From Observation to Comment to Action...Time For All to Ante Up
8-9-04 | Bob J

I've been told, and have a tendency to agree, that there are three kinds of people in the world. Those that make things happen, those that watch things happen and those that wonder what happened.

The evolution of the conservative movement over the last decade (thank you Bill and Hill) has seen an unprecedented growth in conservative activism. Where once the libs ruled the streets, today they look not only for a counter presence but conservatives going on the offensive with our own rallies, email campaigns and positive action...where the rubber meets the asphalt.

Conservatives are not naturally provocative. For the most part, we want to be left alone and rely on the goodwill of politicians and others to make things happen. However, that game plan is no longer operative. The gauntlet has been thrown down and soon there will be an all out war between the forces of good and the forces of evil for ascendancy in the hearts and minds of all Americans.

Where will you stand in that war?

Will you be content to frequent bulletin boards, like Free Republic, speaking your mind to the choir and then go to bed thinking you have made a difference? Or are you willing to pick up the standard of your convictions and proudly carry it into battle?

There are hundreds, maybe thousands of dedicated FReeper activists that for years have been working their hearts out in the real world so you and your children can live in a country, and world, that cherishes the principles on which your country was founded. The problem is, it isn't enough. If we are going to win this ultimate conflagration's with liberalism and capture the soul of this country we need every able bodied person to stand to arms and dedicate themselves not just in word, but in deed, to the very ideals they talk about.

When the enemy is engaged, when your compatriots need you the most, will you be posting anonymous, pithy phrases, or, will you be there with them leading or following, and helping to make a real difference where it counts.

We could use a few more good men and women, issuing commands or passing out ammo.

For anyone in Washington State:

http://www.spokanegop.org/bushvolunteer.html

Sign up even if you can give only an hour for the whole campaign to do phone calls, or ring doorbells, or help with get-out-the-vote.

Surely, between now and November, everyone can find an hour in their schedule.

Why yes, now that you mention it...

And folks, allow me to suggest that you call your county GOP if you haven't already, and that you brainstorm about getting more swiftboat/wintersoldier stuff in front of you local vets and getting them mobilized.

At least once a month or even once a quarter, each of us should attend some government meeting or policy making committee (such as your city council, State Legislative Committee meetings, the State annual meeting for your professional group: i.e., the Texas Medical Association Council meetings if you're a member or the Texas chapter of the teacher's union, etc.) After all, our taxes or dues money pays for these meetings and the Councils, Legislators and other officials purport to speak for us.

I spent the afternoon in Austin, at meetings which included the House State Affairs Committee hearing on the methods used - or ideas for some method to be put in place - to track the statistics on the Parental Notification law for minors who have abortions. Specifically, we heard and testified about the judicial bypass for those girls who do not want to even notify a parent.

The State of Texas does not require a parent's permission for an abortion for girls from 14 through 17, only notification. For some reason, all Texas parents' Constitutional rights are trumped by the State in the name of "privacy" for girls. Evidently the requirements can be met by sending a certified letter to the address the girl gives the abortion facility.

But, some girls do not even want to do that - and, admittedly, there are a few who do not know where either of their parents are - and these girls petition a judge for a bypass. If the judge does not rule within 2 business days, the girl gets her bypass by default. All of the procedings are carried out with complete secrecy. In the interest of "confidentiality," even the girl herself cannot access the records, even after she's turned 18.

And no one has any idea how many times any of these procedures are used. ***No one knows****

The last few months I've seen an increasing trend for FReepers to start going for each others jugular. Sometimes we forget (I've certainly done it myself) that in the grand scheme of things, we are on the same team. We may disagree on priorities or how far we are willing to go, but we have enough enemy in the left without creating more amongst ourselves. We can disagree but be civil to each other. We can debate nuance, but not believe that our personal positions are more important than the health of the whole. Let's argue vigorously but remind ourselves the guy whose trachia we are ripping out today may be sitting next to us in a foxhole tommorrow.

I'm going to propose that we all make a new start. Let's put all past differences behind us and resolve to band together and fight the good fight, the elimination of liberalism as a significant culturual influence in America...and see that to its end in our lifetimes.

If you agree, please post your thoughts and ping your lists and your friends to this thread.

Well, we here at my end are doing our part. As are many other FReepers that I know.

Currently I am managing fellow FReeper Parodrig's campaign for congress and a few members of our NY chapter are pitching in to help.

I certainly don't post as much as I used to, time to get out into the streets. In our district we are finding that there are thousands if people of faith who are not participants in the political process and are not registered. They have never been given an alternative to vote for and are disillusioned. They are our potential secret weapon.

To paraphrase Stalin "It doesn't matter who answers polls. What matters is who shows up and votes."

By my count there are 84 days left until a very important election. Every freeper out there can take at least 1 day to contribute something outside of posting on this website.

We can not wake up on November 3, and have John Kerry president.

Bob J, yours is a good post and most of us could be doing more but please don't discount the value of this place. Information is being shared like never before. I recall a time here when the threads were fluff and the information slacked off. I don't know what happened to change the course but FreeRepublic has changed since those days. The flow of information these days , first of all, gets viewed by influential folks, shared daily in the workplace all over this country, passed onto family and friends so they in turn can pass on the information, it gets out on the streets, etc.
Personally, I use FR as a tool. A resource of information to gather and then inform the uninformed. It's where my ammo. is stashed. I could get it somewhere else but it more fun here.

If you read what is here then use it to inform others, you sir are carrying the standard into battle.

This was not meant as criticism to those that bring valuable information and analysis to this site, but rather a catalyst to urge others to take it to the next level of activism and committment.

Bob J, I'm no sir. ;) (and please don't call me ma'm~I'm not that old)

I'm glad you clarified what you meant. FR is an awesome place and though I may be one of those that makes pithy comments from time to time, I do make use of the information provided.
