"Was everything ugly in the 70s? Clothes - cars - hairstyles -"

No, not everything. A lot of the girls I rememeber were pretty hot.

Ugliest car? Anything made by Zil in Russia.

(They do have one use though - you can get at least 50 clowns inside one at the circus).

The car is the one from the 80's classic movie "Vacation". It is better know as the family truckster. In the movie "Honkey Lips" was spray painted on the quarter panel after mistakenly driving through a bad neighorhood in St. Louis.

I have a friend in the Mojave Desert who has [a VW thing] - with a V-8 mounted in it. The thing will practically climb a tree.

What keeps it from going over on its back like a turtle when you pop the clutch? Rear engine, rear wheel drive, feather light front end and 400 HP are a dangerous mix.

"What about Russian and Soviet-era vehicles in the East Bloc?"

- The ugliest car ever made was undoubtedly the Citroen produced back about the time of the Edsel. They only seemed to come in gun metal grey, the ass stuck up in the air off of skinny tires, the sheet metal looked like corrugated iron and all the body parts were literally bolted together. I was told that Citroen made them especially for farmers on properties in the more remote parts of the French empire where repairs and replacements were hard to come by. It was a rolling turd but I saw a number of them on the roads in North America about that time so they must have also been cheap to buy.

I thought the same thing when I first saw them but now I like em more the more I see em. The Element and Aztec are still ugly.

An Isetta is the ugliest old car & the Honda Element has to be the worst looking thing on the road today. The Mini Cooper is just funny looking not ugly.

That's a good question- I'd never thought to ask. I have never seen or felt the front end lift, and I have driven it once or twice. I don't think that it's ballasted. I'll ask him. There used to be a page about it on the net. It's still there, but all the pictures are gone.

He'll probably say "Don't pop the clutch"- but I think that the problem has been dealt with somehow.

No matter how innovative, this list is not complete without
mentioning the 1934 Chrysler Airflow.
