The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

With the nation on high alert for al-Qaida terrorists, the Department of Homeland Security is putting its border officers through "etiquette" classes to soften their image and make them less threatening to arriving foreign immigrants, WorldNetDaily has learned.

O-M-G. When I did my story on hurricanes for ASG back in 1993 I used a pic from NOAA they called "The Parade of Storms" when there were like FIVE hurricanes or TS systems rolling around the Atlantic. Not one of them hit the USA. Judging from the last 36 hours, I'd say were not going to be that lucky this time.

TEHRAN: OPEC can do nothing to douse scorching oil prices when markets are already oversupplied by 2.8 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude, Iran’s OPEC governor said on Saturday.

Oil prices have raced to 21-year highs on the back of buoyant industrial demand in China, fears about Shi’ite Muslim insurrection in Iraq and US refinery bottlenecks. “Now there are more than 2.8 million bpd of crude more than demand,” Hossein Kazempour Ardebili was quoted as saying on the Iranian Oil Ministry Web site.

“There is no reason for OPEC members to increase production,” he added. “This organisation is unable to do anything at present.” Iran is the cartel’s second-biggest producer with an output capacity of around 4.2 million bpd. Analysts says Iran is pumping close to capacity and does not enjoy Saudi Arabia’s ability to open the taps in a bid to cool prices.

“It seems that prices will continue to go up without taking into consideration the basic elements of the market, supply and demand,” he said.

“The current trend of prices stems from political and military developments. NYMEX September crude futures closed at a scorching $46.58 on Friday, after touching yet another record high of $46.65. But Kazempour reiterated that oil prices could still crash if security returned to the oversupplied market. “If a calm political and military situation prevails in the market, the amount added to crude reserves will pressure the price,” he continued. Yet the fighting in Iraq has intensified over the past week and a total of about 90 insurgents had been killed in the northern town of Samarra and the southern city of Hilla on Friday and Saturday. reuters

There have been several instances of such things occurring, I remember seeing 4 or 5 at once in the Atlantic (usually in September). So far, 4 of 5 named storms have become Hurricanes (TS Earl will make it a clean sweep). This level of activity is quite unusual for this time of year. It's not quite the "Cape Verde" season (when they march from Africa to the US) yet, but those storms over Africa all mean business. If they can stay south of the major easterly steering currents they all have a shot at making it across.

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2004-08/15/content_1788232.htm
PARIS, Aug. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Lourdes, nestled in the Pyrenees Mountains region near the border with Spain and described by Pope John Paul II as "temple of human suffering", welcomed the Pope on Saturday for a two-day pilgrimage to honor the Virgin Mary and preach for world peace.

French President Jacques Chirac, French Catholic leaders and local dignitaries greeted the 84-year-old Pope at his arrival, French television TF1 reported.

Chirac said in a speech that France will join Vatican in the defense of values of peace, freedom and solidarity.

John Paul II, suffered from Parkinson's disease, finished his speech despite elocution difficulties and hailed the 60th anniversary ceremonies on Aug. 15 for the allies landings in Provens in Southeastern France.

He also paid homage to the great culture and belief patrimony that marked history of France.

He will go to in the evening the grotto where Saint Bernadette Soubirous said she saw visions of Mary in 1858.

Lourdes is the most popular Catholic pilgrimage site in Europe.About 6 million believers visit Lourdes annually to take holy water and pray for miracles. Enditem

Thanks - I'm the conservative version of Cindy (she is fearless I tell you!) She goes where I believe no one but the extremely brave would venture! My computer shivers just thinking about those places.

JP - I'll be reading your links all night - thanks for putting them together for us. The Paul Allen plane accident was interesting - he of extreme wealth with so many financial irons in the fire. Here's news from the Russian front:

Opinion in Russian news - Putin would prefer Bush in power

I thought our US pharmaceutical companies were charging an arm and a leg so that they could make just this kind of discovery. They must have been too busy raising prices here in the USA, preparing physician sample baskets or filming those commercials where we're supposed to ask our physicians for their products.(sarcasm)

Persian Journal Iran News
Iran Air plane emergency landings in Athens, Rome

Aug 13, 2004, 07:58

An Iranian Airbus 310 from the national flag carrier Iran Air had to make two separate emergency landings in Athens and Rome late Thursday for what has been reported as engine failure. Athens airport officials told IRNA that the Iran Air plane had delivered passengers at the airport at 13:55 local time, and had accordingly taken off for Madrid.

However, they said, the plane had to land again 10 minutes later after developing a failure in one of its engines.
Furthermore, Chief of Iran Air office in Madrid Ali-Akbar Amiri said although the failure had been removed in Athens, the plane had tomake a second emergency landing in Rome after the pilot noticed an engine malfunction.

Amiri said this happened two hours after the plane -- which had 102 passengers and 17 crew aboard -- took off from Athens Airport. He added that all the passengers and the crew of the plane are nharmed, and have been transferred to a hotel in Rome until the failure is removed.

In my paranoid mind, I can envision this malfunctioning Iranian plane having a malfunction that steers it into the Olympic stadium or the Vatican. Nah, never mind on that one. It could never happen.

U.S. pressing Russia over oil

By Peter Baker

Washington Post

MOSCOW - Alarmed by record-high election-year oil prices, President Bush in recent days has sent repeated appeals through intermediaries to the man he calls ``my good friend,'' President Vladimir Putin, asking him to calm the politically charged crisis surrounding Russia's giant Yukos Oil in the interest of settling down world energy markets.

Pakistani immigrant deported
By Our Correspondent

NEW YORK, Aug 14: Despite pleas from the community and US legislators the US immigration authorities have deported a Pakistani immigrant who was detained after snapping photos of a reservoir in upstate New York, after the 2001 terror attacks.

Ansar Mahmood, 27, a former pizza deliveryman, called a community activist and his supporter on Thursday night saying that he was at JFK airport in New York City and getting ready to board a plane for Pakistan.

Mr Mahmood's case was unique since no terror-related charges were filed against him, investigators discovered that he co- signed an apartment lease and registered a car for a Pakistani couple with expired visas.

Mr Mahmood was convicted in January 2002 of harbouring illegal immigrants and later ordered sent back to Pakistan. He was released from the Buffalo Federal Detention Center on Thursday.

US Senator Charles Schumer had appealed to the US immigration authorities to give Mr Mahmood a break following interventions from the Hudson County community members.
