CHICAGO (CBS 2) Alan Keyes is expected to formally enter the race for U.S. Senate this Sunday, but an exclusive CBS 2 poll shows most Illinoisans think it’s inappropriate for Keyes to run in Illinois. Many have an unfavorable view of the Maryland resident.
Our exclusive CBS 2/Newsradio 780 poll suggests that Keyes has a lot of hard work ahead in the senate contest.
Some Republican leaders are preparing to welcome Alan Keyes to Illinois this Sunday with a rally in northwest suburban Arlington Heights. Others are speaking out about the drawbacks of a candidate who's never lived in the Prairie State, no matter how good a debater he may be.
“Mr. Keyes, while he'll raise the level of debate, there's no doubt he'll be able to stand on the stage with Mr. Obama, it's not certain that he'll know where the stage is,” said Greg Baise, president of the Illinois Manufacturers Association.
It is not just Greg Baise and his powerful Illinois Manufacturers Association. When we asked 500 adults about a non-resident such as Keyes running to represent Illinois in the Senate, 25 percent said it was appropriate; 75 percent inappropriate.
Asked their view of Alan Keyes specifically, 18 percent said it was favorable; 33 percent said it was unfavorable; with 49 percent having no impression.
With Democratic Senate nominee Barack Obama still basking in the glow of the national attention he received at the Boston convention, 48 percent of Illinois adults said they had a favorable view of him, with 22 percent unfavorable and 29 percent reporting no impression either way.
Referring to our findings, a Keyes spokesman said, "It doesn't surprise us at all. Obama's been unopposed for six weeks now. Let's give (Keyes) a chance to talk to the voters of Illinois before taking another poll."
There are two other candidates also running for U.S. Senate in Illinois. Jerry Kohn is with the Libertarian Party. Albert Franzen is running as an independent candidate.

Does Illinois register voters by Party? If so what is the percentages for each, D, R, I, etc. If not do you know how the state has broken out percentage wise in statewide races such as Senator, Gov. by Party affiliation when voting. I'm assuming the democrats lead but don't know for sure.

Right on target and I think Alan will demolish Obama in their debates.
This is about putting someone on the ticket running to strengthen the rest of the ballot.
Also it will stop the dims from having a pass straight to the Senate. In other words spending money that could go elswhere.
The GOP knows the battle is lost but not to show up would be perceived as weakness and that dirty tricks pay off.
Alan Keyes would demolish most everyone in a debate. If I was Obama, which is ludicrous in itself is ludicrous, I would certainly be pooping my pants at the thought of going up against Keyes.
Sounds like the pollsters are a bunch of racists against Dr Keyes.
Good analysis. However, I think that Alan Keyes has more than a decent chance of winning, if he really campaigns hard for the seat, and if he gets an endorsement visit by President Bush.
Obama is also black... (Well, 1/2 black, though it makes no difference to me.)

I personally would have voted for him last election for President. I did vote for him in the primary.
This is also about putting a black man who is an outstanding conservative moral voice in front of millions of people during the debates to take the shine off the dims new star.
Dr. Keyes will make Obama wish he was back in Kenya herding goats with his father after the debates.
Not sure how the split is (anyone else?) Dems surely greatly outnumber registered Republicans. On primary day, a voters has do declare, or more precisely, choose a ballot. Dem or Republican, plus I guess Libertarian. You can decide that day (of the primary) what ballot you want. Voters cannot declare themselves "independent" and expect a ballot. Again, that's for primaries.
We don't have election day registration.
I'd be shocked if there were more than 50,000 Republican-registered voters in Chicago. There are a few Republican-leaning areas (Far Northwest-side, Lincoln Park), but when I lived in the city I was a registered Democrat. You never know when you need a "favor."
Just because of the Chicago situation, Dems, IMO, lead GOP registered voters 60-40 at least! Probably more.
No "Right-to-Life" candidate?
On second thought Keyes is "right-to-life."
