SAN FRANCISCO - The California Supreme Court ruled Thursday that San Francisco's mayor overstepped his authority by issuing same-sex marriage licenses this spring. The court also voided all the marriages of gay and lesbian couples sanctioned by the city.
The court said the city violated the law when it issued the certificates and performed the marriage ceremonies in a monthlong wedding march that began Feb. 12, since both legislation and a voter-approved measure defined marriage as a union between a man and woman.
The court, however, did not resolve whether the California Constitution would permit a same-sex marriage, ruling instead on the narrow issue of whether local officials could bypass California's judicial and legislative branches.
Boy! Is this ever gonna tick of ROSIE O'DONNELL!!
Unbelievable. Do we actually have some sensible judges left?
This ruling would imply that some judges in California actually understand the law . . . I need to know more details.
Yep, the Massachussets gambit comes next.
Now they have to address whether the Judicial Branch can bypass the legislative(READ: the PEOPLE!)Branch of government...
I wonder how the Big Elite Liberal Media will treat this news? ...not really, I know how!
The media is currently concentrating on the heartbreak of gay unionists who suddenly discovered that their marriage certificates aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

Sadly, there will be those in the legislature who will allow it.
Score one for the rule of law---it's been in a long scoring drought these days.
Awwwwww think of all those that were saving themselves for marriage and have been....dare I say it...........soiled ?
No white wedding dress for Fred next time I guess !
I said when this crap started that it would wind up this way and that the taxpayers would foot the bill for this massive "fraud" lawsuit .......... Ambulance chasin little gators lining up for their slice of faggot pie !
"The court said the city violated the law when it issued the certificates and performed the marriage ceremonies in a monthlong wedding march that began Feb. 12, since both legislation and a voter-approved measure defined marriage as a union between a man and woman."
If the mayor violated the law, what is the penalty?
Shouldn't he be arrested for violating the law? What about the cost for issuing false documents? Wasting city workers time at taxpayer expense? (Oh, SF...)
Victory for Traditional Marriage!
Was it unanimous? 5-2? 4-3?
For decades they have been ruling that they can.
Only the judicial branch of government is accountable to no one.
And people bash Mohammedan countries for being ruled by "unelected men in black robes."
I suggest a class action suit against Gavin Newsom, individually, for fraud. I think he's loaded, isn't he?
I was pleased but TOTALLY SURPRISED by this news!
This is, afterall, California.
It is amazing how out of balance our system of checks and balances is getting. The judiciary is becoming by far the most powerful branch of government ursurping much of the power of the legislative branch. The legislative branch has its hands tied on every law they try to pass.
John and John are deeply saddened.
