Bin Laden hints major assassination

By Bill Gertz
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Published August 11, 2004

U.S. intelligence officials say a high-profile political assassination, triggered by the public release of a new message from Osama bin Laden, will lead off the next major al Qaeda terrorist attack, The Washington Times has learned.

The assassination plan is among new details of al Qaeda plots disclosed by U.S. officials familiar with intelligence reports who, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the killing could be carried out against a U.S. or foreign leader either in the United States or abroad.

The officials mentioned Saudi Arabia and Yemen, two nations that are working with the United States in the battle against al Qaeda, as likely locales for the opening assassination.

The planning for the attacks to follow involves "multiple targets in multiple venues" across the United States, one official said.

This article is very frightening. I guess that's what terrorists do, they have us living in fear. I just hate the Republican Convention being in NYC. It also makes me nervous when the President goes around the country in that bus.

They must be getting tips by reading about John Kerry's own antiwar organization.

"The goal of the next attack is twofold: to damage the U.S. economy and to undermine the U.S. election," the official said. "The view of al Qaeda is 'anybody but Bush.' "

Indeed! A vote for Kerry is a vote for AQ.

So, DU is involved?

This is disturbing news, but let us not forget the most recent terrorist plot that was broken up in which the terrorists planned to assassinate the Pakistani diplomat to the United States.

In short, targeted assassination is nothing new to terrorists. In fact, it's as old as bin Laden's beard is long.

What's even more frightening is the potential possibility that supporters of President Bush could be targeted, too.

If I were Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, or any well-known radio talk show host or TV personality that is critical of the Left, I would HIGHLY suggest they increase protection around them. Can you imagine the public-relations and political fallout if Limbaugh, Hannity or Bill O'Reilly is killed by a terrorist with ties to al-Qaeda?

That was a sting operation. There was no plot to kill the Pakistani diplomat. That was the story the government informant gave to the arrested people so they'd think he was a bona fide terrorist.

Certainly, a Congressman, Senator or Governor on the campaign trail is vulnerable. Wasn't there something back in 2002 about al Qaeda plans to pick off elected officials on the golf course?

I'm actually more worried about the Supreme Court justices.

actually, I'm more inclined to fear such attack from a member of the tolerant left.

The terrorists want us to live in fear. Fear is a weapon they use quite often.

I can't remember which show I was watching today, but a guy was on that wrote a book on terrorists. He was "absolutely certain" that AQ has portable nukes, and that they got them from Russia recently, well maintained and operable.

I hope that he was just a crack-pot.

This article is very frightening.

I don't know if I buy the idea of a threat.

The timing is awfully suspicious in a political sense. /s

Didn't I just say this 8 hours ago:
"The goal of the next attack is twofold: to damage the U.S. economy and to undermine the U.S. election," the official said. "The view of al Qaeda is 'anybody but Bush.' "
From the Washington Times report this AM "Bin Laden hints major assassination".
U.S. intelligence officials say a high-profile political assassination, triggered by the public release of a new message from Osama bin Laden, will lead off the next major al Qaeda terrorist attack, The Washington Times has learned.
Now why would al Qaeda want anybody but Bush - could it be that his undiplomatic actions are working? DKK

A starving POW was eking out his April, 1945 day in a Japanese prison labor detail when one of the guards strutted over and informed his charges that FDR had died. "Your great leader dead. You now lose war," he smirked, rattling his saber.

The POW, who had never before done anything to provoke his captors slowly stood up and asked, "His vice president is Harry Truman, isn't he?" The POW continued: "He has Chicago gangland connections. Have you ever heard of Tom Pendergast's outfit?" The guard looked worried. The POW queitly said "You're in trouble. He's going to mess you up." The guard was visibly frightened. He had begun to understand that democracies are not propelled by one single leader; their will to exact justice would carry down to the last survivor.

Four months later, two nuclear weapons were deployed against the Japanese people, who had been given repeated opportunities to surrender and refused.
