Fox News ^

PRUDHOE BAY, Alaska — Just mentioning "ANWR" (search) and oil drilling in the same breath is bound to touch off a controversy.

But the governor of Alaska says it's a non-issue because he plans to search for oil on state land just off the shore from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Oil in ANWR will take 10 years to develop, and would give us about 4 months of oil. Pointless.

Bush needs to issue an Executive Order to start drilling immediately. The Arab world is holding our economic stability hostage. This is becoming a national emergency. We need competion with foreign oil to get the prices back down.

According to who?

"ANWR could produce nearly 1.4 million barrels of oil, while Texas produces just more than one million barrels a day, California just less than one million barrels a day and Louisiana produces slightly more than 200,000 barrels a day."

There was a thread on this yesterday. This is not news anyway since it was announced several months ago. Bringing it up now is clearly election related. Pure politics.

I don't believe there is any serious argument to the premise that someday we will run out of oil. That being the case, I'm all for getting it over with. Therefore, I'm trading in my four cylinder for a Hummer. I hope you all will join me.

According to who?

Estimates vary from 6 billion to 16 billion, with the lower figure more likely. It is significant, large, but not hugh.

Thanks for the spin which came from the same people who in Jimmah Carter's day said the total world's reserves of oil would be depleted by 2012. If oil companies think there is enough oil there to make it worth their investment, than Americans should benefit from OUR OWN OIL! Let those in the oil business risk their capital and let us benefit from their risk. This is Capitalism at work.

We do not need more oil. We need more oil refining capablities.

Four months is an exaggeration. But let us suppose that ANWR yields 10 billion barrels, total. That is a generous estimate. We consume 20 million barrels a day. That's 7.3 billion per year. So ANWR has about 1.5 years of oil, which will be ready in 10 years. Great.

Yeah,
The main reason that U.S. consumers do not pay european rates for petrol ($3-5/gallon) is because a relatively notable fraction of the U.S. petroleum production is domestic, supplimented by the fact that the OPEC nations know that if they ever jacked their prices up high enough, the U.S. would begin a major domestic petroleum campaign that would eventually hamper their monopoly.

Even if the United States does not start dropping wells all over the place, we do need to strengthen our hand against the OPEC forces and keep their strangle hold on Petroleum in check.

No oil field on the planet has ever or could have pumped 20 MMbbl/day; it's a little matter of physics. ANWR will yield, fully developed, somewhere between 900K and 1.6MMbbl/day. Call it 1.2MM, just to have a reasonable number. Figure that number constant until the field is 80% exhausted.

If the reserve is at the low end of estimates, 6 Bbbl, that will mean throughput of 1.2MM for 4800/1.2 or 4000 days, about 11 years.

This is well PAST worthwhile, all envirodork spinning to the contrary.

Refineries are running at full capacity, they have been for years. If we had all the oil in the world it could not be refined for the market any faster than it is now. We do not need more oil we need more refineries and less EPA government regulations. Then the price would fall.

I'm for drilling in ANWAR but looking past having this ANWAR oil question is, what are we going to do with all this new oil once we get it? They are refining the oil for market they have as fast as they can now.

These guys pooh poohing ANWR's reserves will be singing a different tune when their tank runs dry someday and it costs $350 to fill it up.

Had dinner last night with the daughter of the head honcho at one of the main, off-shore refineries for a U.S. oil producer. She said that her dad has often said that the US is awash in oil; the problem is in overcoming the obstacles erected by the pseudo-environmentalists to further drilling.

One thing you leave out, is that right now, we are getting along without any oil from ANWR. How long could this source of oil be used to temper the price gouging of other oil producers. It is not a trivial waste as you submit. But if it will really take 10 years to begin production, there is not time like the present to start.

THAT IS A LIE!!!!!

There is between 8to30 BILLION barrels of oil in Anwr.To only last4 months? We would have to use at LEAST 2 Billion barrels a MONTH.

YOU are either a DAMN LIAR,OR you are STUPID!

Which is it!
