Take Action! McGreevey Out NOW! (quick action item)
FR ^

Posted on 08/12/2004 4:45:35 PM PDT by jmstein7

Jim McGreevey has resigned as Governor of New Jersey... but he is making his resignation effective in NOVEMBER, after the election, for the mere purpose of preventing a Republican from taking over the Governorship and to prevent helping Bush's reelection effort.  This man is a disgrace!  This is unacceptable, and you can help the effort to get him out NOW!  Here are a few small steps that may make a BIG difference:

1.  Contact McGreevey's Former Opponent, Bret Schundler (R-NJ)

Here is Bret's email address:  bret@schundler.org

Send Bret an email asking him to demand McGreevey's immediate exit.  Here is a sample email if you are short on time:

Dear Bret,

Jim McGreevey has disgraced the state of New Jersey, and he has no business remaining in office until November.  I hope you will lead the charge to make McGreevey's exite immediate.

This is not about the Governor's sexual orientation -- this is about Jim McGreevey's corruption and unscrupulous behavior.  McGreevey did not resign for the good of New Jersey; if he did, he would have, rightly, left immediately.  McGreevey left to save himself, dodge a bullet (a civil suit), and save the Democrat Party.  This is disgraceful.

Please do the right thing and lead the charge to make McGreevey's resignation immediate!

Sincerely,

2.  Contact New Jersey State Senate Republican Leader Leonard Lance

You can call and leave a message here:  (908) 788-6900

Or, you can email him by clicking HERE and then clicking the "contact" link.  You can send him an email similar to the one you sent to Bret Schundler.  E.g.:

Dear Senator Lance,

Sincerely,

3.  Send a Letter to the Editor

First, open the "Write for W," easy letter-to-the-editor form HERE.

Before you start, be sure to enter your zipcode in the form provided and select "get info" -- the red button.

Check off all the publication names, and then scroll down to write your letter.  If you have the time, then click "Show All Newspapers" and check off as many boxes as you can.

Again, based on the sample we've been using, the letter should read something like this:

To The Editor

Jim McGreevey has disgraced the state of New Jersey, and he has no business remaining in office until November.  This is not about the Governor's sexual orientation -- this is about Jim McGreevey's corruption and unscrupulous behavior.  McGreevey did not resign for the good of New Jersey; if he did, he would have, rightly, left immediately.  McGreevey left to save himself, dodge a bullet (a civil suit), and save his party.  This is disgraceful and shameful.  He must leave office immediately.

"I just hear on CNN that somebody else is going to compete his term."

Yes, but his term doesn't end until the end of NEXT year. So the sub won't be in for a few months, he'll be in for a year and 1/2, nearly. If McGreevy had died or become incapcited in some other way today, there would be a "special election" to finish his term in November. As it is we citizens of NJ will have someone not chosen by anyone, just by luck, to run our entire state for all that time.

This is what he's attempting to do by postponing the date of his resignation by more than three (3!!!) months.

Thanks for the specifics, I heard some bits about this but I couldn't figure out why he would resign for being gay. This, plus cheating on your spouse, are lib badges of honor.

He should get two Purple Hearts.

I don't think he ever "wanted" the wives, it was a show for political ambition.

The rumors of him with men were around back when he was mayor, I hesitated to believe it for sure since it was being told to me 3rd hand etc....

There is always the New Jersey Constitution to get him out

http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/lawsconstitution/constitution.asp

2b. The people reserve unto themselves the power to recall, after at least one year of service, any elected official in this State or representing this State in the United States Congress. The Legislature shall enact laws to provide for such recall elections. Any such laws shall include a provision that a recall election shall be held upon petition of at least 25% of the registered voters in the electoral district of the official sought to be recalled. If legislation to implement this constitutional amendment is not enacted within one year of the adoption of the amendment, the Secretary of State shall, by regulation, implement the constitutional amendment, except that regulations adopted by the Secretary of State shall be superseded by any subsequent legislation consistent with this constitutional amendment governing recall elections. The sufficiency of any statement of reasons or grounds procedurally required shall be a political rather than a judicial question.

What if the Reeps win back the New Jersey Senate in November 2004.

I don't think that's possible. They hold their state elections on odd numbered years. The next governor's race there is in November 2005.

Question???

If McGreevy does quit and a new election happens and a Republican wins, How long will he serve? Only until 2005 or does he get 4 years?

Let us not forget that Santiago, the Superintendent of the State Police, was forced out after it was learned that the information of his investigation was being sent to him!

We need better ideas. More creative ones. I was born in Newark a long time ago. Ideas that have media impact. FReepers should think like the Yippies from 30 years ago. I am 3100 miles away but can help with logistics.
