So let me get this straight – NJ Governor Resigns
Life's Trek ^ | August 12, 2004 | David K. Kittel

Posted on 08/12/2004 5:28:35 PM PDT by LifeTrek

I have to take my hat off to New Jersey Governor James E. McGreevey for his courageous move on Thursday August 12, 2004. The Governor came out as a having had an affair with another man, saying, “Shamefully, I engaged in adult consensual affairs with another man, which violates my bonds of matrimony,” he said “it was wrong. It was foolish. It was inexcusable.”

He stated that his ability to govern would be affected because of his sexuality and the affair. These left the governors office vulnerable! WABC-TV of New York reported that McGreevey was expecting a lawsuit by a former aide accusing him of sexual harassment.

The resignation and admission of the affair as well as the admission about his sexuality were extremely courageous acts and as noted by Steve Fisher a spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign coming out is a very personal experience – made very public in McGreevey’s case.

While the details are not yet completely “out” as of this writing I have to say that this makes McGreevey the nation’s number one Democrat - in terms of his integrity, honesty, and regard for the citizens he governed - that I have seen in the past twelve years.

How can I claim that a Gay man who just admitted an extramarital affair deserves this honor? Well, like this - these details all sound quite familiar to an earlier event that outraged me! And if you take the liberal playbook and consistently apply the standards then in this case the issue of being gay should be a non-issue!

The nation suffered eight years of similar exposure to lawsuits and exposure to vulnerability from 1993 to 2001 the only difference is that the office was much more important and this exposure affected many more peoples lives. From 2001 to the present we have been subjected to throngs of Democrats attempting to rehabilitate the reputation of the man who held this office. Yes, I am talking about Bill Clinton.

As a conservative I have to give McGreevey credit for his courage and the strength of his character, after all I was outraged at Clinton for putting the nation through our period of shame and not doing the honorable thing.

While Governor McGreevey said, "Given the circumstances surrounding the affair and its likely impact upon my family and my ability to govern, I have decided the right course of action is to resign.”

This is what then President Clinton gave us:

"It depends on what the meaning of the words 'is' is." –Bill Clinton, during his 1998 grand jury testimony on the Monica Lewinsky affair

It depends on how you define alone…" –Bill Clinton, in his grand jury testimony "There were a lot of times when we were alone, but I never really thought we were." –Bill Clinton, in his grand jury testimony

“I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.” - Bill Clinton, in his grand jury testimony "What's a man got to do to get in the top fifty?" –Bill Clinton, reacting to a survey of journalists that ranked the Monica Lewinsky scandal as the 53rd most significant story of the century

And then there is this one that gives those of us on the right the proof we needed that the national security was second to the party:

“I may not have been the greatest president, but I've had the most fun eight years." –Bill Clinton

Remember that there were lawsuits pending against Mr. Clinton, not just the threat of legal action and a judge determined that the President perjured himself.

This President is still held up as the best the Democrats have ever had! To that I advance this – McGreevey has more courage and integrity then Clinton has ever even thought of having.

In an attempt to deflect from Clinton’s failings, as a man and as a President, (including exposing the nation to the attacks of 9/11) the self appointed Fourth Branch of Government (the Elite Media - see also, "Lie-N-Hype 9/11") has chosen to distort or ignore the facts. Luckily they won’t have to make that decision thanks to Governor McGreevey by taking one for the Democrats he saved them from exposing their hypocracy.

We all have failings, it is how we handle them that show our character – or lack of character.

Governor McGreevey’s character is still strong and he leaves New Jersey strong because of his honorable actions. President Clinton’s character can only be described as weak and as a result he left our nation weaker then when he took office because of his failure to act honorably.

This will be another situation when the media will be in a Catch-22 of their own making. They will probably focus upon his being gay which goes against their own liberal sensibilities. They should focus upon his character and his strength, however doing so would expose their hypocrisy!

I admire Governor McGreevey for admitting his mistake and putting the needs of the people of New Jersey ahead of his own personal ambitions. I wish our former President had done the same thing.

Personally, I just wish that he and others would keep their sex lives to themselves--but guess that's wistful thinking.

I wonder how much of his announcement was planned to take the other news off the front page--or keep it from ever getting there. Things like Sandy Berger and the Swift Boat Veterans, for example.

He's waiting because the laws of NJ are such that timing is everything for the dims to hold the governorship. Maybe someone else can elucidate that law better, as I don't remember the details.

He certainly told his side of the story very well.

But I think I'll hold my judgment until the facts come out.

Excellent point, one that bears repeating! (And highlighting in red...?)

Gag. Spare me the sap.

He's trying to divert attention from whatever he's really guilty of. If he's so damn honest and full of integrity, he would make his resignation effective immediately instead of 3 months from now.

There's got to be more to this story than meets the eye.

Uh, there's more to this than "I'm a gay American and I'm sorry I cheated on my wife, who's a saint." Evidently graft and corruption rear their ugly heads, and McGreevey's boyfriend tried a bit of extortion. Stay tuned for act 2.

No, a man with courage and concern for NJ would resign effective immediately. This man is out to save his skin and the party's slot as governor.

If I was in NJ I would be on the streets picketing for his IMMEDIATE removal. Protect the state! Don't people from NJ have any guts?

Shame this didn't come out earlier. Kerry could have had him as a running mate and really gotten his liberal base excited!

This will be spun as "homophobic America" forces true-to-self Governor to resign.

Of course, all the corruption (the real reasons for his resignation) will be ignored, while the calls for more "tolerance" and "sensitivity" will grow louder.

Barf.

I thought the same thing. The Sandy Berger story is already dead, however, I think the Swift Boat Veterans are not going away anytime soon. This issue is going to continue to haunt Kerry no matter how many Gay Democrat Governors come out of the closet.

Someone said on another thread...that the only reason he is resigning...is he probably knows he's in deep trouble, and potentially civil and criminal charges await his future. I agree.

The time was right, from a PR standpoint, to resign..and blame it on his "sexual confusion".

The press will lap this up.........

I would like to know how exactly it can be described as "courageous" what he did. He cheated on his wife with another man repeatedly and is proud of it. It's absolutely disgusting. I feel for his kids and his family, he has destroyed everything for them.

If I were his wife, I would be going straight to the doctor to get every STD test on the book. God knows what he might have given her.

It's really too bad for the family, particularly the two little girls.

McGreevyy.

McGreevey was born in Jersey City on August 6, 1957. After graduation from St. Joseph's High School, he received a bachelor's degree from Columbia University and a law degree from Georgetown University. He also holds a master's degree in education from Harvard University.

McGreevey married the former Dina Matos on October 7, 2000. Their daughter, Jacqueline Matos, was born on December 7, 2001. McGreevey also has a daughter from a previous marriage, Morag Veronica, who was born on October 27, 1992.
