The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

With the nation on high alert for al-Qaida terrorists, the Department of Homeland Security is putting its border officers through "etiquette" classes to soften their image and make them less threatening to arriving foreign immigrants, WorldNetDaily has learned.

Osama prefers donkeys to mobiles

AP[ THURSDAY, AUGUST 12, 2004 09:40:30 PM ]

ISLAMABAD: If Osama bin Laden is directing plans for an attack on the United States — as Washington intelligence officials suspect — his instructions are likely coming out of the craggy mountains between Afghanistan and Pakistan on the back of a donkey or under the shawl of a villager.

After the arrests of several top lieutenants, bin Laden and his right hand man, Egyptian Ayman al-Zawahri, have learned their lessons well, Pakistani intelligence officials and international terrorism experts say. They don't use satellite or cellular phones, don't trust anyone outside their innermost circle and never come up for air.

Messages from the men likely pass through the hands of many couriers, most of whom have no idea where they originated, before they are turned into e-mails or conveyed by phone calls to other militants.

"If bin Laden wants to convey something, he gives a letter to someone in his circle, who takes it a certain distance and then hands it to someone else, and then someone else until it reaches its final destination.

“Nobody knows who the letter is from except the first person who is one of bin Laden's most trusted men," said a senior Pakistani intelligence official who has been in on his nation's most sensitive counterterror operations.

The US government believes plans for a terror attack are being directed at the most senior levels of the al-Qaida leadership, including bin Laden, a US intelligence official said in July.

How much input the top men have is open to question, but a Pakistani government official said that several captured al-Qaida men have told authorities they received instructions from bin Laden.

"Probably he is alive, and some al-Qaida suspects captured in Pakistan have talked about receiving verbal messages from him through different channels," he said of bin Laden.

The American and Pakistani officials spoke on condition of anonymity. There has been no firm intelligence on bin Laden and al-Zawahri's whereabouts since they slipped away during a US Afghan assault on their mountain hideouts in Tora Bora in late 2001, but they are believed to be hiding in the mountainous no man's land between Pakistan and Afghanistan, protected by deeply conservative tribesmen who share their beliefs.

With the exception of about a half-dozen audio taped messages that the CIA has authenticated as being his voice, there has been virtually no sign of bin Laden since shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

That silence has lent him almost a mythic quality, especially among his followers, but officials say he is still very real, and very dangerous.

The Pakistani intelligence official said one of the best leads came with the arrest of al-Qaida's No. 3 man, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, who had a letter on him that he told interrogators he got directly from bin Laden, and which experts authenticated as being in bin Laden's handwriting.

The letter was apparently personal and destined for several of bin Laden's relatives in Iran, the official said.

Italy goes on high alert after threats

ROME, Aug 10: Security in Italy's art cities, including Venice, Florence and Rome, will be tightened over the coming holiday weekend after a stream of threats from militants, officials said on Tuesday.

The Italian interior ministry sent a letter to security chiefs around the country on Monday urging them to be on maximum alert for the Assumption holiday on Sunday - the deadline set by militants for Italy to pull its forces out of Iraq or face attacks.

"This particular historic moment has imposed the need for preventive measures even in Florence, a city of art," the police headquarters in the Tuscan capital said in a statement.

"We have decided to intensify security at the main monuments and the most-frequented piazzas," it said - steps that are being matched in historic cities across Italy. A militant group claiming links to Al Qaeda sent a statement to a London-based newspaper on August 1 giving Italy 15 days to withdraw its 2,700 troops from Iraq - the third-largest foreign force there.

"Our cells in Rome and in all other Italian cities are prepared and ready to carry out their mission after the end of the truce on the 15th of this month," the group Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades said in a later statement.

"You won't feel safe in your homes." On Tuesday, the same group claimed responsibility for bomb attacks that rocked two hotels and a gas depot in Istanbul and reiterated its threats against Italy.

"Those living in Europe, in Istanbul and Rome, and other countries which follow the despicable American policies, we will not let them be at peace as long as the people of Iraq and Palestine do not enjoy safety," it said in a statement.

An unknown Kurdish group said it carried out the Istanbul bomb attacks in retaliation for recent Turkish army operations against Kurdish guerrillas in eastern Turkey.

PROTECTING SENSITIVE SITES: The interior ministry has called the string of threats against Italy a "vast media campaign" by the militants but said it was maintaining the high security alertfirst set on July 21 and has called for extra measures this weekend.

The ministry has singled out more than 13,000 sensitive sites since 9/11 on the United States and deployed some 4,000 soldiers to help protect them. Efforts were stepped up after the March 11 train attacks in Madrid.

Instead of taking a break as millions of Italians do every year for the cherished mid-August holiday, police, troops and intelligence agents will step up their activities on Saturday and Sunday.

Security precautions have already been taken at the Vatican city state in the heart of Rome, where 24-hour metal detectors and a heavy police presence have created long queues at St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums.

Pope John Paul himself will be in France for the holiday, visiting the pilgrimage shrine of Lourdes. Tourist hot spots such as St. Mark's Square in Venice and Rome's Colosseum will be under close surveillance, along with strategic sites like airports, railway stations and power plants.

Security experts say Italian interests abroad, especially those in Iraq, could be more vulnerable targets. "Foreign sites are more approachable. Some lost embassy somewhere or a cruise ship could be easier to attack," said Alessandro Politi, an independent Italian defence analyst.

Nineteen Italians were killed in Iraq last year when a suicide bomber attacked a paramilitary police base in the southern city of Nassiriya.

Things are crazy here - everything's flying off the store shelves. Gas stations are running out of gas. ATMs are going empty.

Still, this is NOTHING compared to Hurricane Andrew. I lived between West Palm and Ft. Lauderdale back then, and it was total chaos.

Stay safe JJ, the storm looks like it's getting even better organized now (probably verging on Cat 3 based on satellite imagery).

I loved that pistol.

They retired those about 5 years after I entered law enforcement, and replaced it with the Ruger P-85 auto's in the early 90's. Both were good firearms, but the Ruger was like hauling a boat anchor around on your hip for hours at a time.

I know cops today who never carried a wheelgun or used speedloaders...poor guys and girls dont know what they missed.

A remake of the old Model 29 Smith. I qualified with those in the police academy!

I competed in a centerfire tournament with a Model 629, 4" barrel using PMC 240 gr JHP 44 mag factory ammo. The first target was 25 yards, slow fire, SINGLE HANDED. Ouch. A sickening 25 points. The 2nd target was the same distance, but two-handed. 77 points. The rest of the firing line was jumpy for the remainder of the tournament. Waiting for the big .44 mag to go boom.

My wife doesn't like the big N frame S&W's. Too big for her hand. The 629 nicks skin off the lower joint of her thumb on every shot. I moved her to L frames. She's quite a marksman with a 4" 686+ with 148 gr DEWC ammo (38SPL).

A swig of Guinness to chase the Geritol. Then decide which one tasted better :-)

Excellent article; thanks for sharing, Cindy. I am singing "Two Men and a Fax Machine" to the tune of Sinatra's "Three Coins in the Fountain!" BTW, on the Haganah link, I cannot get to the MEMRI link. I think it is hanging because of my ad blocker.
