World," he said.
Al Bahri said bin Laden told the group that the organization could not continue "qualitative operations" and that the plan was to "draw the United States into a confrontation with all the Islamic peoples."
Based on the success in forcing the U.S. withdrawal from Somalia in 1993, the group is trying to draw the United States into an ideological confrontation while avoiding a military confrontation.
"Muslims have now reached the point where they are fed up with the United States, which lives in prosperity off our nation's resources," he said. "I believe that the United States is heading for its demise. As to the future of al-Qaida, I believe that it has found what it wanted. It can now melt into a new caldron and a new giant would be reborn, of which al-Qaida would be a part. Many of the Islamic world leaders would join it and the confrontation with the United States would be inevitable. And, al-Qaida would not be the leader, but a vanguard army."
Al Bahri said his responsibility was to guard bin Laden and to work at al-Qaida "guest houses" in Kabul and Kandahar. Al Bahri said he was familiar with the terrorists who carried out the Cole bombing, which killed 19 U.S. sailors and injured scores others.
"This operation was preceded by another one that was supposed to have taken place a year earlier but it failed due to certain natural factors," he said, noting that the earlier target was also the Cole.
The initial plan was to attack the ship in international waters "so that no state in the region would assume the consequences of this operation," he said.
"The destroyer was being watched for some time," he said. "The information on it was collected by committees, and the implementers of this operation were two persons only."
Al-Qaida uses a method known as "centralization of decision and decentralization of execution," he said.
"The decision was made centrally, but the method of attack and execution was the duty of field commanders."
Al Bahri said the U.S. guided missile destroyer was chosen to "break U.S. prestige" in the sea and to raise the morale of Islamist terrorists by showing that they could conduct attacks on the enemy on land, sea or air.
Al Bahri said al-Qaida believes that the United States is seeking to control the region through Iraq and that many al-Qaida have gone to Iraq.

not too brite are they?
Fact is that 'all Islamic peoples' are against everyone else, by definition. If they weren't, then the word 'Islamic' wouldn't apply.
"al-Qaida,,, plans to increase bombing attacks in Saudi Arabia."
Good idea! I'm all for it!
First, bomb the hell out of Mecca!
Then pulverize Medina!
You go, al-Qaida!!!
I'm all for ya!
This guy has been watching too much CNN and therefore doesn't have a clue.
Thank you so much, billy klinton.
Democrats are dangerous to America's future security.
The United States does not have men of conviction? Who are the professional American soldiers methodically hunting down and killing members of Al Qaeda by the truckload?
