Poll: N.J. Governor's Approval Nudges Up

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -
Gov. James E. McGreevey's approval rating has not suffered since he announced that he had an affair with a man and will resign in November, a new poll showed Sunday.
The governor's approval rating was 45 percent, 2 points higher than in a similar poll conducted two weeks earlier, according to the Star-Ledger/Eagleton-Rutgers poll.
The telephone poll of 400 adults was conducted Thursday and Friday nights. The error margin of error is plus or minus 5 percentage points.
McGreevey, who is married, announced his resignation Thursday. Sources in his administration named former McGreevey adviser Golan Cipel as his extramarital partner and said he had demanded millions of dollars to stay quiet.
Cipel has said that he is not gay and that he was the target of repeated and unwanted sexual advances by McGreevey.
Opinion on whether McGreevey should resign immediately or stay in office until November was split along party lines.
Seventy-four percent of those who identified themselves as Republicans said McGreevey should quit right away, compared to 29 percent of those who said they were Democrats.
Overall, 45 percent agreed with McGreevey's decision to step down on Nov. 15, while 44 percent said he should resign immediately.
Sixty percent of those polled believe there is "more to the story," and 58 percent said McGreevey has been less than forthcoming about his personal life.
Forty-one percent said they were not surprised to learn that McGreevey is gay.
"Garden State residents tend to be tolerant of alternate lifestyles and most do not want to kick McGreevey when he is down," said acting poll director Patrick Murphy. "However, there is a suspicion that this is not the full story and that there may be other skeletons in the closet."

McGreevey's cynical ploy to play the "I'm a member of a liberal "victim" group" card to dilute reaction to his corruption is working like a charm.
And, many of us wonder why Kerry is doing so well, against W.

This is not surprising. NJ is trey-gay-chic, after all.
But this poll puts to lie any Rat spin that the guy resigned *because* he was gay.
Clearly he resigned for another reason altogether.
5 Legislative Days Left Until The AWB Expires
New Jersey is overrun by brain-dead liberals. A sex scandal ALWAYS helps a Democrat.
I got news for you, McGreevey never really intended on resigning.
That's sheer Sh**!
The Star Ledger is a left wing rag. Anyone I've spoken to about it in NJ is totally disgusted and wants him the hell out of office. They are horrified that a homo would put his lust as more important than keeping us safe from terrorists.
Blech!
LOL..
Told yas it was a resume enhancer.
Next think they'll want to canonize the s o b.
McGreevey, resign now!
Anyone question the validity of the poll?
Either New Jersey residents are extremely ignorant or the polls are skewed.
The only way McGreevey's ratings would have plummeted is if he had declared at his news conference he was a born-again fundamentalist Christian.
McGreevy was a "rising star" among democrats. What the heck do you have to do to be a falling star?
Kerry will copy McGreevey just like he copies every other thing a politician does that looks like it works. Who will he say he's had an affair with? George Stephanopolis? John Edwards? Howard Dean? John McCain?
I think the person you need to watch in this is McGreevy's wife.

Gov. McGreevey's Wife Stands by Her Man
By ANGELA DELLI SANTI

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -
Dina Matos McGreevey stood frozen in place as her husband of nearly four years, the governor of New Jersey, dealt her a series of potentially marriage-ending blows: He is gay, he had an extramarital affair with a man, and the consequences of his actions leave him unable to govern.
Matos McGreevey, 38, didn't flinch during the governor's painful coming-out speech. An unreadable half-smile pasted on her face, she stood silently by the governor's side, at times holding his hand.
New Jersey's understated first lady remained a picture of composure as she lived out an epic personal crisis in the most public of forums: in front of live TV cameras in the governor's jam-packed office...
Fontoura called his longtime friend "almost as much a political junkie as Gov. McGreevey is," and said the two were very much alike.
Dina met her future husband in 1997 when she was raising money for the Democrats, and he was the mayor of Woodbridge making his first run for governor.

"Really, really, really lonely." :)
